Ex-Witcher, Silent Hill, F.E.A.R. devs reveal open-world gothic psychological FPS

Edgar Allan Poe-inspired "Death In Candlewood" seeking $60,000 on Kickstarter.

A new studio founded by former Witcher, Silent Hill, and F.E.A.R. developers, Rosebud Games, today announced a new "gothic psychological FPS" called Death In Candlewood.

The Spanish developer is seeking $60,000 on Kickstarter to get the game made. Right now, funding stands at $370 from 23 backers.

Death In Candlewood is an open-world game that is inspired by the works of American author Edgar Allan Poe. Described as a "love story between the living and the dead," the game is set in the "darkest corners" of 1940s America, somewhere in the Northeast.

Death In Candlewood takes place over the course of a single night in the life of Ray Dune, a doctor whose relationship with a "reclusive psychiatrist" named Lester Caravan becomes deadly. Dune's son disappears, and he sets off into the Candlewood Mountains to not only save his son, but also himself.

Rosebud Games says Death In Candlewood is "not a traditional FPS." Its world is described as "expansive," spanning over 1,000 navigable buildings and a total world size of 6km². You can either walk through the world on foot, drive cars, or swim. The developer also says you'll get to use "uncommon" weapons and battle "uncommon" enemies.

Death In Candlewood is expected to launch sometime in 2015 for PC. You can see the game in action via the Kickstarter campaign trailer below. BioShock environment lead Jay Kyburz is providing consulting work for the game.

Please don't drag E.A. Poe's name through the mud by attaching him to this project. I like video games, but Poe is sacred.

Impressive talent behind this  :)

Lol I simply clicked this article without reading the headline properly and by looking at the pic I thought it was some PC game from 2002 that is being sold for in GOG.com :P

the game doesn't take 60K to make fucking watch the video before you say shit they said in the vid they have been working on this game for over 2 years already and have funded it them selves up until now and the 60K i am guessing will just be to make it a bit better add some finishing touches and shit

"Silent Hill, F.E.A.R. devs" Stopped reading there

Sounds interesting. To the ones hating on the FPS part, I'd say it's not the first person, nor even the shooter what people dislike, but the tired rehashes, the linearity, the nonexisting campaigns, the disgusting angry manchildren comunities, etc. First person can be put to great use for immersion.

I'll sure keep an eye on this one.

Witcher + Silent Hill + F.E.A.R = BADASS

Wow Witcher, Silent Hill and F.E.A.R. That is quite a combo. I'll be watching these guys closely I think from now on.

This is a development dream team! Patiently waiting for the game

Please, no more kickstarter projects.  I'd like to see the current ones and their promises come to fruition first.

Looks like Bioshock and Silent Hill made a baby.

I dont see how they game they describe can be made on 60K, when something like Bioshock costs millions.

Yep, no more crowd funding for me. I was one of those idiots that funded the Oculus and got burnt when they sold it for Billions to the hated Facebook guru, I believe his name is Satan.

Unless you go with retro graphics and no voice acting, I don't know how you can make a good game with $60k.

A level of cynicism and distrust come standard with any crowd funding article from here on out.

I was so excited as I was reading the article title... until I got to "FPS"

This game looks interesting makes me yearn for a new kingsfield game oddly enough man I loved that series!

I read "FPS" and then immediately lost interest. Seriously, how much more do we need to bleed out this genre until we can finally put it to rest for a while? I'm not saying never revisit it, but come on, can we at least take a break from it and let it build some freshness again? I've pointed and shot at enough baddies to last two lifetimes already. Simply changing some atmosphere and aesthetics around isn't going to cut it as a new experience anymore.

Looks like Condemned.. They need to do either a sequel or a reboot for that series. Such a scary game on consoles

@tom2750  They should't start something if they cannot finish it.

23 backers only 370 dollars.  Goes to show.

@syztem From the kickstarter page "previous experience on games like Silent Hill: Origins, F.E.A.R. Extraction Point and The Witcher". The Witcher is good, haven't played Fear Extraction Point (75 on metacritic, though, not bad) and never cared to play any Silent Hill games. Silent Hill: Origins was originally for PSP (78 metacritic score) and then got ported to PS2 (70 metacritic score).

Hurvl
Hurvl

@xdluffy No! The best thing about these kickstarters is that they're making the games for PC and sometimes exclusively for the PC. I hope that remains the case, muahahahaa!

Hurvl

@noandno Yeah, F.E.A.R the BADASS Witcher lurking on the Silent Hill.

@Bhemont

Don't worry, facebook will buy Kickstarter so we can all be part of the collective.

Warlord_Irochi
Warlord_Irochi

@Bhemont Man, that is like saying "No more game releases until every single tittle that has been announced is out" Some kickstarter projects will work and other won't, and it's not like the existence of one will affect the others directly.

tom2750
tom2750

@divinejester the game doesn't cost 60K to make if you watched the video you would of hear them say they have already have been making the game for over 2 years and been funding it themselves but now they want 60K so they can make it better and also finish making it within the next 12 months

Hurvl
Hurvl

@Sethalos Oh, don't worry, you'll be able to buy an Oculus Rift that is probably cheaper and better than the rivals, simply because of the Facebook buy out.

Warlord_Irochi
Warlord_Irochi

@lostn That is pretty much be support money like they did with Carmageddon Raincarnation. $60k falls short indeed (and we are talking about Spain here which is within the eurozone, so it's around €43.5k (checked right now)

insloanwetrust
insloanwetrust

@lostn  Maybe that's their goal but once they reach it they will say thanks for helping us achieve our goal. If you would like insert improved voice acting, character models, customization ect help us read 80K then if you would like improved this and that help us reach 100K etc.

Warlord_Irochi

@attirex Gotts love one-liner comments from wannabee experts that only manage to embarrass themselves lol.
Yes, sure, a screeshot is enough for you, nevermind the talent background of the member of that studio. Such criteria xDD

insloanwetrust

@attirex  You know nothing of the gameplay but yet make up your mind on one article? I guess you're the ignorant casual gamer who's missed out on a lot of great games just because they where not mainstream AAA blockbusters.

Hurvl
Hurvl

@baldy40 @tom2750It's now at 98 backer and 1861 dollars actually and they have 29 days left, so it's not too late yet. I'm sure they could finish it without funding, but the end product would be worse and also delayed quite a lot. Your "don't start what you can't finish" mentality doesn't make sense here, because most video game kickstarter projects already features a work-in-progress game, like screenshots and whatnot. They have to have something to show potential backers, so that they have an idea of what the game is like.

atornsock

@Hurvl @xdluffy  Then they'll barely make any money. You guys are too busy being WoW and League of Legends addicts.

jer_1

@gamefreak215jd @Bhemont  I would suspect later next year. They've not even released the dogfighting module, they still have a LOT of content to make and a long way to go.

lostn

@insloanwetrust @lostn I understand how stretch goals work, but the basic game for 60k, I just don't know how you can make one that doesn't suck. A puzzler is easy, but a shooter is more expensive than that. We're looking at millions unless they can borrow assets from another game.

Hurvl

@atornsock I'm too busy being backlog addicted. Witcher 1 is such a great new game, so graphically impressive compared to other games I'm playing :P.

Hurvl

@baldy40 Lol, do you guys work in unison? First tom2570 says that they've been working on it for over 2 years and then baldy40 says "don't start what you can't finish". I've seen those exact two comments before, it's like freakin' deja vu.
