Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has provided an update on the upcoming sequel, saying in a new interview that he believes it's going to "revolutionize" how sequels are made in Hollywood.

First off, he told Collider that Edge of Tomorrow 2's story is "so amazing" and "much better than the first." He also confirmed that the film is a "sequel that's a prequel," which could mean a few things.

Edge of Tomorrow's story was themed around time travel. As Collider points out, the movie ends with Tom Cruise's character resetting the time loop, which brings the story back to where it began. That's interesting to think about with Edge of Tomorrow 2 being a "sequel that's a prequel."

Liman isn't talking specifics at this point, but he sounds pretty jazzed about the idea he's come up with for the structure and what impact it could have on Hollywood's approach to sequels in the future.

"I've had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like, 'Aha, that's the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.' I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it's gonna revolutionize how people make sequels."

Warner Bros.' Edge of Tomorrow came to theaters in June 2014 and made more than $370 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Stars Cruise and Emily Blunt are returning for the sequel, but there is no word yet on a release date or other cast members.
