Darksiders kicked the year off right upon its launch in January, being warmly received by critics and achieving a measure of sales success. As announced by THQ during its third-quarter earnings report earlier this month, the game shipped 1.2 million units worldwide across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 edition, in particular, performed well, just slipping into the NPD Group's top 10 for January with 171,000 units sold.

Looking to spur those sales further, THQ today announced the Xbox 360 and PS3 game would be receiving a demo--one with its length clocking in at roughly 90 minutes. The free sampler gives gamers access to the entire first dungeon of the game, called the Twilight Cathedral. Players will be able to thrash monsters, solve puzzles, and gather loot, as well as engage in two boss battles.

Darksiders tells the story of War, one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, and his mighty flaming steed Ruin. As the story goes, War inadvertently triggers the end of days after being tricked by a demon known as The Destroyer. The hornswoggled demigod then sets down a path of wanton carnage in a quest to destroy The Destroyer's minions along with the demon itself.

The extended Darksiders demo will be available through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network on February 25. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Darksiders.
