F-Zero X leads pack onto VC

Nintendo's hallmark 64-bit racer cruises to Wii's downloadable-game service with SNES fighter SFII Turbo: Hyper Fighting and TG-16 beat-'em-up China Warrior.

With only four ports to date, the Nintendo 64 has by far been given the least amount of attention on the Wii's Virtual Console. However, this week's release list boosts that number to a solid handful, as F-Zero X makes its way to Nintendo's downloadable-game service. Finishing second and third behind the futuristic racer this week are Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and China Warrior for the TurboGrafx-16.

Arguably one of the best, and most difficult, racers of the 64-bit era, Nintendo's own F-Zero X on the N64 was notable for being one of the first home-console racing games to maintain 60 frames per second with multiple opponents onscreen. F-Zero X features several different modes, such as grand prix cup, time trial, and death race mode. Also included is a versus mode, where up to four players can speed through distant galaxies via split-screen play. F-Zero X is rated E for Everyone and costs 1,000 Wii points ($10).

Arguably one of the best seems to be a recurrent theme with this week's VC releases, as the Super Nintendo version of Capcom's Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting also wades into the fray. While eclipsed by the arcade original, the SNES version of Hyper Fighting features a faster play speed than pervious iterations in the acclaimed fighting series. Character balancing has also been updated in this version, and players can bring the fight with a repertoire of 12 world warriors in all. Hyper Fighting accommodates two players, is rated T for Teen, and runs for 800 Wii points ($8).

Released part and parcel with the TG-16 in Japan, Hudson's China Warrior transports players to ancient China, where they must assume the role of kung fu master Wang in their quest to topple the self-evidently evil Dark Emperor. With a style that more than coincidently resembles martial-arts legend Bruce Lee, players can punch, kick, and jump-kick their way through four levels and as many bosses. The China Warrior fights alone in this E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older side-scroller, and will set gamers back 600 Wii points ($6).

...You know, most of the games you guys are demanding are not controlled by nintendo, os it's up to the third party who owns them to put it up for download. As for paper mario, I'd guess it'll be out soon enough, probably within the month, as has been the case for other N64 games that have seen a japanese release first. Can't wait myself, could never find that game for the N64 at a reasonable price, and still can't.

Why do people complain about the price of VC games? Ten bucks is not that steep. Didn't we use to pay sixty dollars for N64 games back in the day? It helps when you have a job you know.

I love F-Zero X but I still have it on my 64. I was hoping they would add the expansion. I would have bought it then.

PatchMaster > Thank god someone else agrees. F-Zero X was one of the best games I had for the N64. I'm so glad they brought it on the VC. So many fond memories....

Man, I was really hoping that SF II Turbo would be delayed until Nintendo can make the VC games multiplayer online. I guess that was never going to happen.

Boy, you've got to feel bad for any schmuck who bought the original SNES Street Fighter II now that the superlative sequel is out today. Still, two strong games out this week. China Warrior is yet another WTF? game that maybe somebody might check out.

Street Fighter II: Turbo...yes. Too bad they didn't release this one first. Oh, well, I think I'm getting this.

Stop complaining about the games that come out every week. Nintendo isn't gonna release all their AAA classics early on in the Wii's lifetime. Even when OoT & Super Mario World came out most of the comments were just people complaining. No one here is gonna honor your request, so there is no point.

Nintendo, if you want an N64 game to make up for the lack of offering in the VC console, may I suggest Ogre 64.

"Arguably one of the best" is what Gamespot says about F-Zero X. Funny....It only got a 7.5 and got somewhat slammed in the review...

to chisoxrule: Well personally i know that with like mario kart i've always been more fond of the 64 version as well as more fond of SSB instead of SSBM just personal opinions and even liked the original mario kart over GC version. Like i said that's a matter of opinion :), but would be a reason why they can put out earlier versions sometimes people do prefer earlier versions over the newer ones :).

F-Zero X for 10 bucks is a rip. You can get GX for around 6 bucks, and it's a TON better. Hyper Fighting? I thought it was just Street Fighter II Turbo... And where the heck is Paper Mario? NP announced it over a month ago...

F Zero X is just 'ok', I personally thought it was a let down. GX is a better game, but the originals and GBA vers are really where this series shined. Let's get developing a new Wii and DS vers Nintendo!!

To the person who said there no point in getting F-Zero X need to shut up, just because F-Zero GX has better graphic and update doesn't mean that you shouldn't get X, cause If you're a real F-Zero fan you'll get both.

These would probably be a lot better if you couldn't find the majority of these games so easily as roms online to run on emulator's

If VC weren't so outrageously expensive, I'd probably be disappointed over what a wasted opportunity it's been.

F-Zero X and Street Fighter II: Turbo... whats not to like? But I'm still waiting for Paper Mario and Super Smash Bros (which will probably come out just before Super Smash Bros Brawl). Perfect Dark? Golden Eye? Where are the N64 games? Where are the RPGs? Oh well, another week a few more virtual console games.
