FIFA 13 sales hit 14.5 million, SimCity up to 1.6 million

EA reveals new sales milestones for tentpole franchises as part of full-year earnings report that saw $3.79 billion in revenue and $98 million profit.

As part of its latest financial report today, Electronic Arts announced that FIFA 13 has sold over 14.5 million units, up 30 percent over FIFA 12. In addition, SimCity sales have climbed to 1.6 million copies worldwide, 50 percent of which came through digital sales.

Other highlights in the report included Battlefield 3 Premium generating over $120 million in revenue from more than 3.5 million subscriptions to date. FIFA 13 sales are up 30 percent year-over-year and digital revenue for the game hit $200 million, up 94 percent from last year. With FIFA Online and FIFA World Class Soccer sales factored in, total FIFA digital net revenue was $350 for fiscal 2013.

The Simpsons: Tapped out was a top iOS game for EA, generating close to $10 million in digital net revenue in March alone and almost $50 million since it launched in August. The company's new driving game Real Racing 3 was downloaded over 30 million times and has 2.5 million daily active users since its launch in March, EA said.

EA's Origin platform now has over 47 million registered users (up from 39 million at the end of December), including 20 million mobile users. And for the trailing twelve-month period, company-wide digital revenue jumped 36 percent to an all-time high of $1.7 billion.

"As we enter a new fiscal year, EA is well-positioned for dynamic growth on next generation consoles, PCs, and mobile platforms," said executive chairman and interim EA CEO Larry Probst. "With world-class games, a rapidly growing digital business, and top-notch creative talent, we are excited about EA's strategy for FY 2014 and beyond."

"EA has a solid operating plan with disciplined R&D spending and a sharp focus on delivering the best games and services," chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen added. "We are holding our FY 2014 operating expenses flat to the prior year--a significant achievement in a console transition year."

EA Labels president reiterated that the company is currently creating "a number" of new games based on the Star Wars franchise for consoles, PCs, tablets, and mobile, though none were specified.

Overall, for EA's fourth quarter ended March 31, the company posted revenue of $1.2 billion and a profit of $323 million. For the full year period also ended March 31, EA posted a profit of $98 million on $3.79 billion. The publisher will hold a post-earnings financial call this afternoon. Check back for highlights from the call.

They're lying about the SimCity sales numbers just like they lied about the reasons to connect to a server to play the game.

Came in expecting whiney comments about Sim City... confirmed.

1.6 million people, many of them currently enjoying the game.

200 Gamespot members who haven't played the game, whining about server issues that were resolved a month ago, wasting their lives.

Who is the chump?

Anyone who bought Sim City after knowing how badly it launched should have their computers thrown against their face.  stop supporting bad developer practices, maybe we'll get respect as consumers and decent games in return.

SimCity sold 1.1 million the 1st 2 weeks and only 500k since?   SimCity 3000 sold over 5 million copies.  The latest steaming pile wont come anywhere near that.

14.5 million sales is a lot for an entry of a franchise that releases yearly. Congratulation. I hope people aren't upset over EA's achievement. It's not like those people who only play FIFA will spend the money on other games if they hadn't bought 13. This just shows that there's a demand in the football genre. If other publishers want a share of the pie, go ahead and make the best football game yet.

47 million, eh? With that many, one more (i.e. me) doesn't make that much difference and Origin doesn't have anything to offer to make me feel different about it. There will be no new Star Wars games until Spring 2014 at the earliest and while I hope they won't require Origin, I might install it if they seem good enough...after I've gone through my 6-year-long backlog, so no money from me in long while.

with numbers like these, anyone who expects EA to sharpen up in the near future has the reality filter on their eyes turned off.

You put out a product that people want, then they are going to buy it. It's pretty simple business. The numbers don't surprise me, I find it funny that people are all up in arms about this. I can understand those that play Football(Soccer) that thinks there is a better product out there being upset. But people that wouldn't ever play a game like this to complain is weird.

That's like an RPG guy who only plays RPGS, speaking about how a company sucks for releasing all these fighting games. They aren't for you get over it.

I wish someone would play a video of EA in a closed meeting talking about how dumb their customers are. All they do is market, buy out licenses and put out the same game year in and year out and it sells.

@malokevi You dare to say a spesific number of 200 Gamespot members who haven't played the game, whining about server issues that were resolved a month ago, wasting their lives. Yet only saying "many of them" still enjoying SimCity. Now... Mister Malokevi, HOW MANY of them exactly? ; )

Because 1.6 million is only the number of sales. If only less than half of it still actually enjoying the game then I can say it's a big damn fail.

And don't forget how Square Enix called Tomb Raider which sold more than 3.5 mil copies "underperformed". If such game is called underperfomed, then what would they call a game which only sells 1.6 mil copies and left only less than half of them enjoying the game?

@hoplayletsplay I personally find PES to be several times better than FIFA. However, there's one small thing holding other publishers back, and it affects PES as well. EA holds the exclusive license to FIFA, much like they own the exclusive licenses to PGA, NFL, NCAA Football (not for long), Arena Football (just to shun 2K Sports), and now UFC, and in the past NASCAR (now to Activision).

So yes, with their money, they own sports franchises, so congrats to them.

@ethanm1834 My mother used to say "Don't speak badly about food you don't need to eat", but apparently not many people have learned that. I can't believe how popular FIFA games are, but that's because I search for something else in games. I don't want to play something I can do IRL, especially something as simple as football/soccer. Racing games are only slightly better in that way, because you can get real hurt or even die if you try to do some things that you can do in racing games (I'm talking about realistic racing games) and far from everyone can afford to drive those cars. Then again, a lot of people who are not me likes stuff that I don't like and there's nothing odd with that.

@o016945 @hoplayletsplay The gameplay on Fifa is infinitely better. PES until 2011 could not move players 360 degrees. The animation and gameplay mechanic is still dated to compete with Fifa 13.

o016945
o016945

@Richmaester6907 @o016945 @hoplayletsplay I don't care about the teams themselves...fake players are fine for me. I know EA always has great options outside of standard gameplay, and it is what they excel at. However, I still find NHL and FIFA highly overrated as their are always exploitive holes in the gameplay.

o016945
o016945

@R2C25 @o016945 @hoplayletsplay That stuff doesn't matter so much to me. I still feel that PES provides a more realistic approach to the sport. PES 13 is a great game on its own. FIFA still feels that it lacks the realism of the sport, and the goalies on the game have always been terrible (haven't played since FIFA 11 though). Sorry I offend anyone in their love with the FIFA franchise.
