Fallout 3 patched, first add-on due Jan. 27

Update fixes several major bugs in all versions of Bethesda's award-winning RPG; Operation Anchorage expansion coming to PC and 360 in two weeks.

Fans of Fallout 3 got a double shot of good news today. First, Bethesda dated the forthcoming Operation Anchorage expansion pack for the game, the first of three exclusive add-ons for the PC and Xbox 360 editions of the game. Available only as a download from Xbox Live or Games For Windows Marketplace, it will arrive in two weeks on January 27 and cost 800 Microsoft points ($10) on both platforms. It will let players participate in a simulation re-creating a battle between Chinese and US forces in pre-nuclear-holocaust Alaska. February and March will see two more PC/360 Fallout 3 add-ons, the last of which will expand the main storyline and raise the level cap to 30.

In addition to the Operation Anchorage date, Bethesda announced a patch for all three versions of Fallout 3: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows-based PCs. The update (v1.1) addresses a variety of bugs encountered in the sprawling game, which can be played for more than 40 hours and re-creates dozens of square miles in and around the ruins of Washington, DC. The problems were sources of criticism for the game, which GameSpot crowned as 2008's Role-Playing Game of the Year and PC Game of the Year last month. A full list of issues addressed is below.

This almost certainly won't be the last patch for Fallout 3. Just look at how long it took to fix Oblivion (if they ever did...).

and the game is still glitchy. it crashes on the PC for tons of memory leaks, getting stuck in terrain, visual glitches, bodies freaking out when they're dead.

I was kind of nervous about the first DLC because I wasn't for sure how they would integrate a battle in Alaska before the holocaust and stay true to the original but the did a great job as I should have known they would. I have played it for a couple of hours and seem to have at least that much more to do. It is kind of like seeing a friend you haven't seen in a few years it is very familiar but there are a couple of new things you notice. If you liked Fallout 3 and have it on the 360 or PC then I would get it if I could.

i wish they made a video to show how the world came to be the way it is in Fallout

Nice, I never had any really big problems with Fall Out. One crash where I had to reset my 360 was all. As far as I noticed of course.

@KevinFidyk: The latest quote we have from a PR pertaining to the time of the release is as follows: "The content will go live tonight as early as midnight (EST) on both Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live. Please note we have no way of knowing the exact time it will be available on Microsoft’s services."

To DendromutantX: You should be thankful for whatever inferior version you have which I'm guessing is the PC version. If I had it my way ALL games would be made for the Xbox 360.

@ killab419: Dude you gotta be full of sh** bro. you worked for companys that worked for MS and Sony... haha i gotta say i dont believe it. you are probably like the rest of the 15 yr old fan boys and just read "the ps3's hardware/encoding is more difficult to write and the ps3's full potential has not been unearthed..." i had a PSX, PS2, never owned a xbox until i got the 360 and i gotta say if you compare lists of reasons to get one or the other....xbox360 wins(only reason i say this is because my g/f wanted to know because she is a video game console virgin and she looked through it and came up with that answer.... and we both love mac so dont think we are spooning MS) you know what i give my condolences to Sony and the ps fanboys because i know you will all verbally gang rape me.... BUT TO THE POINT AT HAND HELL YEAH DLC FOR ME FALLOUT IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES IVE EVER PLAYED, BETHESDA YOU GUYS DID A GREAT JOB, I HATED YOU FOR A LONG TIME I PLAYED MORROWIND AND TOOK A VOW OF ABSTINENCE TO ANYTHING BETHESDA, O.P. can't freakin wait for the Anch expansion. I lived there for 4 years.. interested to see what they include in it... I was hoping to see the old Walter Reed in D.C. That would be creepy. I spent about a year at Walter Reed after getting hurt in Iraq... Defin would've made a cool add in

dude i got my 1600 ms points today! im getting that s*** as soon as it pops up in the DLC. This is going to be so amazing, your supposed to be able to take all the weapons, and the armor/ninja looking suit ect. that you get to the real world because i guess that it's in a sim like the tranquility lane. but the pictures look beautiful. i can't wait i am counting the days..

ElectrolightSH
ElectrolightSH

They should not be fixing any XP/Cap exploits in the Xbox 360 version since the PC players have cheats, game editor, and a command prompt those exploits are all we have; and because the PC version has all those extras and is cheaper use 360 players should get ALL DLC for free. I Hate Bethesda for giving the PC versions of Oblivion and Fallout 3 extra features.

Strigidae

Did anyone take a word count on that list (LOL). This game is freakin' awesome either way. Can't wait for the DLC to hit XBL, now I remember one of the reasons I got a 360 (LOL). That RROD was really dragin' my morale down (LOL).

Dimandose1422
Dimandose1422

Now that's exciting! I haven't had very many bugs on the Xbox360, just a few short pauses, and then the occasional crazy rag doll from large explosions. Other than those, every problem I got came from a bad choice in game play, haha

I have Fallout 3 for the 360 and I have been playing it for a long time now. I have encountered many many bugs and honestly, it really didn't prevent me from playing this game. Now that Bethesda fixed the glitches, that is even better. This is a game to remember fellas, for eternity.

i think bethesda need to sort out the real problems with this game, i still get graphical problems when areas of the game just dissapear and turn black. i also got a sound issue. i resent my xbox and it worked fine again. this is a good game, a flawed one but good. next time bethesda please beta test it before you sell it.

For pc users who don't mind minor console use... 1. Open console (~) 2. Type setgs iMaxCharacterLevel # 3. # => what you want your cap to be 4. Proceed as before Just remember to put the command back in each time you start the game.

I'm actually ok with there being a level cap. it meant i had to be more choosy with what i upgraded. Glad to here they fied a lot of bugs i cant wait to get this add on.

My PS3 crashes all the time now. Constant lag is a problem also. I put a fan in front and behind my PS3 because I thought it was overheating. At least I know now that isn't the problem.

Man, Only raising the level cap until the third add-on and then only to a 30? Come on you guys give us a break! Add new levels to go for on every add-on... In my humble opinion only using a 20 level cap in the first place wasn't right...

Before the patch was released I know that a lot of people had a hell of a time with Walter disappearing from Megaton, but I still can't find him even after the patch. I don't know if the patch didn't fix that problem or if I'm just missing him. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem.

people are so quick to point out the bad, with no consideration of the good whatsoever. that's at you, trex24. @lamprey263 the third dlc will make the level cap 30 and make it so you can keep playing after the last story mission. i think its due out in march if im not mistaken...

If any of your are running into mouse acceleration issues on the menus (PC), fForegroundMouseMult=1.0 in [CONTROLS] in your ini files should fix it. You can tweak the '1.0' to whatever you want. (This is from the official forums.)

40 hours? I've put in 104 hours & I haven't finished the primary campaign. In fact, I've avoided it to wait until I've gone through as many other side missions as I can before getting back to the main mission. :) Looking forward to the expansions.

I have Fallout 3 on the PS3. The game is great, except for all of the bugs. Bethesda should be ashamed to have released such a great game with so many bugs that diminish the experience. I've lost count of how many times the game locked the system up. Then you have to replay from the last save point. Also, occasionally your character will start spinning like you drank too much vodka in reality. There are parts in the game where you get stuck and can't jump or do any other controller action to get out. While this list is long, it's disappointing I haven't gotten to most of these bugs considering the numerous bugs I've experienced. I guess I get to look forward to many more bugs in the rest of the game. While this game, if it was more bug free would be an easy GOTY choice, the cheap arse developers at Bethesda deserve, by far, THE WORST SOFTWARE QA AWARD IN THE HISTORY OF GAMING! I'm talking since Atrai pong days! Anyone second or third that? Or was there any testing on this game? Did they just program it and ship it? They had to know it was bug filled. This is unethical. Ruins the enjoyment of an otherwise great game. V1.1 will not fix all of the bugs, even considering the long list. And for them to say "this is a rare bug we're fixing" is bull. They have no way of knowing how many people experienced it and didn't complain because the bugs were so numerous. It's like they left the QA to us players. But I'm not about to sit down with a thick legal pad and try to document every error I experience while playing this game, as I'd likely run out of paper even if I wrote tiny, tiny letters. Funny, but did anyone notice that this bug patch came out just before their sale of add on content? They have to know they have alot of POed players out there that won't buy add on content if the main game is so bug filled. Why lay down more money for bug filled, non QAed add-onn content. They obviously don't care about their customers, or they would have released a patch to fix many of the major bugs already, not just before add-on sale time. I say don't buy their add-ons as a way of protesting their incompetent QA department. Of course, only Bethesda knows the true culprit. Maybe they have a good QA department that found all of the bugs, but Bethesda management decided not to spend the money to fix them and said "ship it!" Anyone posting here work at Bethesda? Tell us who dropped the ball on this and cheated me out of at least half the price of this game by shipping "radroach" bug filled code?
