The beginning of the year typically isn't the most exciting time for gamers, but that doesn't mean the gaming well has run dry. To sway gamers toward their products, Warner Bros. Interactive and Sony have announced this week that free samples have been lined up as precursors to the full releases of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, Resistance: Retribution, and Killzone 2.

Warner Bros. F.E.A.R. 2 demo will begin permeating Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network beginning January 22, while PC gamers can pick up the sampler through the game's Web site. The demo will drop players into the reeling city of Auburn, which was leveled as part of the events of Monolith's first game. Gamers will be able to fight their way through a number of locales in the ruined city. Check out GameSpot's recent sit-down with art lead Dave Matthews and senior software engineer Matthew Titelbaum for more on F.E.A.R. 2.

By way of its PlayStation Blog, Sony reports that gamers will be able to check out an advanced trial of Resistance: Retribution for the PSP two months before its official ship date. The demo is available to those who preorder the third-person shooter through Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, or Game Crazy. The sampler, available February 2, features both single-player action and Resistance Connect, a mode which lets gamers sync up with Resistance 2 for the PlayStation 3.

Closing out the year, Sony revealed that those who preorder Killzone 2 through GameStop would receive access to the heavily anticipated shooter's demo beginning February 3. In an interview with MTV this week, the publisher said that gamers who do not choose to preorder the game will still be able to pick up the Killzone 2 demo, but they'll have to wait until February 26. Killzone 2 for the PS3 is expected launch a day later, on February 27.
