Every PlayStation 4 comes bundled with The Playroom

Augmented-reality application The Playroom will come pre-loaded on all PlayStation 4 consoles.

Every PlayStation 4 console will come bundled with a pre-loaded copy of The Playroom, Sony has announced.

The Playroom, which was seen during Sony's E3 2013 press conference, is an augmented-reality game that combines the DualShock 4 controller with the PlayStation 4 Camera to interact with a fleet of on-screen robots. The application is also compatible with smartphones, tablets, and the PS Vita.

The app is designed to show off many of the DualShock 4's new features, such as the light bar, touchpad, dual motors, and speaker. These can also be used in The Playroom to play AR mini-games, such as Air Hockey.

While The Playroom comes bundled with the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 4 Camera does not.

The PlayStation 4 will be released later this year for $399.

Oh come  on now guys. You cry outrage when anyone else puts something that isn't needed on a system. You guys are fine just ignoring this?

Thank you Sony! You have answered our prayers for more motion games :P

Bundle the game but not the gadget to play it with. *facepalm* But well, for me I guess that's a good thing, since that drops the price and I don't like this kind of stuff anyway.

Interesting, but not interesting enough to get me to buy the camera. I need to see more games using it well.

The sixaxis was pretty cool imo but only a few games used it, it was especially very nicely used in Folklore.

There was also the screen cap feature which Tekken 6 and SC5 were the only games in my collection that used it.

Sony drops the camera as a bundled item, to beat MS in the price of their console at launch... and bundle this crap to entice gamers to buy their camera?  No thanks.  First thing I delete when I start the console.

Who cares?! It doesn't come with the camera to play it! I'm not buying a camera for a tech demo either! If the PS4 came bundled with the camera, then I would definitely try out the AR goodness, What is Sony thinking here? This will not sell the camera.

If it doesn't come with the PS Eye 2, then why are they wasting my HDD space?

Sony really knows the gamer's well. MS should learn something from the.

I think Sony had intended on shipping with the eye in box but back tracked at last moment after people freaked at Microsoft kinect and price tag. Obviously the system was built with ps eye integration in mind.

I mean the damn controller has a bright ass night light on the top to communicate with the ps eye. Preloaded eye software is further proof.

I wonder if they are gonna change the name as well after the paranoia outburst online. I mean the ps "EYE". Eye of Sonyauman

tajirinere

I honestly think MS need to cut the price of the Xbox One to  $450, its inferior and even though we'd all love it in the future, Kinect 2.0 is not necessary and it ain't new tech.

DeathwachMarine

That's cool. I don't get why this is such a big deal, if you want an eye, buy one, if you're not interested in the free minigames don't buy one, its so simple. Personally, i'm fine without the extra cost of the camera forced on me. I'm interested in getting the eye in the future, but at launch i'd rather use that money for an extra game.

Glasscut32

People argue that the kinect games sold.. Yes they sold because after the developer made the game.. THEN people went out and bought the Kinect.. Sheesh how hard is that to understand..

I see a kinect game on the shelf its a popular game.. Oh my Xbox 360 does not have a kinect what do i do i go buy the Kinect and buy the game.. = i joined the other 20 million people that bought the game..

Okay so Sony did not bundle the PS Eye 2 big deal.. Same above rules applied mission accomplished..

PS Eye sold + Game with PS Eye requirment sold..

How is this formula hard to understand ??? seriously.. you guys are really making a big deal out of $60 piece of hardware..

Yes people are very confused and misguided..

XBOTS, while you complain about PS4 not forcing players to purchase PS EYE, have fun with your XBOX ONE that comes minus headset, minus the ability to change HD's, plus TV.

BTW, more sites are reporting rumors of RROD 2.0.  It's coming...

victorcom

Sony should have bundled PS eye mandatorily, developers would have taken advantage of it and created lot of games like Kinect adventure. Now it depends on eye sale.

ominous_prime
ominous_prime

@twztid13 They should have just made it a free download if you purchase the camera for PS4, right?!

ominous_prime
ominous_prime

@JasonBroady This is a boneheaded idea to try and sell the camera. I would've actually preferred that they bundled the camera as it wouldn't then be looked at as an add on that some gamers may have by developers and publishers. Support on this camera is going to be short in supply unless Sony 1st party creates a bundle that is for the camera and a must have game that uses it. Until that happens, this AR demo is staying on the HDD, and I'll have no camera to try it with. The only thing to learn here is this is a mistake to try and cut pricing.

Shantmaster_K
Shantmaster_K

@tajirinere $499 isn't that much really. The PS4 was going to be the same price, until they took out the Eye. The Hardware isn't that much inferior really. Plus the PS3 had better specs than the Xbox 360, but there really wasn't any difference.

ominous_prime
ominous_prime

@Glasscut32 Not the same thing. Those that went out to get a move saw that developers were not supporting it. The same will happen here, mainly because core fans of Sony didn't support the move. Those same fans will not buy the PS4 camera. Those that did buy Kinect and enjoyed it, and buying an XBOX One to continue on what they know has support. This time they won't even have to buy it separately is how the average consumer will see it.

victorcom
victorcom

@Glasscut32 Yes if they make more appealing games. People will start to realize its importance and buy it. But to make good games, the developer will first analyze the consumer base, So in the fear of losing money they won't take risks. So ps eye need to sell well to make good games.

Mudo7

@Glasscut32 Confused, ignorant, misguided = fanboyism, is the STD of consumers.

ominous_prime

@epicgameresearc PS4 comes with a cheap ear piece that goes with a smartphone you can buy at Walmart for $9.99. I would have rather had the PS4 camera instead of that cheap ear piece. Not only that, I already have a headset to use because Sony didn't move technology forward enough to require new headsets that use different technology. So I have a headset already. I don't have a PS4 camera for gaming.

gilldominic
gilldominic

@victorcom I would have liked to see just that.

They could have still undercut the Xbox One by going for the $350 price mark and then had a single, continuous hardware ecosystem for developers.

I'm hoping as many PS4 adopters as possible get a camera too, so it has a chance to survive and prosper.

JoeGamer1234
JoeGamer1234

@ominous_prime @Glasscut32 What are rambling on about? Motion control gaming has not caught on. This is one reason that Nintendo transitioned over to a tablet based controller. The other companies took a stab at motion controlled gaming and The Kinect was the only one that had any sort of impact because it didn't require a controller in hand at all times to use. That was the future of motion controlled gaming, but despite this it's still not been widely adopted by the consumer. Kinect 2.0 is being forcefully integrated with the console in hopes to reach out to a broader audience. Like it or not we're headed into a controller-less era of gaming along with digital distribution and always connected, big brother era in history. Not just in gamine, but it'll certainly help usher in this invasive generation.

gilldominic
gilldominic

@victorcom @Glasscut32 Indeed, it's a chicken and egg scenario, the two things become so co-dependent on the other improving to be the impetus for the overall product. It makes it much more of a gamble, especially early in the life cycle.

100% adoption would have solved that and the PS4 could have STILL been cheaper than Xbox One.

victorcom
victorcom

@gilldominic  @victorcom If Sony eye sells more than 20 million, than we will see a lot of games developed for it.

Glasscut32
Glasscut32

@gilldominic @victorcom If the developer does not make the game the camera is not required.. period..

Your argument really has no merit about sony not bundling it.. So what if they do and the dev's don't make the game then what ?? See what i mean it's not even up to sony it's up to the

DEVELOPERS NO GAME NO CAMERA .

ominous_prime
ominous_prime

@swantn5 @ominous_prime @JasonBroady Because Sony has yet sent a message to developers that this device is not important enough for all gamers that choose the PS4 to have. I bought the last two cameras and there was nothing really there to play. It shows a lack of support and confidence to try and under cut pricing with XBOX One. What Sony doesn't seem to understand is that there are more people that are polarized towards XBOX One or PS4. There are few that are sitting the fence and fewer that will buy both. I fall into the latter that will buy both.If they included the camera and had their console as $449.99, it would still be competitively priced.

Shantmaster_K
Shantmaster_K

@tajirinere @Shantmaster_K By the time you buy the Eye and Move (if you were to get) you'd be spending more than the Xbox One bundle anyway. Although, you don't need the Eye and Move to play like you do with the Kinect.

ominous_prime
ominous_prime

@tajirinere @Shantmaster_K It's cheaper now. When it was going to be included, Sony was planning to charge $499. The Kinect that's sold right now when on sale at retail is usually $99. Regular MSRP is $129.99, and comes with a game. There's no way that Microsoft will sell the advanced features of the Kinect 2.0 for roughly $50.00. Sony can do that because a lot of the tech is built into the Dual Shock 4 to function as a Move controller light. Kinect has all of it's features included within one device.

vannacut

@sammoth @tajirinere @Shantmaster_K over 500 dollar xbox? yes it was a much better deal considering it had hdmi, bigger hardrive better hardware (devs could use it or not it was more powerful)and a blue ray drive which later could play 3d movies....

obsequies
obsequies

@sammoth @obsequies @tajirinere @Shantmaster_K if you don't want to accept that your wrong I can accept that. The last gen was clearly the last muscle car gen. The ps3 was a powerhouse compared to the jump that this gen is going with. Everythings budget consoles now.

sammoth
sammoth

@obsequies @sammoth @tajirinere @Shantmaster_K Not even PC parts go up in time esp when first released. The go down quicker than console simply because they are released more frequently UNLIKE cars. Again your analogy is flawed. Point was the cost was up higher back then when people where making less money. The Xbox One costs the same as the PS3 beck then.

obsequies
obsequies

@sammoth @obsequies @tajirinere @Shantmaster_K I wasn't talking about the economy at all I was comparing when cars turned from muscle cars to econy friendly cars that saved gas. when the corvette went from a stingray to a pos. And yes my analogy is one of the best you will find. Hardware is slowing down, pc is becoming even more of the gaming machine and gimicks replace horsepower

obsequies
obsequies

@sammoth @tajirinere @Shantmaster_K consoles were more powerful in that era. Thats the muscle car era. Now we're in that crappy pre 90s econo car part of history for consoles. Consoles back then actually had something over pcs thats why they cost that much. The ps1 and 2 cost the same so the ps3 was actually cheaper when comparing to early 90s pricing of the 1

ominous_prime

@JoeGamer1234 @ominous_prime @Glasscut32 How many camera add ons has Sony released along with their Playstation consoles? 3 if you include the upcoming PS4. How many games use the camera over the course of a decade: 26 required Eye Toy with PS2, 3 required PSEye, 18 required PS Move. This is what was meant by Sony not supporting their products. Games that required Kinect are well over 120 games in less than 3 years. Nintendo had a console that had motion controls, but they didn't leave it behind on the Wii U. There are some games that still use it. The focus was to bring a combination of that to the newer consoles like the Wii U and XBOX One. Sony seems like they had that intent, too. But in an effort to cut costs to make certain then could offer a lower price by selling it separately, it only guarantees fee titles that will use the camera for PS4. All other consoles will benefit from what's included in the box with that initial console purchase. Kinect 2.0 has already been recognized by game journalists as a great improvement in functionality, but you'll notice that it's mainly being used to enhance that gaming experience. I won't be buying the PS4 camera as I bought the last two camera and Sony did very little. With the few titles that required Sony's camera, the majority were 3rd party titles that few people bought.

@victorcom @gilldominic Yeah, I saw that they've had to release stock they'd originally planned to build up in reserve.

I imagine they're scrambling to increase production capacity as we speak.

Would be interested to see some number about what they expect to sell though.

@gilldominic @victorcom PS4 sales are more than what Sony themselves have expected. But PS eye sales, I don't know.

gilldominic

@victorcom I think it will be a while to hit 20 million. I'm not sure what Sony is expecting in year one sales of the PS4 to be fair. And who knows how many will be with camera.

Does anyone know of any predictions on how the consoles will sell?

I agree they need to have lots of potential consumers for developers to be enticed.

@Glasscut32 @gilldominic @Mudo7 Haha! You complained that MS weren't producing VCRs in 1987!?

How else do you expect someone react to such an odd line of debate!?

It's like moaning about Sony not producing an office productivity suite in 1997.

WHY SONY!? WHY DIDN'T YOU PRODUCE A SPREADSHEET APPLICATION FOR ME!?

@gilldominic @Mudo7 Your a moron.. Funny how you guy's take an example and beat it to death.. Pathetic..

@Glasscut32 @gilldominic @Mudo7 @victorcom I have no idea what your point is.

Are you angry that Microsoft never produced a VCR for you in 1987? Why on Earth would you be angry at MS for not making you a VCR 26 years ago?

You're free to irrationally hate whatever you want to irrationally hate, but don't expect me to agree with you. Personally I like to form balanced and thought out opinions about things.... ;)

@gilldominic @Mudo7 @victorcom All this talk sounds like a lazy gamers talk to me.. I for one i am not lazy once again i despise gesture gaming.. and despise microsoft products in general..

@Mudo7 @victorcom Would be interesting to see a Total War type of game if you could command it from your armchair with voice and motion assist.

Might mitigate the limitation of the controller for strategy based games as an issue.

However strategy often wants to give you lots of info on the screen at once too, and people tend to be further away from the screen with console gaming, I suppose that presents an issue in presentation also.

Mudo7
Mudo7

@victorcom @Mudo7 Personally, I would like to see Stretagy on console and given to Kinect and Eye.

Glasscut32
Glasscut32

@gilldominic @Mudo7 @victorcom Well i ask you one question did the Xbox 360 have  kinect requirement ?? the answer is NO.. yet the game sold 20 million right ??..

I rest my case..

victorcom

@Mudo7 If they have shown some good games to go with eye or Kinect, then people would have accepted it. Also combining PS4 controller and PS eye can be used for puzzle solving in the game, it will be great.

gilldominic
gilldominic

@Mudo7 @gilldominic @victorcom  There will be much more limited interest in Eye functionality if adoption rates are low. Yes. Developers have to look at their potential consumer base when making decisions on how and where to spend their time innovating....

The majority didn't want an iPhone until the iPhone came along. It's an extreme example, but I prefer to be optimistic about new products and innovations, just like the Eye and Kinect.

Mudo7
Mudo7

@gilldominic @victorcom @Glasscut32 And by your logic, if it doesn't come with another product that means game developers won't create anything for it? ...

...Seriously?

It really isn't wanted by a majority, that is why. It does not appeal to a majority on the mainstream market, it is why it was limited to begin with. -_-

gilldominic
gilldominic

@victorcom @Glasscut32 Don't pay attention to him, he doesn't seem to understand how game development works.

By his logic Nintendo should have removed those silly motion control features from the Wii because no developers had made a game for such features yet. ;)

victorcom
victorcom

@Glasscut32 Kinect adventures game alone sold over 20 million copies. Do you think developers won't make a game like it?
