Eidos throws down DS Gauntlet

Classic hack-and-slash '80s game series officially coming to Nintendo's handheld this year.

Back in February, Eidos registered a new Gauntlet game with the US Entertainment Software Rating Board, and although the listing was quickly removed from the database, it was too late--the cat was out of the bag.

Now, Eidos has come clean about Gauntlet for the DS and has officially announced the title. Simply called Gauntlet, the new game will be a remake of Midway’s 1985 arcade classic hack-and-slash title.

Gauntlet takes place in a fantasy world, with 40 maps set over three realms, and gamers can choose to play as an elf, warrior, wizard, or valkyrie--each with its own strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities.

As well as single-player mode, there will be a four-player Wi-Fi co-op mode that will use the DS microphone to allow allies to communicate. A range of competitive multiplayer games are also included, such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Treasure Horde.

Gauntlet for the DS is being developed by Backbone Entertainment, a division of Foundation 9 Entertainment, and is set for release "later this year."

In the meantime, those desperate for a Gauntlet fix can download Gauntlet from Xbox Live Arcade and Gauntlet II from the PlayStation Network.
