Fable: The Journey for 'serious' gamers, says Lionhead

[UPDATE] Developer declares upcoming Kinect-exclusive made for those who don't want to merely "jump around their living room"; Fable creators defend game.

Fable: The Journey is for "serious" gamers, according to developer Lionhead Studios. In an update to the game's website, Lionhead said the Kinect-required game was built for those who don't want to simply "jump around their living room."

Why so serious?

"If you own a Kinect--or are planning on buying one in the near future--and you are a serious gamer who doesn't want to jump around their living room, then this is the game to look out for," reads the update, designed to reveal the game's box art (at right).

Today's statement is a change from the messaging Lionhead used at Develop 2011 in July 2011. At the event, Lionhead lead artist Tak Sato explained that Fable: The Journey would be lighter and more accessible than past Fable games. He added that Lionhead reduced the adult humor that was a staple of previous Fable titles and that the game was being aimed at a broader audience than before.

[UPDATE] Speaking to Eurogamer, Fable creators Simon and Dene Carter defended Fable: The Journey. The brothers called criticisms of the game "unfair."

"It's unfair that game's getting a lot of stick," Simon Carter said. "It looks great. What they're trying to do, by marrying core gaming with Kinect, is obviously tricky. It's a difficult control mechanism to get into core gaming. I think they're doing a great job."

"We all know it's a franchise. We all know it's a brand," Dene Carter added. "The fact somebody wants to do something a bit different with that brand while we're waiting for the next big game, that doesn't seem like something people should get too angry about. If you don't like it, don't buy it."

Simon Carter explained, "When Mario Kart came out, nobody was going, what?! There's no jumping! That's not the next Mario game! What are you talking about Miyamoto! I hate you! I'm going to burn your house down and kill your children!"

A release date for Fable: The Journey has not been announced. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's latest coverage.

It's the Oregon Trail of Fable... I love Fable, but this doesn't look to appealing to me. There has been no games so far that would make me want to spend money on the Kinect.

Wait... Did they just compare Fable: The Journey with Super Mario Kart?

so far kinect is mainly for kids there has probably only have been one rated m which is "rise of nightmares" would be kinda nice if they made it the same for this as well.

A game for serious gamers? That will be "lighter and more accessible than past Fable games" and no longer has the adult humor the game is known for and is being aimed at a broader audience ...... Contradiction MUCH !? And I don't know about you guys, but the previous fable games where already pretty darn accessible lol. Oh, and btw, you can jump in the original Mario Kart on SNES. Hop with the right bumper or jump with the feather ... Booyah! It's as if nobody even bothers to know anything about the things they say anymore ... =/

we'll see... he might mean 'its not on rails' in that you choose what colour of fireball to shoot, but walking will still be on rails.

don't "fix" the game if it ain't broke. unfortunately lionhead doesn't believe in that old saying.

I got my kids Kinect and they love it. It's great that it makes games accessible to those who do find the thumbsticks a bit confusing (if you don't believe me, you should see my wife on any FPS), encourages the not so serious gamer to "have a go" and as a family we enjoy playing the Kinect games together. But I feel it is a long way off from the smooth control system that serious gamers demand. The only way this will improve is if game producers start producing more serious games, whether fully Kinect (Fable) or with a Kinect controlled part (Ghost Recon) and learning from their mistakes. Hopefully the experience gained and the lessons learnt will help future games get the most out of Kinect. Perhaps the best thing to come from this game is opening up a new genre to a wider audience. After all, FPS's are great but, in my opinion, a little too abundant.

People still care about Fable? After Fable 3 I figured even die hard fans of the franchise had given up. Who knows? Maybe PM departure was just what the franchise needed but I am not holding my breath.

Hmm... I've never really been a Fable fan, and I thought that I may buy this game. Until I heard it was Kinect Required... FUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

@catsimboy You read my mind. I liked Fable 3, but like all Lionhead games it was vastly over hyped. Humility is a great trait to have. I am sorry to say but Peter Molyneux lost his touch after 90s/early 2000. His name on projects doesn't mean much to me now days.

If it's using Kinect...how can it ever be taken seriously...

catsimboy

I'm starting to seriously believe these people are closet politicians. Between them and Molyneux they hype up their games and try to spin all their little pet ideas as the next evolution of gaming. Remember the "touch' system of Fable 3? What a load of crap. You just dragged people around and most of the time your hands would come apart and it was just the AI following you.

Game for serious gamers. Okay. But you're making it even more accessible than your previous games? I felt the original game was too easy once you got a a few levels in. The second got even easier and the third was just... Why do I need melee or healing potions? I think they're confusing accessibility with difficulty. Easy to pick up the game and get started? Alright. But what about the serious and hardcore gamers that want to be challenged? Then these two idiots are comparing Fable to Mariokart. Because taking Super Mario characters and putting them in races is the same thing as stripping the controller from a game series and making players that would otherwise not care for the Kinect have to buy a Kinect if they want to play it. Ugh why are people so special. ;~;

As stated before Fable was by far superior to the other entries. II was decent and III was okay but nothing great. I understand 360 hardware isn't new anymore but the frame rate issues were imo unacceptable. Definitely going to pass on this one. An actual game for serious gamers is coming out in Sept. Borderlands 2

Im sorry but anything that has been released by lionhead since fable:tlc has been a total and complete failure. Try bringing out a decent game first and then talk about it being for serious gamers.

When Mario Kart came out, I could play it with the same controller I was using to play previous Mario games. Did not have to go buy a new accessory. And you really can't compare yourself to Miyamoto. No where even close.

fk u why only kinect make it for both plz this is unfair

You've got to remember, Lionhead is part of Microsoft Game Studios. F:TJ being Kinect-only is exactly like the PC version of Halo 2 being Vista-only. It's a lame attempt at using a popular IP to get you to buy another product that you otherwise don't want. (And sadly, there are some people who WILL buy a Kinect just because they liked the previous Fables.) Microsoft's strategy has ALWAYS been bundling. When a product isn't good enough to sell on its own merits, you bundle it with something more attractive. MSGS has very few IPs to pick from, so don't be overly surprised if you see Kinect Gears or Kinect Halo in the future. ;-D That they used their languishing Fable IP first just means that they know its in decline -- it's the one they can most easily sacrifice if the marketing strategy fails. Kudos to Molyneux for leaving -- shows he still has some integrity left. I'd walk too if a publisher was running my IP into the ground for the sake of hardware sales.

Adult humor in Fable games? They mean like farting in people's face? There is nothing adult in the last 2 fable games, they are mainstream barely decent games aimed at children. They are nothing like the first game.

This is the most contradicting load of **** to ever come from Lionhead. Even with Peter being gone, they are trying to BS everyone. Hahahah, this is the funniest article I have read on here in forever.

mario113

well isn't that a little immature throwing insults at other developers, the onl reason people are so upset is that fable is supposed to be a fantasy RPG not a very good rpg but a passable one at best, all he seems to be doing is trying to reinvent the wheel I understand not all rpgs are the same but really how many morality angle do we need now we have worry about the horse?

alphabetguy

I've come to the conclusion that Peter Molyneux does not know how to make RPG's, he spends the most effort on the most minor things.. horse morality, really?

Wow sad... "serious gamers" huh? now they just sound like carnie's heckling me to play crap we both know sucks. I was hoping with PM leaving lionhead they would stop making stupid statements but apparently thats still going strong.

I didn't even know this game existed! Well, if it's Kinect-only, I probably won't buy it. Not to say that a Kinect fable game can't be good, I just don't plan on buying Kinect any time soon.

Soz to say this but fable shouldnt be like this because its RPG and this isnt. this isnt going to sale and see why the head of lionhead studios the creator left .

I don't see why a game that utilises Kinect can't be serious. Although this particular Fable game certainly has no reason to be considered serious by any stretch of the imagination.

So I am not a serious gamer until I have investing my money into a Kinect? :/

"Serious gaming" and "Kinect" cannot be in the same sentence, Dear Lionhead. THEY CANNOT. So don't tell me this is for serious gamers, please. YOu're just embarassing yourself even more.

Kinect is good fun. i have not got round to buying one it but i am not an hater. there is room for controller and kinect gaming to live side by side and there is really no need for all the hating

DethSkematik

I'm a little mixed about this...I mean, the adult humor and violence is what made the story book settings a delightful sacrelige :P. Kind of a bummer that it's Kinect only, because no matter how the series kept declining, it was one of my guilty pleasure games.

Setho10
Setho10

I usually give developers the benefit of the doubt but Fable is a series that has consistently over promised and under delivered so forgive me for being a bit skeptical. It also doesn't help that Kinect Star Wars is getting trashed by both players and critics and Diabolical Pitch got a 3.0.
