Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Updated Impressions - Team-Based Warfare

On your feet soldier and check out this look at the team-centric focus of Activision's upcoming multiplayer shooter.

Set in the years just before the original Quake II, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a prequel of sorts, set in the days of the Strogg invasion of Earth. Regardless of your familiarity with Quake lore, however, this online multiplayer game looks like a heck of a lot of fun, thanks to a developer focus that is a bit more ambitious than your simple deathmatch or capture-the-flag games. During a recent pre-E3 press event, Activision showed off the latest version of the game and gave us a brief tour of how its multiplayer philosophy is coming to life.

Coordinating your attacks will be one of the keys to success in Quake Wars' team-centric combat.

The focus in Quake Wars is first and foremost team-centric combat, and you'll be able to play either as members of the Global Defense Force or the invading Strogg; as a result, in order to find success in the game, players will need to understand not only their own role in the team, but exactly what needs to be accomplished as the face of the battle changes throughout the match. The balance of power can shift quickly in a match, as a team takes checkpoints or completes missions only to leave itself vulnerable to a counterattack. As a result, the designer behind Quake Wars wanted to create a team-based mission system that was flexible enough to suit the fluid nature of any battle situation, but easy enough for even new players to understand.

Of course, coordinating attack and defensive maneuvers in other multiplayer games via voice chat can be frustrating and confusing, as players talk over one another or misunderstand commands. The solution in Quake Wars is a context-sensitive radial menu, which pops up with the click of a button. Depending on what you are looking at, the menu system will provide you with options that are devoted to that object. For instance, if you're facing a broken-down transport, you can bring up a menu and call for a teammate to come in and repair it. Bring up the menu while pointed at fallen allies and you'll see options to call in a medic to revive them.

In battle, missions can be generated in three different ways--pre-scripted events built into the missions themselves, automatically generated missions that reflect your changing objectives, and objectives that are set by your teammates (such as repairing vehicles or reviving fallen comrades). Completing missions will also be relatively easy. In one mission shown off during the demo, a GDF covert ops disguised as a Strogg soldier (more on how he did that in a bit) was tasked with the mission of blowing up a shield generator inside a Strogg encampment at the base of a wooded valley. Once the disguised operative was inside the enemy walls, he simply sneaked up to the generator, pressed the "use" key (which caused him to shed his disguise), and, after a few tense seconds of waiting, destroyed his target. As you can see, thanks to Quake Wars' intuitive interface and simple controls, you'll know not only what you need to do, but how to go about doing it.

Welcome to a GDF soldier's nightmare. Vehicles will play a big role in the action.

Both the GDF and Strogg will have their own strengths and weaknesses--the general difference is that the GDF will use more conventional weaponry, while the Strogg will have more alien tech on their side. Both factions will have five character classes to choose from, including infiltrators, medics, and engineers. The engineer, in particular, seems like one of the most fun classes in the game, as they're responsible for some of the biggest toys. Should your team grab a crucial choke point on the map, for example, you can call in for some antiaircraft turrets to defend your position against bombing runs by enemy aircraft, or for artillery units to take out enemy targets from a long distance away. Of course, for every weapon in the game, there's an effective counter or defensive technology--the aforementioned defensive shield is a Strogg specialty. That attack/counterattack philosophy continues with the ability of the aforementioned covert ops' unit to take on the disguise of enemy soldiers, in order to infiltrate the base and either blow up an enemy objective or deploy a spy camera on the premises, which could potentially open up a whole new set of enemy intel, and new team missions to boot.

Though the game's producers spent the most time in the wooded level during the demo, we know that the developer is looking to make sure each of the game's 12 maps has its own look and feel. The levels will take place in territories across the planet, showing off the different battles that take place during the Strogg invasion, including North America, the Arctic, Africa, Europe, and the Pacific region. One of the other missions we saw was set in a series of GDF-controlled biodomes located among Norwegian fjords. The GDF have managed to de-engineer some "Stroggification" technology, and will need to protect the area from a Strogg invasion. As a Strogg attacker, you'll be fighting both outside and inside the expansive biodomes.

With the game just about a month away from store shelves, we look forward to seeing more of what Activision and Splash Damage have in store for us with the game at E3. Stay tuned for more on the game, including a full review, in the coming weeks.

Really enjoyed the demo. It's a nice change from BF2142, i wouldn't compare the 2 though, only to say the pace is a bit faster. Definately worth a look.

I can't wait for this :) I highly doubt that auto-aim will be in the PC. If that's true that'll be as dumb as releasing RE4 for the pc without mouse support.

Ok....trying to find this out but someone said that there is an "auto-aim" feature that is automatically built into this game. I so hope that is only for the console version and not the PC version. Anyone know for sure?

Man this game is more than capture the flag and the las man standing issues, we had new concept of team play, agreements, so is clear this will become a clan game, gamers will develop strategies, this game will had a learning curve, I mean lear to play as team and agree on objectives, no the game itself, so at the beginning a lot and I mean a lot of player will be frustrated cause his (or her) little only shoot and kill neuron cannot process the team based objectives game, so hyper-kinetic 10 years old cannot process very well this kind of objectives...but this will mark a new standard of team based shooter games (sorry my english is not good :-p )

I have read less than glowing reviews of this game and started to get a little disappointed but a friend gave me a key the other day. I don't see what all the complaints are about this game is pretty cool. Sure it's got some bugs to squash but that's what the public beta is for.

Jesus Christ guys screw the 60,000 beta peoples opinion (and yes i have one). No one can give a fair review on this game until at least the demo is out, give that about a few more months no doubt. Even from the demo to retail, patches are brought out, which can drastically change/improve the game. Don't judge a game that hasn't even got a release date. Also, "With the game just about a month away from store shelves"...don't believe this pretty awful reporter

If the beta is any indication, this game will be awful.

Looks and sounds awesome. Finally I can break from Quake 3. Anyway the only thing I'm worried about is this new command option, mainly because will I have time to bring up this command menu in the heat of combat? Also I hope voice communication isn't being cut out.

I'd rather chat over Ventrilo with my buddies anyways, but it's nice to have the option. Still, no big deal. I'm sure the info will be clearly listed on every server.

I sincerely dont understand the bunny hopping in this games! The games that use that are crap!! The speed of the games, I dont have a major problem with that , but bunny hoping?? It ruins the game! A bunch of guys jumping around like horny rabits, how can you think that is cool? And by the way...no team chat?? BIG MISTAKE!!

I think it looks great. I mean all these morons insulting it saying it's crap because its a bunny hoping free for all. The game is suppost to be arcade style and easy gameplay. Look at call of duty multi, it's pretty much a run and gun game but its fun as hell. SO STOP COMPLAINING!

PUERTOROCKPLAYA
PUERTOROCKPLAYA

OK, whats wrong with fast? Why do you want a game to BE LIKE bf2 or any other game. I have bf2 i dont need another (besides the fact i played it for a month and now it collects dust, bf1 was better.) You know this game is partly based on return to castle wolfenstien for the xbox, which was fast and unforgiving to noobs, I played it for 2 years and people still play it and have clan matches online. Anyone who complains this game is fast obviously hasnt played the games its based on. Once you get used to FAST slow games cannot not produce the same exitement .

I was going to buy this game (pre-order since March 07), but when I played the beta...I canceled de pre-order. Bunny Hoping and Running like crazy??? No thanks! No tactics at all!!

curi1122
curi1122

Dont beleave the hype the game is a bunny hoping, strafe shooting, fragarama, deathmatch that they are trying to push as a heavily team orianted game. People run at about 50mph around in circles while jumping and shooting at each other things like cover and other tactics do not come into play at the moment its just an average run and gun game. You can jump off skyscapers and take little to no damage the games comabat style is very deathmath area influnced. It was also announced that the game will feature no VOIP on release and will have ingame advertisement. All in all very dissapointed so far the game never manages to capture the feeling of immersion and teamplay that other games have. Overall from what i have seen and experienced a very average game. You can also check out http://qwtracker.com/qw_trackerstats.php to see just how quicly the number of players (60000+ keys in total)in the beta have dropped and continue to decline daily.

This game is going to be AMAZING. I know, I have the beta... but Gamespot, you really need to drop the August 1st release date. It's stated over in the forums over and over "It's done when it's done, any release date published by anyone other than Splash Damage, ID Software or Activision is false." Don't believe me? Check out the Enemy Territory Forums. You'll notice that post, plus talk about a "Beta 2" which is supposed to be released to tester in the next week or two... With that in mind, August 1st seems like a bit of an early release date.

I mean from all of what I have heard from the guys over at Games for Windows podcast it sounds like a blast.

They should have just made it Battlefield with a conquest mode. Then it would be fun.. Team based games need something simple like capturing the flags.. Its simple, people understand what to do.. Turn the red flag blue.. Easy enough.. All this crap with open the sewer gate and now only an engineer can do sometingn else.. Its just crap and no fun..

sangoanuta

"It's a beta, it's far from finished." Gimme a break with the beta excuse. The whole gameplay is broken everything is weird. Looks like Unreal Tournament with vehicles and objectives. It doesn't look like a game for 2007. I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT GRAPHICS, those look great.

I was thinking it was looking too slow... The actual combat looked kinda gay you can't sprint and shoot? what? So for anyone thinking "You can't run and shoot inrl" go play enemy territory, and realise that was a major thing in the game- moving fast and shooting, strafing etc.
