Fast 5 and Fast & Furious 6director Justin Lin will direct and produce the upcoming Hot Wheels movie based on the famous Mattel toyline, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As the site explains, the Hot Wheels movie has been in the works for a long time now. In 2013, Simon Crane was attached to direct, but that never happened. The movie has switched hands, too, moving from Columbia to Warner Bros, and finally landing at Godzilla and Warcraft studio Legendary where it sits today.

Even though Lin has now come aboard to direct and produce the film, it's still somewhat early days, as Lin's next job is to find a writer for the movie. It is not expected to be Lin's next film.

The director is also working on Space Jam 2, starring LeBron James. Lin also directed this summer's sci-fi blockbuster, Star Trek: Beyond.

Mattel claims the Hot Wheels toy brand is the best-selling in the world; it says it's produced more than 5 billion cars since 1968.

The Hot Wheels movie isn't the first based on a Mattel toy franchise, as the film Max Steel based on the action figures, comes out in October. There are also Masters of the Universe and Barbie films in development.
