Fight Night Champion answers the bell

EA boxing sim series returns to the ring next year for Xbox 360 and PS3 with a "grittier" take on the sport; EA Canada studio handling development.

While EA Sports' Fight Night series of games has traditionally touted itself as a straight-faced simulation of a strategic sport, the next installment will apparently showcase the sour side of the sweet science. At its Studio Showcase today, EA announced Fight Night Champion for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and gave an indication that the series is heading in a new direction.

Pacquiao has seen better days, considering he likely can't see much with that eye swollen shut.

While the sport of boxing is inherently rough, EA Sports' Andrew Wilson promised a "grittier" and "darker" game with animations and player damage that "truly conveys the brutality of the sport of boxing." The publisher released a screenshot in support of those comments, depicting a bloodied and battered Manny Pacquiao.

As far as gameplay goes, EA is promising a refined physics-based animation system and a new "Full Spectrum Punch Control" scheme. The publisher didn't mention the game's Online Pass-limited multiplayer features, instead focusing on a single-player mode intended to re-create the dramatic and emotional aspects of the sport.

Fight Night Champion is being developed at EA Canada by the team that put together last year's Fight Night Round 4. It is set for release sometime next year. For more on its predecessor, check out GameSpot's review of Fight Night Round 4.

While FN might have its flaws its still the best boxing game out there. There really are not many but other attempts are just embarassing. I am looking forward to this but I still miss the sound efffects from FNR3.

This series is getting tired. Im a huge boxing fan, I love the sport I think that its the most exciting sport in the world. The problem with the FN series is that its just not realistic enough. There is just too many hits an' misses. I would like to recite a list of the things that I think should be included in the game, but that list would be massive! As a fan this sport I love is not properly represented, and it would be good to see some realism injected in the series for once. Ive seen the other sports titles that EA have released and it makes me totally jealous. They just cant get boxing right. And guess what? Ill still buy it. Hoping beyond hope they get it right at last. LETS GET READY TO RUMMMBLE!

I loved Fight Night Round 4 ... In my opinion it was probably the most realist boxing sim out there... The Only flaw was it had a couple problems.....Heres a list of them! - Training Too Hard - Not Much To Do Other Than Career & Play Now - Legacy Mode Lacks - Few Glitches Here & There - In Legacy Mode It Was Less Fun That You Could Not Win Money For Winning Fights - Some Shortcomings Other Than That ... Gameplay Wise = Great Game!

@ebookerd1 never thought I'd hear anyone say something like that lol As for fight night round 4, it was good aside from the fact that the training minigames in career mode were way too hard. They were so hard I simulated training most of the time and by the time I got high in rank everyone else's stats were way higher than mine. Believe me, it made me a whole lot better than the average, but those training games were just too hard.

Re: mrsniperr83 "I hope they make it a little more faster, FNR4 was too slow for me" Are you kidding me? FNR4 took it way beyond what is realistic in the sport of boxing.. IMO, FNR3 had the speed and pacing of the fights dead on.. I was disappointed at the brawl type of gameplay of FNR4.. Unless you mean the career mode was slow.. In which case, I agree.. Tedious training games which weren't very enjoyable..

I've already destroyed Fight Night Rd 4. Hadn't played it much online though. Hopefully this game will even be better. FN4 was just to easy. The training games were tough though. Took a lot of practice to master some of those and was hard trying to max out your stats. I had downloaded a Chuck Norris boxer and he was one of the toughest fighters. lol!! He put be down in the 3rd round, but I got back up, knocked his down in the 7th and won on the cards. The countering was excellent in this game, even though the computer seemed to counter almost everything you threw at them. I would counter moves and it wouldn't register half the times. The CPU was terrible at handling haymakers. Still a great game. I need to finish my career and retire after going 62-0.

Why show Pacquiao beaten up like that? All he does is beat up, NOT get beat up.

Yeah, I liked the format of FNR 3 as opposed to FNR 4, not that I thought it was bad....it just wasn't 3. Hopefully, it'll get back to that level.

i hope this new boxing game is better than FNR4. HATED that game. Rented it and just couldn't stand the controls and changes they made. Round3 is a great game, they need to go back towards that game (but they probably wont).

last time i played fight night 4 online i was playing one of the champs...I'm sure he cheated and switched my whole button layout. I was really thrown off gaurd and got my first loss that way. I really hope they fix this.

FNR4 was solid BUT I wasn't a fan of how the focus on counter punching pumped the brakes on the speed of the game.. FNR3 was awesome for slugging it out

FNR4 was almost perfect, they just need to get rid of that awful mini game rpg like grind-a-thon that was attached to the legacy mode.

I love the fight night series, but lets admit it.... EA isn't really known for upgrading their sequels. (I.E. the Fifa series) but i really hope they will with this though, but i am skeptic...

I have always liked this series and I would suggest these career mode improvements: Customisable ring entrances - they had these in FN1 and then just didn't really bother. Different trainers/gym - every time I start a new career it feels the same. Big fights - title fights need more hype/importance as too much is left to the players imagination. Revised stat building - if you are good at the game the stats should start to show this...not just through training.

If this next one doesn't have a better create-a-boxer and tattoos, I'm gonna' knock someone at EA out.

Thank Goodness that EA has confirmed a new Fight Night for next year. Every customer at my job has been asking if a new Fight Night is coming back out.

V4LENT1NE

I thought the last FN was terrible, was slow as hell and to much focus on counter punching. I hope they make it a proper slugfest like it used to be but still making good use of speed and jabs, not the slow paced, counter crap from last time. And for the love of God give us a 3D crowd, tired of fighting in front of 2D cut outs of the typical rich sob's that get in the front row.

Despite numerous complaints I was very comfortable with the new punch control system. I beat the career mode on G.O.A.T.

Can't wait for this! You know I play FNR4 so much that I wore out the rubberized coating on my controllers!

Awesome. I've been playing FNR4 virtually non stop in the year it's been out, and I'll most likely be playing it all the way until FNR5 releases. Can't wait

So its just gonna to look more brutal but thats it? Id like to perform punches in an easier way, I try for a hook and I get an uppercut. Bigger Roster would be a plus, Not much picks for FNR4 unless you get the DLC that adds like 3-4 fighters. Also I want them to remove fighters who appear twice (in an alternate division). Also making Online less laggy would be a great plus, FN is very fun online.

I wonder if they can finally sign Money Mayweather to be in the game. Pac-Mayweather cover would be insane.

Finally got on the UFC bus eh EA? They've been doing this damage modeling for a couple years now. Better late than never I guess. I'm looking forward to buying MMA when it's price is slashed because it falls short when compared to UFC 2010.

This sounds fantastic, Round 3 was amazing, Round 4 somehow took it a step further and now Champion looks to finally put the cherry on the top, can't wait.
