Ex-Rare devs create Starfire Studios

Four former staff members from the Kinect Sports maker have formed their own development studio; first title to be published on Xbox Live Arcade.

In February this year, Microsoft Studios subsidiary Rare was hit with a spate of staff layoffs, despite the good performance of the studio's previous title, Kinect Sports.

Fusion: Genesis is coming to XBLA.

Four ex-Rare developers have now teamed up to create Starfire Studios. The team consists of programmer Mark Edmonds, designer Chris Tilston, and artists Ross Bury and Phil Dunne, who have collectively previously worked on the Killer Instinct franchise, the Perfect Dark franchise, and the Halo franchise.

The team, based in Leicestershire, UK, is already working on its first offering, a twin-stick space shooter with massively multiplayer online elements, titled Fusion: Genesis.

The game, which features a single-player component, as well as co-op missions and PVP, will put players in control of a lone spaceship that must join a faction to survive. There are six storylines in total and more than one hundred single-player and co-op missions that include escorting imperial convoys, defending home bases from invading fleets, infiltrating enemy lines, or mining for rare minerals.

Fusion: Genesis will be released on Xbox Live Arcade.

So how many members of Rare were part of it back in the good 'ole days of Banjo Kazooie? If most of the employees did not even partake in the N64 days, is it still the studio we love?

Rare died when it left Nintendo imo. Kameo and Viva Pinata are decent, Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts.. well

Rare didn't leave Nintendo, Nintendo and the 2 guys who founded Rare sold their shares to Microsoft. Reading awhile back Activision almost got Rare which would have been bad they sure as hell wouldnt be around today

Such a shame that Microsoft got their hands on Rare, because with Nintendo they were able to have that platform to boost their games to a much higher level of popularity and fame. Nintendo is one brand name that you always pay attention to when it came to gaming, although the fact that Microsoft is one of the large software corporations ever is good, because if they say the word then Rare can go crazy and there won't be a dent in their wallet.

They should go and convince Rare to get their crap together again...

I had a lot of respect for Rare in the days of Banjo-Kazooie. The series possessed a great deal of charm and wit. The sequel's environments may not have been quite as memorable as in the first, but they were nonetheless very well developed. Banjo-Tooie's gameplay also demonstrated a large capacity for improvement, both in brand-new additions (the abundance of new moves made the original game's arsenal look primitive by comparison) and revisions to existing concepts (e.g., condensing notes and other pickups into convenient bundles). I haven't heard much about Rare lately, and I take that to mean they haven't developed much worth hearing about. It really is a shame. Whatever the case, I must say that 'Starfire Studios' is a compelling name. Let's hope their games will be just as inspired.

@mtait01 Probably because those games were made by pre-microsoft Rare... essentially a completely different company. After Rare parted from Nintendo, the developer was essentially gutted of all quality, and it has since produced no noteworthy games. Shame too, because Rare used to be the absolute best developer in the industry.

I think they left so they can go back to their "glory days" and make games like 007 again.

Rare... a name so beloved 10 years ago. They made so many good games for the N64 and the humour they packed into their games was unlike any other game at the time. Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, Killer Instinct, Perfect Dark and of course Goldeneye 007. As soon as they left Nintendo everything went downhill. I was watching a trailer for Kinect Sports Season 2 today at EB Games and I just shook my head and said: I am disappoint.

Rare only recognized for Kinetic? Is this really the same Rare studios? All those awesome games from before and they only recognize the crap called Kinect? God help us all. That's like recognizing ID for Rage only and ignoring the stuff they had before... Pathetic.

Best of luck to these guys. Rare made some great games through the years. I hope they can keep that trend going at Starfire.

@Richardthe3rd Rare could make KI for the 360. When they split for Nintendo, Nintendo kept the Kongs and Rare kept all the other IP that they made. That is why you saw Perfect Dark and Banjo & Kazooie on the 360.

Will we ever see the glory days again? Solar jetman..Battletoads..Killer instinct? And not Kinect sports?

Here's hoping it will be a return of some creative and fun games, we're definitely in dire need of such creative ideas these days.

Something else to avoid touching with a ten meter cattle prod?? At this point I think it's safe to say anyone or anything coming from Rare isn't worth the time of day.....

Looks like an interesting offer to say the least. Now speaking of Rare, when will they cut the crap and make a new Conker game like Bad Fur day!? That game was awesome!

Rare games used to be first-day purchases; it's sad how their fortunes have fallen. Of course, when you see their X-Box output (Perfect Dark Zero, Grabbed By The Ghoulies, etc.), it seems many of their wounds were self-inflicted. Once the 'collectathon' platformer lost its luster, Rare seemed to perish along with it.

Sadly, Microsoft still has rights to all of the Rare franchises. Conker would be the easiest to buy though. Make it happen Starfire!

YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rare are my favorite studios ever! Why does this story say 'the kinect sports makers'... what? How about the Goldeneye 007, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong developers? Come on!

Man, I still remember back in the day at 11/12 whatever when I was pissed that Nintendo let Rare go. Now Microsoft just screwed them over.

I will always remember Rare as the creators of 007 Goldeneye, Banjo-Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day. Anywho, with a background like those four's, this new studio should be one to watch out for.

No doubt, Killer Instinct game would rock. Even if it was just a compilation of 1,2 and gold I'd buy it. Sequel would be even better :)

Rare has been crap since they left Nintendo. I'd love them again if they made a new Battletoads. :)

Rare is one of those frustrating companies that's associated with a really cool IP library they'll probably never be able to use. Pretty sure Nintendo will never let them release KI on the 360. I still curse the day they sold Rare.

Vickman178

Rare also made Star Fox Adventures for the gamecube which was pretty good, and I think that was there last game for Nintendo after they went to microsoft....and now unfortunately they aren't as good as they use to be....

Grimbear13

Is it just me or did Rare's product quality plummet after leaving Nintendo exclusivity? Also I agree with all the comments KI3 I was unaware they made Battletoads why aren't there more? Wasn't a big fan of Perfect Dark, but was a big fan of Goldeneye. DK64 was solid, the DK Country games 1 and 2 were excellent. I'm not sure what they've made since they left I heard the new Perfect Dark was a flop and don't know any other high profile games they've made.

hope the people that once worked at Rare decide to release Killer Instinct 1 & 2 on xbox live as well as make killer instinct 3. getting tired of waiting lol. Also a new Battletoads game would be nice as well.

@Poodger Note they did not mention the original Goldeneye. In order for them to truly be from the N64 period of game development that particular title would have to be mentioned as part of their work.

"who have collectively previously worked on the Killer Instinct franchise, the Perfect Dark franchise, and the Halo franchise." Yes But what happened to the RARE devs who made BattleToads? and why hasn't there been an XBLA release of Battletoads: the arcade game?

Its so sad to see Rare, who once created Goldeneye and Donkey Kong Country. Reduced to creating games like Kinect Sports etc. Hope the new studio can re-capture that old Rare magic

I want to know how far back these guys were with Rare. If they are from the glory days of the N64, then this might go good. If they entered Rare after the Microsoft acquisition, I have little hope for any quality games.
