Fallout: New Vegas ships 5 million

Bethesda and Obsidian's post-nuclear RPG sequel hits milestone, generates "well over" $300 million in sales.

Though it was plagued by an array of bugs at launch, Fallout: New Vegas is now a bona fide hit. Today, the post-nuclear role-playing game's publisher, Bethesda Softworks, announced that the game has shipped 5 million units worldwide. The company did not offer exact sales figures, but it said that including a "heavy volume of digital downloads," the game has generated "well over $300 million in retail sales."

Bethesda is cashing in with Fallout: New Vegas.

Today's announcement comes almost in tandem with Bethesda's revelation that a "comprehensive" set of bug fixes will soon arrive for all versions of Fallout: New Vegas. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the game uses an updated version of the same engine as the award-winning Fallout 3, which was released in 2008. That, in turn, was a modified version of the engine from 2006's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Fallout: New Vegas is set in the Mojave wasteland and casts players in the role of a courier who is shot in the head and left for dead. After recovering, players roam the desert and the titular metropolis, exploring new areas and modifying weapons. They also get wrapped up in the larger conflict among the bureaucratic New California Republic, the slave-trading Caesar's Legion, and a mysterious New Vegas impresario named Mr. House.

And as for which one i'd prefer, Fallout NV or FO3.. Hmm.. Well i'd defiantly say FO3 has a stronger main story line and is fleshed out very well thru the ton of DLC available for it.. But NV emphasizes more on exploreation and feels WAY more like a real post apocalyptic SIM/Game.. More gritty and immersive just sorta lacking a main plot to follow; but all the great side quests make up for that. Play them both IMO.. But if you purchase Fallout 3 atm i'd suggest spending the extra $10-20 for the GOTY edition so you can get all the good DLC.. IMO the DLC for FO3 offers some of the funner missions and choices.

I really liked New Vegas.. But i admit i've sorta slowed down on playing it since Black Ops.. Even so, i've poured in around 25 hours so far and by the looks of it i'am not even have way thru.. The game is simpley amazeing, besides a few bugs & glitches here and there i have no complaints and am waiting for this DLC :)

Ok. Loved New Vegas. It's a damn good game and I was certainly pleasantly surprised, considering gamespot blew it up to almost look like a bad game. I especially like the faction elements and some of the other new features. However, I still liked Fallout 3 better. Yet I might be biased since Fallout 3 was the first fallout I played, and I never played 1 or 2.

bethesda bought the fallout franchise, hence they decide what's canon and whats not. therefore fallout 3 IS in fact a real fallout, although i will agree that you dont get the full fallout experience in it.

i like the game but there is one enemy who i can't stand. Those damn deathclaws, one of them can kill you in one swipe

I've read through many of the post here, and have seen it numerous times. But would someone describe to me me what a "True" or "Real" Fallout game is?

In my opinion Fallout New Vegas IS!! the true Fallout 3, and the actual Fallout 3 is the "REAL" spin off. Both are awesome games though, but I have to give the crown to Fallout New Vegas and it should be very clear to everyone else who the champ is once they fix the bugs.

@TxtBin: New Vegas. There is a lot more to explore and do, and I never experienced any big bugs on the 360 version, just some animation glitches which fix themselves after 2 seconds.

TxtBin

@SaltyMeatballs So which one would you recommend bro? NV or 3? I like the aesthetics of NV more (3 looked all green, dark and crappy) but the bugs seem to be a real-turn off so dunno. Heard theres patches coming out but still not sure.

new vegas deserves it. It's certainly better than Fallout 3. because it's "a real Fallout"!

If you think New Vegas isn't that buggy, you haven't played it long enough. I thought the same thing but when I hit around hour 40 in the game, it all went to hell. Quests that wouldn't progress are the worst of the problems but there are so many other issues it is hard to list them. Even ignoring the bugs, this game just isn't all that great. The story is Lame and I think they really screwed up a nice opportunity to make the vegas strip a memorable part of the game but it is kind of lame too. It just feels like the underachieving, less talented, less handsome brother of Fallout 3 but with about a dozen near catastrophic bugs.

Love the game, playing the 360 version and have not had any problems so far with bugs. But the Deathclaws are another problem.

I think the amount and kind of bugs you encounter is relative to your platform or particular system, I have this on Xbox (as i'd heard PC was particularly buggy) and have had lots of trouble with bugs, some of my friends only have a few, I know one other guy who says its unplayable. I found a way of beating my bugs (constant crashing after level 18 or so in Freeside and vegas) by wearing the old cowboy hat constantly lol. My freind on the PC can only play it in a window because if its full screen the sound lags about 5 mins behind.... what i'm saying is your experience in terms of the games huge flaws isnt the same as the next guy so cut us some slack! I hope they can take some time from counting the cash to make us a much needed patch!

tbh i am 20 hours into the game and the game crashed once, yes it is very glitchy but it's not that bad i played worse game before

For a game that came out on PC and console, 5 million isn't a lot. It probably means around 1 million sales on PC compared with 3 million for the original Fallout 3 on PC. And of course Fallout 1 and 2 both sold over 2 million, so it hasn't, so far, done as good on PC as any other Fallout, but it still has time. Maybe PC owners are waiting for the gold box vrsion as the publisher have said DLC will be coming out pretty soon, as PC gamers escpecially are very suspicious of DLC.

Just experienced my first major bug yesterday...I modded my weatherized 10mm with a clip extension and now whenever I equip the gun my character is surrounded by a giant mario-like question block. in 1st person everything is foggy and hard to see. The gun no longer goes boom (or even makes a silenced noise.) I just pull the trigger and people hopefully die. But overall the gun is too distracting to use anymore, which kinda sucks because it was a very efficient gun.

@TxtBin: FNV is definitely quicker to get started, though there are many side quests once I got to Vegas I literally didn't know what was my main quest as I had talked to many people.

Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas? I haven't played Fallout 3 in much detail but I felt it was too slow like how your a newborn and everything looks murky and deserted. New Vegas looks a bit more appealing, with the Strip and a more lively wasteland involved, plus its not as slow as your immediately in the game. So which one would you recommend for a new comer?

@5cott: I'd rather have a 25-35 hour game that I'll replay over and over and over like Fallout 3 (which I've finished 4 or 5 times thus far) than something which takes 60+ any day. I always want to see everything a game like this has to offer, so I play through 4 or 5 times, but when it takes 60 hours to finish it once then it becomes a little more daunting.... rather than head straight to my second play like I normally would this is going back on the shelf for a while once I finish it.

to people who are camplaining the game is buggy, look guys this can be solved by one patch which bethesda will release this week, what is important is the game itself is great, the fans of fallout are happy about it and falloutnw made a lots of new fans the sell record prove it,now compare this with star wars force unleashed 2 and Arcania: Gothic 4 which were disappointment to many of the people who are fans of these two games,so atleast bethesda did made game it promised.

Fallout deserves a 5 million sales, and even more! Fallout 3 and New Vegas has been my favourite game since I ever played them! I'm not looking forward to a new Fallout game, maybe because I just can't stop having tons of fun with New Vegas lol

So, epic single player games aren't dead just yet? :P Good to know, I got my copy at launch, haven't completed it but I'm 22 hours in. I don't think I will complete it, but I did complete Fallout 3.

@steelmouth, neither do bad games.... atleast not innitially. Fallout:NV has generated this figures because of FO3' reputation (which it gat partly due to fantastic reviews). But FO:NV could hurt the reputation and future sales of the FO Franchise. Although by the time FO4 comes out people who didnt like FO:NV will probably have long forgotten. Most likely that si what Bethesda is counting on, because they knew Obsidian's reputation when they hired them.

I'm dying to play this game, but I'm still on my first playthrough of Fable III. I have the version with the poker chips, played a little of the start of it, and it looks like fine. @hvypetals: im finding that the good games have almost too much longevity in them, and with every game having DLC it's hard keeping my attention on any one title at a time (and being an active WOW player doesn't help me in that respect). of course, i'm multi-platform as well, so I have loads of things I either haven't played or have just had a quick look at. For example, several great unplayed DS games, some 360 stuff I bought for cheap, wanting to play through Mass Effect II for a second time, even though my Forza III driver is only level 35 and has 2-3 seasons to get through. Hell, I'm not sure I'll be able to finish New Vegas in time for Cataclysm at this rate! For this reason alone, I've sworn off buying game sequels no matter how good they be (a decision made well after having preordered New Vegas and other sequels btw). Oh, and I never got to play Modern Warfare II online at all for the reasons above.

im playin the PC version and it rocks! ive already put in 20 hours and am only 10% done with the overall game. Compare that to 4 hours for MoH. This game is superbly written, massive and super quick mods popping up everyday. This is the kind of game that shines on the PC and brings back a lot of memories to my old PC gaming days playing WASTELAND. I love it. Worth every single penny i plunked down for it. You cant say that often in todays gaming world.

Randomisrandom

Actually the PC version works quite fine. Im on my 3th playthrew and I have yet to experience a gamebreaking bug. Sure some really minor graphical stuff, but it never was a deal breaker. All in all it is a great game and defenetly worth your time(and money) if you are into rpg-s. Its good to hear the sales are fine despite the bad publicity.

@TTDog i have to disgree with ya there (not saying your opinion is nothing) but surely you would rather spend money on a full priced game that warrants 60+ hour single player rather than 4 - 6 hour ? Obviously a major factor would be time constraints and so a 4-6 hour game may be more worthwhile, but surely in the long-run it is not?

i bought fallout 3 at launch, and actually found it a bit hard so i stopped playing, but i bought fallout new vegas at launch, and havent played it yet, ive spent my whole time downloading awsome looking mods. the game looks awsome and im glad this game has sold so well. obsidian and bethesda are great devs, making some of the best games. morrowind is the best single player rpg ever, and they continue to churn out good games, with the exception of alpha protocol. well done bethesda and obsidian!

glitchy and buggy yes, fun and addictive yes, should they of held off release til Nov or Dec yes, would I buy it again at launch knowing what I know now yes. @TTDog game is no way too big, thats the worst complaint about any game. Im 65 hrs in and still have half the game to go . Thats an awesome feeling

The games great... but too big, the phrase "Less is More" seem appropriate... 60 hours for one run through, when there are four different endings is going a little too far.

I like the guns and gameplay in NV better than Fallout 3. But I think the setting and factions in 3 were way more interesting
