Fatal Frame III zooms in on retail

Latest in Tecmo's ghost-busting franchise now available for PlayStation 2; gamers shoot specters with magic camera.

The Japanese are well known for crafting some pretty creepy movies. The Ring and The Grudge are both remakes for North American audiences of the new wave of Japanese horror movies. Spooky, shaky, dark images aren't limited just to Japanese cinema, though. Case in point, the growing list of survival horror games from the country, such as the Resident Evil series, the Silent Hill line, and the Fatal Frame franchises.

American audiences just got one more helping of hair-raising today, as Tecmo announced that Fatal Frame III: The Tormented has shipped to stores for the PlayStation 2. This is the first full new Fatal Frame game since 2003's Crimson Butterfly, which was later ported to the Xbox in a director's cut version.

In The Tormented, gamers get caught up in Rei Kurosawa's nightmares, which have crossed over into her reality. The House of Sleep, a dreamlike world of ghosts and just plain scary stuff, is slowly taking over her life and manifests itself in the form of a tattoo on Rei that is constantly growing. With the help of her friends, she'll take on the evil spirits by shooting them...with a camera.

Fatal Frame III is rated M for Mature and retails for $49.99. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's hands-on with the imported version.
