Elder Scrolls V confirmed as a direct sequel?

European reports indicate Bethesda's next big project will be a "chronological" follow-up to award-winning 2006 fantasy RPG.

Source: The Danish arm of game-news site Eurogamer.

What we heard: Ever since The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was released in April 2006, speculation has run rife about its sequel. The fact that publisher Bethesda Softworks' parent ZeniMax Media has an online division working on a mystery-shrouded massively multiplayer game has led to some rumors that it might be a sequel to the game in the vein that BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic is being billed as a sequel to the single-player Knights of the Old Republic games.

Is Bethesda on the verge of opening up on a new Elder Scrolls?

Now comes word from Eurogamer's Danish division that a follow-up to Oblivion is indeed in the works, and it will be a direct sequel. The site's source "not only confirmed that the game is in current production, but also spoke briefly about the content--with fantasy-sounding phrases like Dragon Lord, something with The Blades--and that voice acting for the characters in the game is currently happening in the weeks to follow." The source did not say if the game was single-player or massively multiplayer.

The official story: "No comment." - Bethesda rep.

Bogus or not bogus?: Likely not bogus. Oblivion's massive storyline left a rich legacy that is ripe for sequelization. And although Bethesda has focused on the wildly popular Fallout games of late, it is unlikely it will let the 16-year-old franchise lay fallow for long. Indeed, the developer-publisher's executive producer Todd Howard told Eurogamer that his company is on the verge of unveiling the game, as it is quite far along in development.

"One thing I can say is that from when you first hear about it to when it's out will be the shortest it's been for us," he said at last year's QuakeCon. "It's pretty far along. When we show it, we want to show a lot, because there's a lot of game there to play right now."

ohh how i hope this isn't an mmo, don't have anything against mmo's but it just wouldn't be the same ES experience if it was

God, I hope it's better than EVERY other Elder Scrolls game. I wanted to like Oblivion, but I just couldn't. It had so many flaws, clunky combat, awful voice acting, hideous visuals, a boring story. But seeing at how much of a jump they made between Oblivion and the two Fallouts, I have fairly high hopes for this.

Always wanted the sequel to this Epic Game title. Finally got some news on it. Hoping the game play remains the same and not like Dragon Age. It's Silly when you can not aim to kill but instead have to just click, click and click in the name of action. WELCOME BACK ELDER SCROLLS

Maybe it'll be as bug-ridden as GOTY or New Vegas.

Hmm, I know my way around Bethesda and if it's a Z-Max team working on this, it almost certainly will be an MMO. We can only hope that BGS (best studio on the planet IMO) is developing a single player mode in parallel. Probably not though. I can't see Oblivion 2 or whatever they call it being nearly on par if it resides solely online. Reduced graphics, increased glitches, and a monthly subscription? No thanks.

If it's an MMO i will die a little inside. I'm not against Co-Op Elder Scrolls, in fact im for it... but for part V of this game it should stay the same type of game rather than change the dynamic totaly. Make a spin off if you want an MMO or RTS or whatever :) Now that's said... Fingers Crossed that ES-V is comiong soon & will be awesome.

Even a rumor is welcome at this point, I can only say that my hopes have been raised. Heres hoping for a huge reveal sometime soon!!!

@Sw1tched If you understood game design, you would know its not that simple at times to just add things. To add in costumes in a fighting game for example that donot enhance you but your appearance is ok, you can throw that in. However, when you start talking about adding extra characters to say a fighting game then you change the balance of the game. ES games have been built as a singleplayer experience. Adding a COOP would either do one of two things, changing the balance of teh game to make it for Co Op and just changing it far too much to even be playable in singleplayer i.e Resident Evil 5. Two it would be a tacked on feature and a feature that would take time to work on and deviate from the singleplayer experience. Sorry but it does NOT Need it Option or not. ES is a singleplayer series, and should stay one. Do yourself a favor and do a bit research into gameplay mechanics, and you will understand why it could seriously hurt a game by just adding in such a feature.

Sw1tched

@TheTrueMagusX1 Absolutely this the ES series needs CO-OP. I Want to explore this huge world you say is for exploring WITH A FRIEND. I only know of one loner adventurer and that was CONAN. So why does everyone have to be CONAN? i want a companion to explore with. Besides thats why it's a OPTION. You don't want it, but i do. End of story, don't use it then. I want co-op

@jewell21 You're wasting your time, developers don't read gamer's post, if they did, we would never get abominations for games like Gods and Generals.

@chineolee I think the author is using the fact that KOTOR's sequel is coming in the form of an MMO to demonstrate that Oblivion's sequel may very well be an MMO, as well. Each series has traditionally been a single player RPG, so if one of them can be continued as an MMO, then the other can, too. @Zenimax and/or Bethesda I really, really, REALLY hope that this sequel will NOT be an MMO. Pleaaaaaase don't force me to pay $10-20/month to play a game that would be better on a console with a controller and with better graphics and animations. PLEASE don't pull a Bioware on me. I'm already trying to figure out how to get my hands on a new computer to play TOR, which probably won't be as good as KOTOR I or II, anyway. PUH-LEAAAASE just make more of the awesomeness for which you've won so many awards.

@Savior24 "They" - ZeniMax Online. NOT Bethesda Game Studios, who made Oblivion.

Savior24

@ZippyLemon You said: "They are currently working on an MMO if leaked court documents are to be believed. The same documents rule out the probability of this being a Fallout MMO, so it is most likely an Elder Scrolls MMO." So in TWO every long winded messages, you finally conclude that there may in fact be an Elder Scrolls MMO? Wow...you could have saved us both a lot of writing/reading (not to mention some very tenuous conjecture), and just concluded that in your original post! Thanks for finally coming to your senses that it is, or may in fact be plausible!!!!

ZippyLemon

@chineolee ZeniMax owns Bethesda. ZeniMax owns The Elder Scrolls. ZeniMax has another company (not Bethesda) working on an MMO. It is rumoured to be a TES MMO.

@Savior24 One thing that I should further clarify is that Bioware is made up of four separate studios. Bioware Austin is making TOR and they are supplemented by a team at Bioware Edmonton. Bioware Austin was created specifically to work on TOR. The studios that made KotOR and Mass Effect and Dragon Age are NOT working on TOR (with the probably exception of writers). Bethesda is in a similar position. Bethesda is comprised of two companies: BethSoft and BGS (Bethesda Game Studios). BethSoft are publishers. They publish most of BGS' games and some independent developers' as well (like Obsidian and New Vegas). BGS are a developing studio. They made Oblivion and Fallout 3. Bethesda as a whole is owned by ZeniMax Media. ZeniMax Media has a subsidiary called ZeniMax Online Studios. They are currently working on an MMO if leaked court documents are to be believed. The same documents rule out the probability of this being a Fallout MMO, so it is most likely an Elder Scrolls MMO.

ZippyLemon

@Savior24 Meanwhile, BGS are working on their own game. BGS are ultimately owned by ZeniMax Media, as are ZeniMax Online Studios. It would be a tremendously bad allocation of resources and IPs to have two separate studios working on MMOs at the same time, especially when one of those studios (BGS) has never made an MMO and does not have the experience or talent to do so ('talent' as in a group of people with skills tailored to MMOs). BGS makes phenomenal single player RPGs. It would be ridiculous for ZeniMax to have them working on an MMO (which are shaky investments as it is with WoW dominating the market so utterly) when they already own a studio created for the purpose of making MMOs. So I reiterate: BGS (Bethesda Game Studios - you know, those guys who make single player games) do not make MMOs, and their parent company would not allow them to anyhow.

Savior24

@ZippyLemon One thing that I should point out is that BioWare has NEVER made an MMO until now, with "Knights of the Old Republic". Just because a developer has NEVER done something, doesn't mean that it will NEVER do it!!!

I should probably point out that Bethesda Game Studios don't make MMOs...

I have no problem if they do release some sort of MMO. Will be more annoyed if it's a monthly fee one though. However, having said that I'd still probably much prefer a single player installment, but would also like to see some form of multiplayer available, maybe just an online arena or something to spice things up a bit. Anyhoo, whatever they do I'm sure it'll be good, Oblivion remains my favourite game of all time, and I have faith that it's a series near impossible to ruin :D

This needs to remain a Single player story, as a multiplayer component will ruin it (ala Two Worlds). Oblivion is one of my favourite RPGs, and am really looking forward to seeing what Bethesda pull out of the bag.

Vampiro_HuntT3R
Vampiro_HuntT3R

Still no news? I hope this really is true. Please something. What I want outta the game. 1. Better graphics. 2. No MMO. 3. Great Environment. 4. Better looking Characters. 5. Choices influences on the game story. 6. Better Fighting combos. 7. Believable things as ("If no one is looking and you steal something, you should still be safe". If you kill someone and no one is there, it should still be safe. 8. No more Oblivion gates. The only thing I REALLY FOUND BORING in Oblivion are the oblivion gates. They were just... I dont know. :( I didnt like them. Other than that, this game is my most favorite. 9. More guilds like New Vegas and how when you change the guild clothes, give you different options. That's all. :D There might be more.
