EU Super Paper Mario problem unfolds

Some European gamers may experience an error where the game freezes; Nintendo set to offer replacement discs.

Nintendo Europe has announced that some European owners of Super Paper Mario, recently released in the region for the Wii, may experience a gameplay glitch that causes the game to freeze. The company has issued a statement on its Web site detailing the issue, which it says "is so specific" that some gamers "may not experience any issues at all." Only UK English, German, and Spanish games are affected.

According to the statement from Nintendo, the potential problem arises at the beginning of Chapter 2-2 after the player comes across a character called Mimi. A key is required to open a door in a room on the first floor, and if the player simply picks up the key and opens the door to Mimi's right, the game should run smoothly. However, Nintendo says, "if you talk to Mimi without picking up the key, the game will freeze. You will then have to turn off your Wii console and start again from your last save point."

The company apologised and stated that no damage will be done to the Wii console or the game if it freezes, but it will be setting up a replacement procedure for anyone whose disc does have the issue. Details will be posted on the Nintendo Europe Web site "shortly."

I'm from the Netherlands, and I had the glitch as well. In Europe we get one disc version of the game which contains the English, German, French and Spanish languages, so all these disks probably have the problem. If you know the glitch it's no problem, but if you don't check up on these things on the internet, I can see how you'd have a problem.....

I played the Aussie version of 2-2 this morning, and I consciously went to get the key first. Played through without a problem. It's not a huge level, so having to start from the beginning of the level isn't a huge problem either. Kudos to Nintendo for making the exact problem clear early on. At least it isn't like the crippling Twilight Princess glitch!

just go pick the key and everything will be fine.. if it freezes you just don't do the same thing again.. it's not like you're going to do a lot of things, it's at the beginning of the chapter

No reason to be mad at Nintendo, they're cool about it and doesn't charge 5000 dollars to replace it like some companies. Stuff like this rarely happens to Nintendo.

Funny how people get upset about this issue with a Nintendo game. Glitches happen, anyone that is a pc gamer knows this very well.

Wouldn't this problem be entirely fixed if Nintendo actually offered patches/updates for games? Too bad they're not the best when it comes to online capabilities

You know... Surfing on the coast of Cinnabar or Seaform in the original Japanese Green version doesn't trigger wild Pokemon encounters. So the most well-known means of finding Missingno won't work. :D

Not a big deal though I'm curious what kind of mechanism Nintendo will use to rectify the situation. I've never heard of them patching a game before...

how come gamers are that angry about it? From what iv'e heard, if you flip to 3-D and just walk past mimi at that moment, you wont have to talk to her and you can move on, thus the glitch being avoided. seriously, it's not that big of a deal.

Why is the US version not having the same problem? There the same games right?? but with different region coding?

I feel for them. :( I would say N should start a system where the Wii holds patches for game errors, & such. But at the same time, I also say that a game is 50$ a pop, & for that price should have little, to no glitches at all. And Nintendo would start releasing games so fast, that glitches would appear in games too much. The Wii memory would be eatin up, by ridiculous amounts of patches, sans Windows XP. I understand Nothing is perfect, but games shouldn't be riddled with glitches. :)

I might play through it again to SEE the bug..... honestly, with the way the game flows, I wouldn't have been aware of it it unless this was reported. Could be far worse, Bioshock had issues on both platforms, certain consoles have been dying outright, and a certain high-tech company has had masses of problems with it's previous hardware (and copy protection technology!) At least they are making it known, and have arranged a solution and replacement procedure.

well at least nintendo is willing to do something about it and replace everything

I'm glad it's not a known problem in the Netherlands Funny, how imported games, how easy it sounds ,can mess a game up.

Man I feel bad for European gamers. Paper Mario is such a forgone experience for me and they are just now getting it. I really don't see why consoles can't be region free when it comes to playing games. Then again I know nothing about the economic problems that that could create. Still that sucks.

Too bad players can't just download a patch for it.

"Only UK English, German, and Spanish games are affected" This is not true, I am reviewing a copy for the Swedish market and I experienced the exact same issue. I do think this problem exists in all PAL-copies.

It's nice of Nintendo to make this offer for such a minor bug, but no downloadable patch for this game is just shameful. I love your games, Nintendo, but you need to get it together. This is 2007.

Nintendo of Europe are a friggin joke. It took 4 months for this game to come out here and now this? Datel better hurry up with the freeloader, ican't believe we are forced to wait 4 months for this ****. Stupid Nintendo. MS release all their games same time or 1 week difference.

This is why I think the Wii needs more HDD space, or an HDD attachment with lots and lots of space, so patches for the games can be downloaded.

This game was a big reason for me selling my wii, After playing zelda and buying several other poor games my wii had not been turned on in a few months, so after watching a gamespot preview of spm i thought i'd pre-order the game and to my dismay the game would not be released untill september 2007, september, thats around half a year after the original launch in u.s and japan, localision like that is just completly unacceptable, that ment i had no reason to turn on my wii for another 6 months or so. When i got offered £300 for my nintendo wii i couldnt refuse it someone was willing to pay me the excat amount of money i had spent on my wii + games. The only reason i saw to hang onto my wii was super mario galazy there was not another game that was announced i wanted, and my sister who lives about 10 mins away from me has a wii she never uses so i will just buy galaxy and borrow hers. The super paper mario delay was the final nail in the coffin for me needing to own a wii.

Surely, this is what Mimi is talking about when she says you better not go in any other room beside the furthest room on the first floor, or something bad will happen. What else would she do? Threaten to erase your game file like Bottles in Banjo-Kazooie? It just seems everybody's getting all worried and confused about something that makes sense. She warned you, and you didn't listen! And now she gon' stun your game! TAKE THAT, YOU IGNORANT PLAYER, YOU! >=D

I'm disappointed, Nintendo should start using the patch system that they claimed to have for bugs like this. My guess is they don't have a real patch system, just something you CAN implement if you wanted to. Nintendo needs to reevaluate their online strategy because this generation that's the one area that they suck at.

This is a pretty big issue, having a specific fault in any number of games that makes functionality questionable. I'm glad to see Nintendo taking responsibility and acting on it right away.
