Eidos: Thief PC version 'extremely important'

Producer Stephane Roy says developer's goal is to make sure PC version not a straight copy of console iteration.

Gamers worried that Eidos Montreal is focusing more intently on the console versions of Thief than the PC version can breathe a sigh of relief. Producer Stephane Roy told Strategy Informer that the studio is committing the resources necessary to ensure the PC version is not a simple port.

"No doubt on our side the PC version is extremely important," Roy said. "Just playing Thief with a keyboard and mouse it's different so we must make sure we support that well. For making the PC version we think like a PC gamer, for consoles it's a different type of beast. It's one of our goals to make sure that the PC version isn't just a copy of the console version."

Thief is due out in 2014 for the PC, PlayStation 4, and "other next-gen platforms." The game will not feature a competitive multiplayer component.

Roy also revealed that Eidos Montreal considered switching the perspective for Thief and making it a third-person game instead of a first-person game. He said the studio made a "full" third-person demo for Thief, but this was ultimately scrapped.

"We gave it a try as there are a lot of games that work better and are more fun in third-person, so we wanted to see if it was possible to have Thief in full third-person," Roy said. "So we gave it a try but finally we decided that part of the series' DNA is the first-person perspective, for the immersion and to convince the player that you are a Master Thief about to pickpocket someone."

this is what I feel like when they talk about PC exclusive stuff

The wording in this article shows that the PC is a secondary concern. Its like they are saying the console is the main focus but don't worry, the PC version is important too. Like parents who tell their underachieving child that they love him just has much as his more successful brother. The very fact they need to give that reassurance proves they don't treat both as equals.

There are so few good PC focused series left, it sucks every time I see the consoles claim another one.

Good to know.  Don't let me down, Eidos!

" It's one of our goals to make sure that the PC version isn't just a copy of the console version." Wha---? This is a PC game. That statement implies that the console version is being developed first and is the main focus. Maybe it should have read "The console version isn't just a copy of the PC version."

Considered 3rd person view? Why, on the first place? Thief 1,2 and 3 were 1st! 3rd person doesn´t work for me on FPS games! RPGs ok, FPS no! And i really hate when original games that worked in 1st suddenly have their sequels transformed in 3rd because some smartass thought it would be cute. I just hope they don´t ruin this like they did with Duke Nukem! Good decision here.

Eidos Montreal games are always a class in PC. Hope Thief 4 will be one of them.

High five Eidos, you never dissapoint. Every game that comes from these devs is a cult classic.

Other developers should think like this too. Capcom kröhm.. While the RE6 wasn't complete disaster on PC it still shows it's just a port from the console, controls eh? Well atleast we can use mouse this time around without heavy modding.

nooo please put the 3rd person back in plz!!!

I'd rather this game be 3rd person. At least give the option, like the last Thief game, where you could switch on the fly. Playing a game like this feels to clunky in 1st person.

Give priority to everybody! PC or Console, all are looking for a Good Game as a gamer!

Yes of course we're important. How the hell can you dev a game without a PC?

You know how to do this?  Develop it on the PC and port it to the console.  Don't be a fool and do it the other way around.

Every PC version is extremely important !! Why do devs always forget where it all started ? Fuck casual console gaming and limited button commands seriously ! Its time that they put some awesome games back on the PC. BF3 and StarCraft 2 paved the way I hope the next gen consoles will be on par with PC hardware so its easier to cross platform, cheers !

Pretty sure you had the option to switch to 3rd person in Deadly Shadows - didn't really help at all with the gameplay, tho. The absolute best thing about the earlier games being on the PC was being able to download the fan missions. A lot of them were as good or better than the original missions. And unlike current DLC they were all free!

Sorry, I never believe this stuff anymore.

It's nice that they are focusing on a PC specific version but I think I'm more happy that they scrapped plans to go 3rd person. That would have totally ruined it for me.

There is still hope for some developers that care for PC I was worried for a while there lmao

Thank you Eidos... I salute you! You commitment to the 'true' ideal of gaming... it's admirable. Your understanding of the PC community, will not be forgotten, though it may be buried underneath all the console whiners.

Good to hear. I'd be okay with Nixxes creating the port too, they did a fine job with Human Revolution and Hitman: Absolution (even though Hitman was a horrible desecration of the Hitman series, it was still a great port job).

Confirmed PC settings as DLC. Just kidding, though I wouldn't be surprised if they would actually go ahead with that.

I stopped playing PC years ago.... It was great with games like age of empires, Dark reign, shockwave games, diablo etc. Now most games consist of FPS (which can also be played on consoles) and MMO. Heck, you barely can LAN nowadays with new games. To me, it has lost it's shine that i've always liked about it so I don't bother with it much more

Oh look, a completely pointless article (No offense Eddie). Devs of the new Thief game saying that PC is important.

The success and acclaim came from the first two titles. I don't think many of the old school Thief fans really liked how they mainstreamed Thief 3 to make it work on a console. And which is why I am slightly afraid that they will try to continue the trend with this title as well.

I guess we can say that the same is currently happening with Rockstar, having the audacity of not even announcing a PC version for GTA 5 or release it in the same time as console after they made their brand known and success of the computer platform and alienating them now is pure blasphemy in my eyes.

Don't care. This game is Dishonored 2: another plague, another corrupt leather, another mission set in a brothel... And no Hammerites or Pagans. No sale.

@Printul_Noptii  Umm....'it all started' on gaming consoles. They were invented long before PC's and PC games were.

I'm hoping for as good Stereoscopic 3D as we got with Tomb Raider 2013!

@Printul_Noptii Dude... just be quiet and accept the love we're getting before the new consoles come out and they forget us again...

We're "extremely important" now, and "filthy pirates" when they need us to be.

@Land-0-Funk Thief 3 was also on PC and was a very good game and a great finisher to the whole story of Garrett. I would definitely recommend it since you played 1 and 2.

@cboye18 Sorry to call you ignorant, but you kind of are here. There are more games on the PC today than there ever have been, plenty of them very shiny and cool. Not going to name names, but check steampowered.com or newgrounds.com sometime, just to give you two examples.

@Icepick_Trotter @Printul_Noptii Too fucking true. Every single time a console nears death, SUDDENTLY THEY GIVE A FUCK!

Still, Eidos never dissapointed on PC titles, so i'm willing to believe them.

@solidsnakex2 @jj2112 That's because in Thief 3, they totally messed up the pagans' speech, with all the "bes", "finders" and so on.
