Ex-Sacred 2 devs form Gaming Minds Studios

Kalypso Media backs upstart studio emerging from ashes of Ascaron bankruptcy, confirms continuation of the Patrician series.

In April, Sacred 2 developer Ascaron Entertainment filed for bankruptcy protection in its native Germany. Publisher Kalypso Media picked up the majority of the developer's licenses and assets last month and this week added some ex-Ascaron staff as well.

Sacred 2 turned out to be Ascaron's swan song, but Kalypso will continue on with some of the developer's franchises.

Kalypso Media announced that it is the majority shareholder in the newly formed Gaming Minds Studios, a Gutersloh, Germany, outfit made up of 15 ex-Ascaron employees. Gaming Minds is headed up by lead designer Daniel Dumont and technical director Kay Struve.

The publisher isn't waiting long to get a return on its investment. As part of its acquisition, Kalypso now owns the rights to Ascaron franchises Port Royale, Darkstar One, On the Ball, and The Patrician. Its first release using that library of intellectual properties will come this summer with a continuation of the Patrician historic strategy series. The new game will be The Patrician III, presumably not the same product as Ascaron's 2003 PC title Patrician III: Rise of the Hanse.

The Gaming Minds startup boosts Kalypso's development presence in Germany. Last November, the publisher established Realmforge Studios in Munich. Between Realmforge and Gaming Minds, Kalypso has four new games in development with tentative 2010 release windows.

it's a lot more different then diablo, stop calling it diablo clone, it's way better, engine is different , all the game play is different. Sacred rules, waiting for Ice 7 Blood Expansion :0

I own sacred 2 on PC and The PS3, I have to say that it's much much better game on the PC. I bought it on PS3 to play with friends and found myself not enjoying it as much. If you are thinking getting this game and you have a PC, then that is my recomendation.

I played Sacred, Sacred Underworld and actually i'm playing Sacred 2 Fallen Angel. Personally, I think it's one of the best RPG series (But, after Diablo of course). I wish that they make an expansion pack for Sacred 2 because because is a really fun game to play with your pals. Long live to Sacred! :-P

Hope they'll create more of an adventure style RPG than a diablo clone in the future.

Sacred 2 is good, i prefer Sacred Gold though, but either way i hope they carry on with the series!

I think Sacred 2 is a great game and already have hours put into it on the PS3. I do think however another Champions of Norrath for PS3 would blow this game out of the water. Assuming they were able to allow the players to use L2/R2 to map more buttons rather than just being able to map two spells to the (Triangle and Circle buttons) and use D-Pad for potions/changing weapons.

I loved the first Sacred game and I truly wish they can get it all together to make a new Sacred that will surpass the older ones.

Sacred 2 isn't a hidden gem. I've played the game for hours and it just sucks in comparison to other games of the same genre. The graphics looks like they were pulled from the previous generation, parts of the game isn't just buggy...they're flat out broken, and the story is weak (if not worse). I bought this game day one, and I'm sorely dissapointed in how Ascaron barely finished this game.

I wish them all the luck in the world, Sacred 2 is one of my favorite hidden gems on the 360.

As long as they don't abandon the series and change the mechanics, I really don't care who's working on it.

i found sacred does indeed work better on console. im glad we got it for 360 and not our gaming laptops (which are more than up to the task!)

I was all excited about Sacred 2 on the PC until I found out that it was using another idiotic DRM scheme. Another studio bites the dust that believed that DRM schemes would help sales... when will they ever learn.

Sacred 2 on the consoles is pretty fun. It has a huge open world and the gameplay is pretty solid. Not to mention you gotta love a game that has voice acting that's so bad that it's awesome. I honestly was waiting to be called "the master of unlocking" by someone... think the original Resident Evil voice acting + the closest thing you can get to Diablo on consoles. It's hysterical and still has good gameplay. I'd give it a 9 / 10.

Despite just "decent" reviews, I'm really enjoying Sacred 2 on 360.

Sacred 2 on console was the biggest disappointment of the year (so far) for me. I was promised something as fun as Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance or even Champions Of Norrath. They failed to deliver and I returned it after one day. Total garbage. No excuse.

Sacred 2 may not have turned out to be as good as we'd hoped but that doesn't mean the Sacred series has to fade away

Sacred 2 is the perfect example of these games that gets underrated because of some bugs or annoyances but you get more fun then a 9.0 rated game in the end! (Well... that was my case)

FlashCharge

Sacred 2 needed a lot of work before it was released. Grand ambition, but developers may not have been up to it. Maybe with the infusion of new minds they might produce a winner next time.

I thought Sacred 2 was the bomb the first few weeks I had it, but then I just slowly become less enthralled. There was just so much more that could of been done, but if they make another and improve the gameplay, customization, and replayablilty I'll totally hit that up.

ya...bcoz sacred 2 really a nice game....just the weak story and bug make the game downgraded..!!!hope the new developer make sacred 2 expansion for more better!!!

Was hoping Sacred would be a much bigger version of Dark Alliance or Champions of Norrath. Turns out it didn't even come close. Big world, but blah combat, although magic was fun. Kinda floored me when the reviewer started off by saying "these kinds of RPG's traditionally play better on PC's" which anyone who has played Champions of Norrath knows is a big crock worthy of getting that reviewer fired. Somebody stop letting PC lovers review console games. They're biased. Just look at the Halo Wars review: guy says the game is good and fun, but it's not on PC, so bad review score. Back on topic, Sacred 2 was okay, but based on what I saw I couldn't care less what happens to those guys. They had a great opportunity to make the game work on the 360, but they clearly didn't try hard enough.

So, if I read it correctly Gaming Minds has gained the rights to several IPs ("majority" of licenses) from Ascaron, but Sacred wasn't listed among them. Did they get Sacred or not? If not, then who has it? I hope it doesn't get lost in the shuffle. And Sacred II may not have the rep. of Diablo, but it's still a good game and it has co-op! All the best to Gaming Minds.

I'm really enjoying Sacred 2 right now and its a shame to find the dev team had already gone bankrupt. Wish the guys all the best in their new company. I've heard of most of those games, but never got round to playing them.

Thank god for Europe, only part of the world still making PC games the old fashioned way - REAL rpg's (The Witcher, Two Worlds), REAL hack'n'slash rpg games (Sacred 1 and 2 ) and REAL open world shooters (STALKER series) amongst many other original intellectual deep games all coming out of Europe. Compare that with the rush to dumbed down mostly console only games coming out North America and I know which direction I will be looking in for decent original PC games, that sometimes are willing to try something new (Boiling Point) and that's East.

sacred 2 on xbox 360 just wasn't fun enough. A friend and I completed sacred 1 on pc together, and it was a blast. But the damn camera in Sacred 2 was horrible. They should make a 3rd person over the shoulder camera and add some variety. It was ok, but nothing great. If the second person wants to check what they picked up it was like a 5-10 minute pause every 5 minutes. It got really annoying.

Hope they continue to make sacred a sacred 3 would be awesome..Sacred 2 is a fun game..They should try an make a darkstar 2..Not to many people are involved in a good space game any more..Its not a dead genre, its just a genre that hasnt had a good release in a long time..Darkstar one was a fun decent game..

Sounds good to me. I liked what they did with Sacred/2, and with some updated graphics and interface they could go far with new IPs.
