FIFA 14 will not include female players

EA Sports' upcoming FIFA 14 will not include female football players.

Female football players will not be making an appearance in EA Sports' upcoming FIFA 14.

Speaking to Kotaku, EA Canada executive producer David Rutter said, “As a team, we have discussed at length the inclusion of female characters in FIFA, and whilst it's something that remains on our list of features for consideration as part of our mission statement above, we do not have plans to put female characters into the game this year."

Female players will not be included in FIFA 14.

The comment follows on from a God is a Geek interview with FIFA producer Sebastian Enrique, who said “there are no plans at the moment” to include female players. Enrique went on to explain that including women would require a new physics model, player modelling, and hairstyles.

EA Sports' NHL 13 was the first professional league simulation sports game to introduce female playable characters. Former Team USA defensive player Angela Ruggiero and Team Canada forward Hayley Wickenheiser are playable characters in the hockey simulation game.

FIFA 14 was announced for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC earlier this year.

Female players would like to make a female custom player that looks like themselves.  Or maybe even include a female league?!?

EA's response is "We NEVER update anything and you still buy the game every year.  Why would we change that model for chicks?"

i can creat a woman virtual pro player.

Well I get to skip FIFA again.  Maybe next year they'll want to expand their audience.  So much for new console (XBox One), new players.

Are there actually female futbol players on ANY of the national teams? If so, who are they?

So their argument against including them is 'ugh, more work, forget it.'

I admit this is an ignorant question, but does anyone who follows football / soccer know if there are female players on any of the pro teams?  The NHL example has some actual female players on the NHL teams.  Similarly for PGA golf as there are a few women on the tour.  Is the same true for FIFA?  If so that would explain the impetus for them to try to implement it...

Basically, it would require more work than a roster update. That's not really what EA Sports is about. So, no.

At first I thought this was about Madden, and I was really confused until I read the article title again, but I still don't get why anyone would care if there was women players or not. You're still playing the same sport.

When did somebody say they were goig to be females??

Adding female players would require new hairstyles?  But what else do you do between iterations of the game?

I guess female teams can boost sales. If the models looked realistic enough and you could make them run around topless.

women play footbal?

Eh the US women's team is more fun to watch than the men's team.  Probably because they win a lot more and seem a lot more passionate about the game.  Would be cool to have them in there, but it feels like it should be a separate game entirely.  How would you do the player ratings?

I don't care as I don't follow womens football.

Kinda making news out of nothing. Like saying there will be no Nascar racing in the next Fifa...

I personally don't mind whether they do this or not. I'm not a fan of women's football on a football point of view, but I don't see the problem with them releasing a separate game which features women's football only. There's no real need to integrate it all into one game, I would much rather that they continue to improve the game itself than adding in a game mode I, and many other players are not going to use.

I am not concerned that much about the inclusion of female characters. What gets me the most is his sorry excuse for not including them. You mean making changes to player models, hairstyles and updated physics is so difficult that you can't implement it into the "new game" you supposedly put out every year?

Are there enough girls who actually play these games to warrent putting in female teams? Its like 2k putting in WNBA teams into a NBA game no one will play the WNBA teams and even then the WNBA teams will have a huge disadvantage when playing the nba teams.

"including women would require a new physics model, player modelling, and hairstyles" - it's shocking, isn't it ?
They'd have to actually put some effort into the next clone instead of just incrementing the version number, updating the league and player tables and charging full price again, year after year.

Did fifa ever include female players ?

Also, why so many people buy fifa games ? Every year they release the same thing with some minor difference. It is like paying for service pack update for your windows. It not even like call of duty because you get new campaign with new story, but with fifa there is barely anything new.

... And why is this news? This is every year so.

Let's be honest, competitive team-Sports is a male dominated thing, because males are inherently stronger by a large comparison.

In other words, no one actualyl wants to play female footballers but actual females. Hell, I doubt even that. You want to play with the guys you know from your favourite team.

did all my comments get deleted?! Why?! @poormallard

Here's some trivia for all of you; that german female footballer, Birgit Prinz, was once approached by AC Perugia and given an offer to play for the male football team. I think she turned the offer down because she didn't think she could fit into the more physiq'ier form of male football. True story.

wow that would be awesome

seriously, if they do it right ( not just copy-paste) it will be like playing a different game

dribblesbarbax

What a lazy excuse to not include female characters. Physics model will remain the same. As far as I know women obey the same laws of physics as men. As far as the hairstyles go, half of the male players hairstyles can be used as female hairstyles anyway.

@kingtrax  I am male, so it's not about creating players that look like ourselves, that makes the women teams enticing.  For me it's about playing as an American team that can win a game.  And no, I will not and have bought FIFA until they add the women's teams.

hund2110

@jimrhurst Are you asking if there are female players on male teams? Or are you asking if professional clubs have female teams?

@GOGOHeadray  No one plays the Atlanta Hawks anymore so why do they continue to put them into the game?

@GOGOHeadray gaming is in his mayority destined for males, got to say that is  really likeable when a girl can talk about games

@rabih55555 because EA shuts down servers of previous versions every 2 year? so at least every 2 years you are gotta buy a new version

@_Judas_ Hannah Ljungberg was offered a contract too, but Perugia were just trying to be sensational at the time so they rejected them on the grounds of it being a stupid publicity stunt - they even had one of Colonel Gadaffi's sons playing for them.

Apastron

@verybadperson That's the thing with women's football, it's a different game to the men's so comparing the two is pointless.

ominous_prime

@dribblesbarbax Whenever you are creating an object to be used in a game, and let's face it women are not built like a man, you have to create rules on how "collisions" are detected for that object. The rules already exist for the male objects as they are universally used in the game. When you add in a different object, a female, you have new animations to create, rules on what happens when a man object "collides" with a female object, rules on what happens when a female object "collides" with the ball, etc. There's a lot of work that goes in to creating additional assets. It's not as simple as putting a woman's face on a man's body. People would then complain that was handled poorly. I would welcome having women in FIFA, but don't call it being lazy.

dribblesbarbax
dribblesbarbax

@ominous_primeIf a single individual from a modding community can add realistic female player models to a football game and a big developer with hundreds of employees and resources cant do it, then yes it is very lazy.

dribblesbarbax
dribblesbarbax

@ominous_primeOh I care not for the game. I was just pointing out the lazy development of these games that get pushed out year over year. Also XXI_World has a point. Not many people care for womens football. Its growing but its not there yet for games to profit from. EA's excuse to say that it would be too much effort technically was a piss poor way of avoiding any possible sexist answers.

ominous_prime
ominous_prime

@dribblesbarbax @ominous_prime If that were the case, then you have nothing to worry about because you can add the mod, eh? Good luck on that individual getting the mod to look and perform at the same quality as the rest of the game.

XXI_World
XXI_World

@dribblesbarbax @ominous_prime EA will have to pay extra money for programmers to add in extra animations and scripts. There's also the issue of licensing, which also costs money.

And there's no guarantee that adding female teams will help the sales much. Let's be honest, hardly anyone cares about female football teams (I don't know about Americans, but in Europe and Asia, no one gives a shit; neither broadcasters nor football fans).
