Ellen Page says Naughty Dog "ripped off" her likeness

Juno and Inception star says similarities between her and The Last of Us' Ellie were "not appreciated."

by

Inception star Ellen Page has said developer Naughty Dog "ripped off" her likeness for The Last of Us.

On Reddit, Page said the initial similarities between herself and The Last of Us' Ellie were "not appreciated" because she was also cast as Jodie Holmes in Beyond: Two Souls, which is due out for PlayStation 3 in October 2013.

"I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness," said Page, "but I am actually acting in a videogame called Beyond Two Souls, so it was not appreciated."

After initial comments regarding Ellie's resemblance to Page, Naughty Dog altered the design of the character to more closely resemble her voice actress Ashley Johnson.

Responding to Page's comments, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann took to Twitter to praise the work of of Johnson. "Ellie from The Last of Us was perfectly played by @TheVulcanSalute. No one could've done a better job. Please go follow her and retweet."

PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us launched two weeks ago. For more information, check out GameSpot's review.

Not saying that I think she should sue Naughty Dog but just to clarify for the people saying that you can't sue because of a face, there is such a thing as suing for the commercial use of likeness. I wrote a long comment explaining what that is but it got deleted when I tried to post because I wasn't signed in first haha. I'm too lazy to rewrite it so here's a link if anyone's interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personality_rights#United_States

Just for this, I'm not buying Beyond.

What's the big deal? Why because she didn't collect a check for it? That's the problem with actors nowadays. I see older actors go through extremes for a movie role, or make sacrifices to ensure that the movie is up to par. And she thinks that acting in a video game prevents her from showing up in another video game? How does being in Beyond Two Souls change anything? I think it should be flattering for them to want to use her likeness in a game. Hollywood is just too damn commercial with all these little bullshit ideas they focus on. Some people forget that they are actually human beings because the media makes them seem larger than life. Funny.

It took them this long to notice? I thought she was modelled after her when I saw the first trailer ND released.

Both games ('Beyond' and 'The last of us') are both are financed by Sony, so this this is like Sony's property, right? This doesn't make any sense...

Mmm... think about it, is she really suing Naugthy Dog for this? She just said "but I am actually acting in a videogame called Beyond Two Souls, so it was not appreciated." Can you really sue someone for a face. If this is true, I can see Natalie Portman suing Keira Knightley. lol

mariet31
mariet31

This is really stupid, you can't suing for a face. Do you know how many girls are in the world who look like Ellen Page? Is like hearing Natalie Portman suing Keira Knightley because the face of Keira appears in a video game. Do you understand what I'm saying? I think most of the comments of people who are defending her just because they are her stupid fans.

Do you realize what you are supporting? The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is probably the most ridiculous law ever created. There are companies patenting human DNA, and people like you are supporting this.

can somebody come up with a nicer way of sayin "just shut up and cash your checks"?

I'm surprised that other actors haven't complained before. Naughty Dog has a habit of making their characters look like actors who aren't involved with the game in any way. Nathan Drake looks just like Nathan Fillion, and again they didn't even bother to use a different first name. The female antagonist (I can't remember her name) from Uncharted 3 looked just like Helen Mirren. In the Last of Us, besides Ellie resembling Ellen Page and having a similar first name, Joel looks like Josh Brolin and the character "David" looks just like actor David Straithairn.

Okay screw it, as it appears no one that is leaving negative comments has any reason or is doing any research what-so-ever.  If they did they would know it was a harmless answer to an AMA question, she doesn't want to take action, and she isn't even offended by it.  She just prefers the game she acts in to be the only one that uses her image, and someone asked her a question specifically accusing another game of using her image and she answered accordingly.  BUT, it seems no one wants to think about that.  You all want to jump on this idiotic band wagon and call her a "bitch" and make all these sarcastic comments.  What is wrong with gaming journalism these days?  We have become the tabloids.  Always taking things out of context with no regard for the people we are harming in the process.

Now the screenshots from both games look almost the same. Just that The Last of Us girl is younger and has blue eyes. Specially on the first screenshots and artwork .

Is it me, or did Naughty Dog's creative director just ignored Ellen Page's comment, there was no reason why Ellie from the Last of Us, looks like Ellen Page. WTF. Even their first 3 letter of their names are identical "Ell"!

did you ever notice how much Yoshi from Mario looks like Ellen Page.. same round face, same eyes. Foul play??

I thought it was Ellen Page all along until I saw the credits.  I mean it looked like & sounded like her.  I was surprise it wasn't her.

Naughty Dog...next time use balls (no, not those you pervs) as main characters as not to rip off the likeness of around 6 billion humans (we demand 1 dolla each nao btw for your continued use of bipedal mammals in your games. The nerve!)

MasterOfSprites

People are really blowing her comment on Reddit out of proportion.  She didn't say she wanted to take action or she was super pissed.  She just said she would prefer it if her image was only used in the games she actually acts in.  The question she was asked directly asked her what she thought about her image being used in another video game.  It isn't like she went out of her way to bitch about it.

Just watched the video review for Deadpool. I was sure Ellen Page did his acting, but it appears it's not true

First time i watched last of us gaming video, i thought that Ellen Page acted her also. She is an actress, and her face belongs her own. If she goes court about this, she is going to win anyway. But in this new world everything has an advertisement advantage. She may not go court about this, but everbody will remember her an last of us actress also.

She is a very promising actress and i shocked her performance at "Hard Candy".

Before saying negative things, think her a proffessional actress.

I wonder how many people out there look a bit like Ellen Page and feel a tad miffed that it's *her* likeness. I wonder who I may have ripped off by being born...

Dudeinator

And this is how shit gets blown out of proportion.

It all starts with a comment in an AMA session on Reddit where she said that she didn't appreciate a video game character had her likeness without permission

and now suddenly we've got articles on the internet making it seem like she's making an attack on Naughty Dog for ripping off her image.

"Journalism" at its finest. Not specifically singling out Gaston, but if you're green-lighting this type of material to be published on this website, then you are part of the problem.

123whatever
123whatever

i think people are blowing this up much more than what she intended. its not like she came out on her own and said that... someone asked her that on an open reddit. its apparent what naughty dog was doing, duh - they're known to do that. it adds to the immersion. even though its an incredible game - im sure most of you would feel the same.. violated in some way. ffs ign/gamespot.. its not that big of a deal

Ellen Page needs to calm down. Her likeness was ripped off? So she admits she looks 14? Hell, she's acting like a 14 year old.

@skunkpants Yeah, that's what I thought. When I saw the massively redesigned character I figured something was up.

@Mizkreant I disagree Katherine Marlowe from Uncharted 3 looks nothing like Helen Mirren.  Marlowe looks more like the person who did her voice and motion capture Rosalind Ayres.

mariet31
mariet31

@MizkreantRight, so according to your logic Natalie Portman should sue Keira Knightley. You are a genius! What's the difference? If there really was a girl with that face, Ellen should still should sue her because her face looks alike. That's what your saying... There would be ALWAYS a person who could be similar to someone else.

Imagine Leonardo da Vinci painting randomly a girl, and then appears a girl suing him because she claims that the girl looks like her. Literally any idiot on the street could sue a company because this reason, some dude claims that a fictional character looks like him, and can he sue because of that?. Your difference is because we are talking of "some famous person".

mariet31
mariet31

@Magoto2007

Exactly ARTWORK. If I paint a picture (imagined) with some random girl face and I try to sell that picture, are you saying that any girl in the street can sue me claiming that I paint her? Do you know something about DNA? So Ellen receives special treatment because sh'e famous. Yes, Ellie looks similar to Ellen Page, but they are not identical. If Ellie face were exactly the same as the actrees who represent her, can Ellen still sue her? Look what you're saying. People in the US are so stupid for defending the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

mariet31
mariet31

@gamergath

We're talking about human traits. For example, some dude in Afganistan creates a character, nd by accident that character to looked like me, can I sue him? No. There a a lot of people who look like Ellen, she can't sue them because of that.

She is behaving like celebrity, surprise!

mariet31
mariet31

@Kosyong

I have a friend who totally looks like Ellen page, I think my friend should sue Ellen Page and Naugthy Dog too. She 's two years older than Ellen Pag, so is obvious that Ellen Page stole my friend's face.

Reflecting_God
Reflecting_God

@olcaydsr No one's face is 'their own'. Somewhere in the world, there are many people that look just like you. There's only so many ways a face can be built. Many different combinations, but still, you are always going to have somebody that looks just like you somewhere out there.

Her being an actress does not change anything. Unless she goes out and trademarks her face, it would not fly at all in court if she did that. It'd be looked at as a joke and a waste of time.

@Zero-954 I was going to buy it until I read it was a console exclusive. It's cool by me though. Every system has it's exclusives which is fine by me. First I wanted it, then I read it was a console exclusive and now I shrug about it. Meh, who cares, it's just a game and I don't even have enough time to play all the games I've already bought recently. The only reason I'm here now is because I clicked a link I was curious about.

@mariet31 Dude...before going around this thread insulting anyone and everyone you disagree with, maybe you should read the article closer. You keep talking about Ellen suing...where the hell are you getting that? No one is suing anyone here; she was asked a question and she answered it truthfully. She didn't call a press conference, didn't make a huge deal out of this. She ANSWERED A QUESTION.

This site's community has become as bad as IGN's or GameFAQs's. I'm beginning to think most of the adult users on this site followed most of the editorial staff to GiantBomb after GerstmannGate.

@mariet31: Well she should chill-out then, all that time when there were trailers of it back in 2012, when its finally release she acts macho about her appearance. Totally Celebrity like!:)

@focuspuller @SNor100 Perhaps, but you gotta admit, its a little ridiculous. She has a current game roll, has been a lead in multiple movies, and is probably richer than any of us can even dream of being. She has nothing to really complain about.

@befo72 It's all good man, sorry I kinda went off on you myself. I've just been really frustrated lately with the quality of some of the journalism and some of the community on this site and took it out on you. It could be that I'm just getting old and cranky...lol

mariet31
mariet31

@befo72@mariet31

Sorry if I sounded rude, I wasn't trying to insult anyone directly. I'm saying that when you support something, you may be supporting other things. There are a lot of games influenced by actors, but you don't hear about them trying to sue a company for that. Anyway, now thinking about it, this is just so absurd. Maybe she just say something and the media take it as a sue.

CaneMob

@focuspuller Right. It's not like she's suing fucking Naughty Dog. She's just saying she didn't like what they did is all.

focuspuller
focuspuller

@SNor100 @focuspuller Again, if you were a working actor you would be singing a different tune.

What is ridiculous is that Naughty Dog thought they could release a game with a well known actor's image without facing some sort of action.

In point of fact, same game, an artist's rendering of a Boston Subway map was used without permission.
