Euro VC Links to the Past

Two more titles up for download on the Wii in Europe--including another Zelda game.

by

Nintendo has announced the latest lineup for the Wii's Virtual Console, and this week Europeans are treated to another Zelda adventure--The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the third game in the popular series.

Originally released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, it introduced to the role-playing game series such elements as multilevel dungeons and the hookshot. The game's producer is the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto.

The second title up for grabs today is the original Castlevania from Konami, which was first released in 1986 on the NES. The platform game was loosely based on Bram Stoker's Dracula and was one of the first horror games to be released.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past costs 800 Wii Points (approx £6), and Castlevania weighs in at 500 (approx £3.75).

That game was nice when it came out on the SNES, it introduced the pieces of heart, added the first item menu that didn't have selectable items but that were always equiped (like the Pegasus Boots or the Titan's Mits), had some great music and lots of puzzles. You could venture the world and decide what you did and didn't do, talk to people, play games in the village, etc. Also, it was the first game in which Link had pink hair, LOL... :D

Awesome! Link to the Past is great! For only it's only 6 euros. This is one of those rare times the people in Europe get games before the people in the US. Which is a good thing, it would suck to have to wait sometimes months just for a game to come out in Europe that's been out in the US for a long time.

yes, Simon's Quest was the black sheep of the Castlevania family, but I loved it. It was more RPG than standard platformer. Back in the day when I first got it, I didnt much care for it. I was expecting another platformer a la the first one, but once I figured out that it was an RPG, I fell in love with it. It's interesting that the sequels (at least the "part 2s") of old franchises were so different from the originals. Take Zelda 2's side scrolling, Super Mario 2's (US version) pick-up-and-throw game play, and Castlevania 2's RPG elements. You rarely (if indeed ever) see that kind of drastic game play changes in today's games. Its kinda sad really.

Don't miss out on Castlevania: Simon's Quest if it comes here. Seriously. That was a classic game, and about the only fault I can find with it is that the last battle with you-know-who was unbelievably melodramatic and dull compared to the quality of the rest of the game. Simon's Quest pioneered the "night and day" factor being modeled in a video game. (The monsters were tougher at night) and the game had tons of action/rpg elements and upgrades. Its not the best in the series. .(IMHO, Castlevania III, Dracula's Curse holds that title) but its a worthy purchase if it ever comes here. (Much moreso than about 90% of the stuff on Virtual Console. Don't believe the geek.

They are actually wrong! Castlevania for the NES didn't come out until May of 1987, and the MSX and Famicom versions came out in 1986. Anyways, I hope that they can release those games on the Virtual Console here in the States!

I can't tell which one you are talking about here. There was never a "Simon's Curse". There were only Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, and Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. But I'll assume, given how people generally feel about the title, that it was Castlevania 2 you were referring to. My advice in this case is not to listen to the Videogame Nerd. He doesn't know what he's talking about, at least in this case. As the bigger nerd between us, I can attest that while it is very different from other Castlevania games, it is a great game in its own unique way.

A wonderful game. Anyone that badmouths ALTTP either hasn't played it, or is generally a Nintendo/Zelda hater. For its time, it was a wonderful game. Personally, one of my favourite SNES games of all time. And in the very least, my favourite Zelda game. But then, I'm not a big fan of the 3-D Zelda games.
