March 8 is International Women's Day, and Paradox Development Studio is marking the occasion with a free update to its grand strategy game Europa Universalis IV.

The free update adds 100 great women of history to the game. Each character can be generated through events like a weak regency, a colonial empire, and certain ideas. Players will choose if they want these historical figures to join their courts as advisors, or make them rulers and leaders.

"It's no surprise that the role of women in history isn't as well known as that of men,” the head of Paradox Development Studio Thomas Johansson said in a statement. “Europa Universalis, admittedly, hasn't done a lot to foreground their contributions. We thought that International Women's Day was the best time to do a little bit to help balance the scales and introduce our audience to some very interesting people."

Some famous women in the update include Queen Catherine II the Great, Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba, Nanyehi, and Roxelana.

The Women’s History DLC will be available on March 8 to all players. The full changelog is available on the game's forum.
