Escape From Mount Stupid - Starcraft

Escape From Mount Stupid returns for a third season. This week, Danny takes a look at Starcraft and its influence on the wider world of pro gaming.

Starcraft was one of those games I watched from afar for many years. A good friend of mine was crazy about it, but to those unfamiliar with the genre, Starcraft can be an intimidating game to get into--especially when your mate is enthusiastically gushing about complex tactics, strategy, and build orders.

When Starcraft II came out, I saw it as a way into the genre. I bought it on launch day and played through about half the single-player mode, but I was soon distracted by another new release and never went back.

My relationship with Starcraft could well have ended there, but a few months ago a bunch of us at GameSpot UK made a conscious decision to learn the finer intricacies of the game. Most of us were ignorant of the likes of pro gaming, which has become such an important part of gaming, and Starcraft II seemed to be a good starting point. A few months of playing later, and I can now say that I not only understand Starcraft, but I absolutely love playing it.

Last season we launched with an episode about my favourite game series of all time--Half-Life--so this time around it was nice to get the ball rolling with a game that I've only recently come to love. We've got nine more episodes left in this season, covering some of the most requested topics from last year. Make sure you watch the end of the episode to see what's coming up next week.

Special thanks to Evil Geniuses' Scott Smith for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come in and talk to us. His full interview will be up soon enough. That guy knows his stuff, so I highly recommend you check it out.

So uh when can we see that exclusive scott smith interview you mentioned near the end of your video? Some of us would like to see that. What's the holdup anyway? At least tell us why it wasn't released. :(

Yes, you can hop in on SC2 and barrel through the campaign, but to get anywhere online, you need mentoring, training, and excessive amounts of time. I'm an adult with a 60hr/wk job. There is no way I'm going to get into SC2. D3 is far easier for your mainstream gamer (although it isn't of the same caliber and quality as SC2). SC2 is hardcore like non-other and will spit you out very quickly.

I played a lot of Starcraft 2, just that I played for fun and don't mind losing, but I can't get to the point of obsessing up ladders, when i was 18 I was the Best Starcraft gamer in my town, now I can't keep up anymore..... sad but at least I was good once, :P even though majority of the players are Dota hardcores.

"I AM HERE, CLICK ME!" hahaha =P

Starcraft is just one of those games that I'd prefer to watch someone play than play myself, it's just my opinion.

I was at a old friend's house and he was playing another game that I like to watch instead of play, called EVE online, just chilled out to watch, EVE's more about exploring though.

Metal Gear Solid EFMS!!

HELL YES.

I've never played Starcraft, in fact I was always a C&C guy myself.  Problem is these days there's just farrrrr too much going on now on the screen, I generally have no idea whats happening most of the time..

Red Alert 2 was the peak of RTS to me!  Plus Koreans just scare me..

To be honest, Starcraft 2 is a good game. The only problem is it is just too much stressed on the ladder. Once you are able to get over with worrying about your rank and enjoy the single-player, custom games with friends or the arcade, you will realize that this is a good game. Oh, and MGS next week, this is good.

I've played Starcraft 2 and kind of enjoyed the campaign but I'm not into the masochism that hardcore multiplayer seems to be. IMO Blizzard have forgotten fun and replaced it with depression inducing grind. They've made addictive qualities in a game a dirty term. TBH all their games seem polished but really behind the times these days. Still, I love Danny's videos..the best thing on GS.

Well done video. I feel like he gets better with each video. I think ME3 MP would be my best shot at going pro even though its not that kind of MP.

12 hours of gaming as a job instead of 12 hours of medical directing and paperwork sounds pretty good to me, plus i FKN LOVE GAMES and playing them. So where do i apply :) oh and again GREAT SHOW MORE MORE MORE PLEASE

I played the single player, multiplayer success requires too much practice and I don't have the time.

i have played starcraft 2 and I'm pretty sure it would be easier for me to win an Olympic medal than win a single match of it

I still play Warcraft 3 and the first Starcraft. I will probably play Starcraft 2 when ever all three are available.

yes was waiting for this.  The fact that I care next to nothing about Starcraft and still watched the show speaks volumes of Danny's excellent work

I could care less about Starcraft (no offense meant to those that do), but I really enjoy watching Danny's shows.  Well done, as always, sir.

I do not play SC2, i played SC: BW, (SC2 is a bit dumbed down for me) but still love to watch the pros at major tournaments.

good show. and NASL was great btw. You should do an episode on dota 2 after it releases. dota 1 was even more underground than starcraft1 was. And look how big its become.

"Call of Duty.........insanely popular and the you have a game like Starcraft which isn't a new game but a new version,"

Did the guy actually say that. COD is practically the same each year (which is good) but it seems like a wierd comparison.

Very cool! It was interesting to learn more about E-sports. Although somehow I doubt that people sign on to become  pro gamers with hopes of getting laid, as Scott said :P

ORTS ...sexy ascent you got there *rawr* :P

anyways I don't want to boast but I'm a diamond level SC2 player... I ain't a "pro" cause honestly I play the game for the explosions and fun factor....have not played SC2 for months (waiting for  HoTS) and since I play zerg a lot I'm w8ing for my hydra buff XD

I can see how some people can find the game scary, but its really not a big deal, I have a 40% lose 60% win ratio and to tell you the truth losing DOES teach you to play better, if you find the game to tense to play just play 3v3 or 4v4 team matches, you still need some skill but usually its more forgiving to make mistakes when your with other players. Or you can play some of the great custom maps, or the campaign... they are extremely fun and the achievements are a nice challenge.

and remember when that Hulk rage starts to build when you lose... ITS JUST A GAME :D

@BuzzLiteBeer To be amazing, yes that is the case. That's what makes it a good esports game. But I only play maybe 2 games every couple of days out of the week. You do not need dedicate your life to enjoy the fun of the game. Every time you play you will learn new things about it, sometimes you will get owned, sometimes you won't. Every single time you learn something new about how you could do better. Starcraft emphasizes the joy in improving, it is long lasting, intense, and never dull. Meanwhile other games like D3 emphasize a different type of joy, completing it. It isn't necessarily intensely difficult, it gives you the joy that you finally finished the game. StarCraft isn't about completing the game. Sporting and Story games will always be different.

@subrawk hard to say... i dont think there are many girls who love computer games much less the guy who plays them... but you may never know when a geek girl falls for you for all your gaming goodness
