Epix app hits PlayStation 3

Pay-TV video streaming service now available on Sony home console; PS Plus members get one free movie per month.

by

Premium cable channel Epix is now available through the PlayStation 3, Sony announced today. Members can stream more than 3,000 movies, including The Avengers and The Hunger Games, as well as comedy shows, boxing matches, and concerts.

An Epix app for PlayStation Vita is expected to be available "soon."

The app requires an authentication code from a television provider, meaning users who aren't already a paying Epix subscriber won't be able to access the content.

A free 14-day trial is available.

In addition, Epix will offer one movie per week that PlayStation Plus subscribers ($50 per year) can stream for free, even if they are not an Epix subscriber.

Epix launched for Xbox 360 during December 2011. Apps for the streaming service are also available for Android and iOS devices, as well as Google TV and Roku.

lol, Epix app is a joke, you get 1 new movie a month on cable package too and not too mention  all the movies are on it with a few exceptions are B-rated movies dont waste your money on this movie channel. If I could take it off I would but my cable provider says it would up my bill not lower it, GOD i hate bundled services!!!

I have this amazing new program for my PS3 called "the internet" on it every show or movie you could ever want to watch can be viewed for the low monthly rate of $29.99/mo.  All you have to do is contact your local cable provider!

I dig the free movie per month as a PS+ member...

Is there any advantage of this over Netflix or Hulu Plus?

The idea of needing a cable provider just makes it pointless. All that does is make Netflix and Hulu Plus more attractive. I am not going to pay for a service I don't want just for ONE channel (HBO for example).

get your fact right! is it a movie per week or per month?!

God damn Sony!

I still haven't invested in PS+ but as the weeks roll by it just becomes more and more apparent that I need to :|

A free movie a month on top of all the discounts and free games/content will do me just fine!  Busting my wallet Sony.. Busting my wallet.

Sony did apps right on the PS3. On Xbox 360 you are required to have an XBL Gold subscription to even use the Epix app. It doesn't matter whether or not you already pay for Epix, you still have to pay Microsoft too. You can't even use the trial on Xbox 360 without first paying for XBL Gold. On PS3, you can just use the app with no additional fees to Sony before-hand.

Then to sweeten the deal, they add the "free movie a month" promotion. While this may not be an amazing deal, the fact that there are no requirements to use the app and that there are incentives for also having PS+ is a much more consumer-friendly business model than XBL where every internet related activity is charged a toll.

It's technically not a "free" movie, since people will have already paid for it via the PS subscription. It's cool they're not charging for it AGAIN, I guess, but it's kind of silly to tout free movies and free games as part of a paid subscription service.

Bioshock infinite was way better than tomb raider underworld!

Stupid. When are these content providers going to realize that by restricting this to existing service subscribers they are limiting their customer base severely? There are plenty of people who would be more than willing to pay a nominal monthly fee for access strictly through the PS3 or the website but who are not willing to shell out hundreds of dollars a month for a cable or satellite subscription on top of an Epix subscription. Hasn't the overwhelming success Netflix taught them anything? The public prefers a la carte  options, not the over-priced grouped packages cable and satellite offer. There are no technical or other limitations preventing them from doing this, just short-sightedness and ignorance.

Ok, so, is it per month or per week?

1 free movie a month = the same crappy movies from the 80s and 70s that netflix peddles.

@SoNin360 I just hope that the selection is good.  It would be nice since Netflix's selection is less than great.

@mtnjak Yes, but that's just how it is with most networks apps. HBO Go is another example of a similar service. Though I've heard HBO may be opening independent subscriptions for the app. I'm pretty sure you can only watch a few episodes and/or clips on the Disney channel app too.

This has a lot to do with the relationships between the networks and the cable/satellite providers. They're all having a hard time figuring out how to manage and maintain relationships while also finding ways to tackle and monetize the new delivery methods for entertainment products.

@warhawk-geeby I have had ps+ since it was release and I have not once regret it hell I even believe if you have a ps3 or vita and don't have plus then you are a fool and if do have both and don't have ps+ then you are a HUGE FOOL

@Hvac0120

Except you PS3 users are getting less  out of EPIX than we on the 360 got. When I signed up, I had a month and a half free on the service (whereas you guys just get 2 weeks) and we get the free movie a month as well. Since for both systems a paid membership (PSN+ or Xbox Live Gold) is required to use the free movie a month, that is a wash and no reason to tout the benefits of PSN+.

DarkNeoBahamut
DarkNeoBahamut

@mario1028 We paid for PS+ for games, discounts, cloud and other services (not movie related), so as we don't have to pay an additional cost for the movies, it's like it was for free.

@cogadh

I agree 100%. ESPN (the whole version) on the Xbox requires a key from a service provider that doesn't even offer service in my area - how retarded is that!

@dlCHIEF58 @Hvac0120 It never ceases to amaze me how some people will develop emotional fixations on things they pay money for, even when they are obviously being gouged. If you want to spend your money on XBLGold, go ahead, but don't act like you're getting the deal of the century out of it

shadowhunter0
shadowhunter0

@dlCHIEF58 @Hvac0120 but you can still use EPIX WITHOUT PS+ but you NEED xbl gold to use it on the 360

and with ps+ it is 1 movie per week not 1 per month

Hvac0120
Hvac0120

@dlCHIEF58 The benefit I am referring to has little to do with the free movie a month. It's all about simply being able to use the app on the console.

My arguement can be used for Netflix also. On PS3, users who are already NEtflix subscribers can download and use Netflix without having to pay for PS+ or any other Sony service. Just launch the app and go. On Xbox 360, people are required to pay for XBL or they aren't even allowed to launch the Netflix app.

Bragging about the extra two weeks of free service is silly when people without XBL Gold can't even use that free trial. Whereas every PS3 owner can use the trial as long as they have an internet connection.

DJKrayz_basic
DJKrayz_basic

@dlCHIEF58 @Hvac0120 there are more than a free movie a week that is a benefit to PS+ users... theres free games every week for both PS3 and Vita...   don't be a hater..

cogadh

@dlCHIEF58 Same with Epix. Even if I had a cable subscription (I cut the cord years ago), the only provider in my area does not offer Epix at all, so this new app is completely useless to me and anyone else in my entire region as long as Epix refuses to offer a stand alone subscription option.

dlCHIEF58

@kohle36 @dlCHIEF58 @Hvac0120

LOL, where did you get that drivel - certainly not from my comment. All I stated was the facts which was that the EPIX trial on the 360 was 3 times as long and they get a free movie as well. I never once stated Live was the deal of the century - I am happy with the service but would definitely be happier if it was cheaper or free.

@dlCHIEF58 @DJKrayz_basic @Hvac0120 Social network with ads and movie trials or Game Rentals with discount purchase? I know I will choose. Who pays for online anyways, no other platform does this.

dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@DJKrayz_basic @dlCHIEF58 @Hvac0120

I never said anything hateful or derogatory about PSN+ - but since you went there I cannot see why people are paying for discounts which is what it amounts to. And the "free games" aren't free, they are basically rentals since they become unplayable once your subscription runs out.

I do take issue with Microsoft's Live charges and always thought it was pretty cheap to charge people to play online. Sega started this trend at the end of the Dreamcast cycle. Even so, I can't bring myself to buy a SONY console - hate the controller and many of the exclusives have absolutely no appeal to me. I've been happy with the Live service, but definitely would be happier if there were less or no charge for it.
