Evangelion rhythm game in the works

Grasshopper Manufacture set to make rhythm-action PSP title based on Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Just days away from the release of the highly anticipated psychological action thriller Shadows of the Damned, Grasshopper Manufacture head Goichi Suda (Suda 51) has already revealed his next project.

Never let it be said Grasshopper Manufacture makes ordinary games.

According to Japanese gaming news site Andria Sang, the recently announced Rebuild of Evangelion Sound Impact will be a PSP rhythm action title based on the famed Japanese anime and manga serial-turned-franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion. The game will allow players to play six different types of rhythm-based games, mixing music and visuals of familiar Evangelion music, with over 30 tracks in all. The game itself will be based on the Rebuild of the Evangelion film series, first released in 2007.

Rebuild of Evangelion Sound Impact is being produced by Kei Hirono from Namco Bandai and directed by Kazutoshi Ida (Aquanauts Holiday, Kyojin no Doshin), with Suda 51 serving as creative producer. The soundtrack will be made by legendary Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka.

Rebuild of Evangelion Sound Impact is due for release on the PSP on September 29 in Japan and will come in three editions: game only; a soundtrack edition that will include the game, plus a soundtrack and a special sleeve case; and third edition, which will include all of the above plus a T-shirt and headphones.

As reported by Andria Sang, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has revealed screenshots from the new title, which detail some of the gameplay. Namco Bandai has also opened an official site for the new game.

This will never be released to the West. I would kill for an Eva game and would buy this without ever looking at a review...but it will never be released in the West.

I see I'm not alone in thinking this is bizarre.

Rhythm game??? Why not a "weird robots fighting each other" game?

I'd rather see a real NGE game on a console.

That sounds as bizarre as Evangelion itself.

Gainax and rhythm games...420th Impact sounds like a better sub-title. There, it has been said.

@DanielL5583 I've played a couple Shin Megami Tensei games and I had fun. But those games were RPGs not rhythm games and they both had stories created for the games. The problem with anime is that most stories are not suited for the interactive storytelling videogames provide. Would you play a Monster game or a 5 Centimeters Per Second game?

Well this ain't any more confusing than The End of Evangelion was, so I'm all up for it.

@isaacmj Clearly you haven't seen the Shin Megami Tensei series.

HUH? I love Suda 51 but this is weird even by his standards, if it's as good as Samurai Champloo Sidetracked then I'll love this.

I love Evangelion... but a rhythm game? Hmm... I'll wait and see how things end.

Why is Suda 51 wasting his time in this? I love Evangelion but it should stay as an anime. Most anime based games suck (as much as movie based games).

@BK-Sleeper The preview trailer was designed to minc one of the preview clips they show at the end of a Evangelion episode/film.

The opening titles of the original Evangelion were possibly one of the finest examples of timing images to music and teaser text that I've ever seen- I literally bought the series just on the strength of seeing them. Even though music's maybe not the theme in Eva that it is in, say, Macross, this has the potential to be a good fit. Must admit an EU release feels a tad unlikely, though.

This sounds like a cash-in to me, but it also sounds like it has the talent behind it to be really good.
