Epic Games to acquire APB?

BBC cites development sources as saying Realtime Worlds' sunsetted Unreal Engine-powered shooter may get a second life at the Gears of War studio.

Source: British news service the BBC.

What we heard: Yesterday, Realtime Worlds issued the heavy-hearted statement that its online third-person shooter APB would be shut down, effective last night. The move came after the Scottish studio filed for bankruptcy protection and enacted massive layoffs following "lackluster" sales of the tepidly received title.

APB may soon have a new gang in town.

However, APB's game of cops-and-robbers may not be over just yet. Reporting on the game's demise yesterday, the BBC offered up one additional tidbit, citing a source "close to the development team" as saying that administrators hoped to sell APB, with one potential buyer being Gears of War creator Epic Games. No additional details on Epic Games' connection to APB, which is powered by Unreal Engine 3, were mentioned.

The purchase of APB would be the second win for Realtime Worlds administration firm Begbies Traynor. Earlier this month, the firm confirmed for GameSpot that an unnamed US company had purchased Realtime Worlds' online social-networking and gaming platform, Project MyWorld. However, that acquisition was shrouded in mystery, as "the buyer insisted on total confidentiality, no press release, no disclosure of price paid, or name of buyer," Begbies Traynor said.

Whether or not Epic Games acquires APB--or is the unnamed buyer of Project MyWorld--remains to be determined, but the studio certainly has its development plate heavily loaded. In addition to Gears of War 3, the Cary, North Carolina-based studio has People Can Fly's Bulletstorm in production and Chair Entertainment's first iOS title, Project Sword. Epic, of course, also remains at work on updating its ubiquitous middleware software Unreal Engine 3.

The official story: Epic Games had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on APB or Project MyWorld as of press time.

However, the studio did tell the BBC, "[Epic Games CEO Mark Rein] absolutely loves APB, and everyone here loved what they saw. We've got our hands full of Gears of War 3, Bullet Storm and the recently announced Project Sword. If any talks like that are going on, then they would be confidential."

Bogus or not bogus?: Too little to go on. Thanks to the 12-million-unit franchise sales of Gears of War, Epic certainly has the resources to purchase APB, especially since it could probably land the code at a steal, given Realtime Worlds' position.

I just paid $40.00 for the game. I did get to play one month. I didn't resign up because of the obvious hacks (who played a big role in bringing the game down) and the rating system (which i was adjusting too). Without those two major faults, I'd give the game a 8 out of 10. 1. If the game is brought back out, I hope I don't have to rebuy it. 2. If the game is brought back out and I don't have to rebuy it and they make major changes, I'll glady pay a monthly fee. 3. I feel like i've been suckered having bought a game two months ago and I can't even play.

Well I fianlly got lvl 3 to comment (I joined the day I saw this article). Anyway I have been scaving the web over time to see if EPIC has or will buy APB. It has been a dead end everyday until I found something interesting today http://www.heraldscotland.com/business/corporate-sme/former-realtime-staff-are-still-awaiting-redundancy-payments-1.1058857 Now the article it self is just how RTW employees are waiting to get payed still but I caught this line (haven't finished the whole article, buzy but got this) "There is, meanwhile, speculation that former Realtime creative director Dave Jones, creator of hits such as Crackdown and Grand Theft Auto, is moving to the US. He has been linked with a senior post at North Carolina-based Epic Games, and is known to be a close friend of its chief executive Mark Rein." Could it be since he was given a job at EPIC that APB might come with him? Who knows but this seems good.

If Epic snags APB, I hope to god that they drop the p2p feature on it. That will help the sales so much, not to mention the quality of Epic will surely assist in improving the overall game.

I use to play APB but now that the servers are closed i can't. I was a clan leader and the players where really fun to talk to also was really good especially the customisation! plus if you were one of the small amount of people that read the story line with the different NPCs you would see how interesting it is to operate such a gang. All in all I really like the game and hope that Epic buy it!

There's a promotion going on now with Global Agenda after an open letter from the game's producer lamenting the demise of APB. They invite APB players to buy GA for just $20 bucks, includes unlimited play time/fully unlocked game. Use the promotional code "" to get the 30% discount on Global Agenda.

I'd love to see APB survive long enough to get good and maybe get some console ports for all the PS3 and 360 owners out there.

Honestly APB has lots of potential. If epic can add some huge updates it will be good and bring in people.

This is actually VERY good news. Epic Games will most likely add headshotis and other crazy stuff to it while fixing most of the bugs. Their knowledge of the unreal engine is way better so expect the graphics to get better too. Im looking forward to this fo sure.

@Jaxith, I now they can doe more man, but it would be cool is all I'm saying, I mean, for me, the Lancer is the coolest weapon ever.

Jaxith

@killer690 Dude, Epic Games CAN actually do more than Gears of War... It wouldn't be gangs with Lancers.

if it was ported to A console it would just be like MAG its not that its a True MMO it Only supports 100 Players in a action district at a time so it does make more to be a console game and making it free to play makes more sence but the only thing is that the Major updates and Content would be DLC

@ blakeney - XD! Even if they do make it for money, at least the fans could play a (hopefully) better version of the game they like(d) :3

Epic could mak eit a free to play MMO on the 360, as we already pay a subscription. Then make some things purchasable such as minor upgrades or customisation using MS points.

I'll care about this if it actually happens AND has finally been rereleased. If Epic clean up all the things everyone said was broken in the game, optimise it.. no subscription fees like an INTELLIGENT MMO should be delivered (everyone look at Guild Wars 1&2)... hell they could even make it into the first cross platform MMO... at least cross PC/360... I dunno if the ingame marketplace for custom "things" would make a +PS3 mega MMO possible, but it's pretty damn obvious this would sell really well on consoles. Maybe we'll hear/see something decent in 12 months time, I doubt any sooner than that.

- Dude, think about it, gangs, with a gun, that is also a chainsaw (A.K.A. The Lancer) that'd be…… kind of weird honestly -

The most ideal buyers for it IMO, is Rockstar. They must have serious plans for a GTA mmorpg/mmo. I dont mean they buy to use the code, just to use the "ideas" and the licences/patents in the customisation part.

blakeney

@Oozyrat If they remake it for anything it will be money...... No-one will pick it up and re-develope it "for the fans"....maby the carebear crew?:P

With time spent on APB from a GOOD studio, it could be great. But one thing they REALLY cannot afford not to do, is inject a life into the city, and the whole game!

I could just imagine.... suddenly Marcus, Dom and the rest comes driving down the streets in that tank thingie...... that would be awesome!!!

this could be great....yes make it free because they would take it to the bank with in-game ads and the right endorsers to sport of some clothes or shoes or cars i dont know.....this game has a lot of potential to bring money to Epic its just how they wanna milk the game.... lets hope that really happens

I think it would be great for a studio like Epic to purchase APB. We already know thet they are capable of making great games, and APB always has huge potential. If anyone can make the "GTA MMO" slogan come true, I think Epic has one of the best shots at doing so.

DrKill09
DrKill09

Unless they recode the game from scratch so that it isn't such a resource whore, and make it free to play, I say just let it die. It was a great idea, but horribly executed. I wondered why Realtime Worlds were giving out so few beta keys during the supposed "public" beta. After wasting hours downloading it, I found out why. What a mess.

Oozyrat

Yeah I'm hoping that they remake APB for the fans.

@holypro you want a 5-year developed game to die, i dont think so.

Okay, so there is a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel for APB players/buyers... This could have been expected, though, since the whole shutting down after 3 months is so surreal... I keep my fingers crossed for you APB players! ;)

hmmm, if they do, they could change the game alot, and make it incredibly awesome.

Diebye

Considering the fact that most of the complaints I've heard about this game stem from bad driving/shooting mechanics and the currently implemented customization options were the only thing that got people playing i would say having epic buy this and bring their expertise in shooting/driving would potentially make for a good if not great game. Not to mention they could probably just use the tech to make a gears mmo if they wanted to do that...

tekkelite

if they put chainsaw guns in the game, count me in.

I think it would be good for Epic, because once done with Gears 3, they could turn to MMOs possibly, and use APB as a starting point of some sort. Could be good for all.

This one's a toss-up. The sun may have set on APB. People may not be willing to fork over $50 if they may not be able to play if its going to fold in two months after acquiring it.

pudgexd

Definitely should be free or just purchase to play. Really not worth spending so much $ on subscription , they are better games out there.

"Thanks to the 12-million-unit franchise sales of Gears of War, Epic certainly has the resources to purchase APB" lol what? I'm pretty sure Epic could have bought out a game like this with or without GoW. Ya know, thanks to that whole Unreal thing.
