eBay auction for iPhone with Flappy Bird installed nearing $100,000 [UPDATE]

Listings have now vanished.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, the eBay pages mentioned in this story have vanished from the auction site. We've reached out to an eBay representative for comment.

The original story is below.

Two separate eBay auctions for iPhones with Flappy Bird installed have attracted dozens of bids, both of which have top bids so far of over $90,000. Creator Dong Nguyen pulled the game from app stores yesterday, meaning the mobile hit is now an instant collector's item.

Flappy Bird isn't exactly "rare," however, as it's been downloaded more than 50 million times. The brutally difficult but simply designed mobile game is still playable on your device if you've already downloaded it.

With six days to go, seller "pindrus" has received 74 bids for an iPhone 5S with a copy of the game. The top bid on that auction is $99,900. Separately, eBay seller "Kristenater91" has received 65 bids--with a top bid of $90,200--for an auction ending this evening.

It's possible that bids are being run up by trolls, as was the case with super rare NES game Nintendo World Championship late last month. We won't know for sure until the auctions end.

Nguyen removed Flappy Bird from iTunes and Google Play yesterday, saying its removal was not related to legal issues (it bears resemblances to the Super Mario franchise), but rather because "I cannot take this anymore," he said, referring to all the attention coming his way.

Nguyen is forgoing a major payday by pulling Flappy Birds, as he revealed last week that the game was pulling in an average of $50,000 per day in advertising revenue.

Imagine what would be if the similar story happen on the game like The Last of Us or GTA 5.

These are some pretty diehard apple fans if they didn't just want to buy a Android device and go download an apk. You could jailbreak a idevice cheaper than that and find the app.

Oh, you have got to be kidding me *facepalm*

Crappy Bird aside, this whole incident just shows a grand weakness of the whole app-store operating systems. If they decide you don't have access to something even if free, you cannot. Whereas in PC people would have just copied onto a file sharing site and anybody can access it if they so desire.

It's too late to get the game through stores if you've never had it installed, however, if I go to the Google Play store while logged-in with the account I got the game with, I can see the download page again, and re-install.  So, it's possible, at least with Android, that if you're close enough, and/or trust someone, that you can share your login information with friends who haven't had it before.

If 'account sharing' works the same for itunes, then perhaps that is a way more people can get it legitimately.

This is the reason why we need to put back negative feedback on buyers!!!

Why is this being given so much attention? I'd say that literally no one in a specialized gaming news website gives a damn about this.

With so many "flappy birds" news I was actually reading "birds" instead of "bids" in this article and it was making no sense to me...

IF this wasn't troll bids than this is just another example of the Gap between the ultra stinky rich and everyone else.

It would be comedy if they actually took it as a real bid, went around to the bidders house, took possession of it and made them work it off in a fucking sewage treatment plant until it was paid. See how many people follow this trend... ha ha ha

Ebay has a real problem with troll bids at the moment and no real way of dealing with them.

So I just called ebay and recorded the call. They told me that the policy was just rolled out yesterday that all devices need to be factory reset in order to sell on ebay. After asking him to email or direct me to the documentation for that policy, the rep told me that the policy was only internal and the IT department is currently working on rolling it out to the public, and should be posted within this week! I was like what?? So I have the recorded call of them telling me this. He also confirmed that all jailbroken devices will be in violation of this new policy. My main issue is, how do you enforce a policy that you do not have documentation for?? They removed my listings too.

Ebay is in the process of taking down all listings. They are not allowing phones to be sold without system reset.

Just like when you buy it from the store. Ebid UK allows listings. It is a good alternative to Ebay.

It is obviously being upbid by trolls who have no intention of paying. It is irresponsible to continue to encourage them by posting "news" articles like this.

@dloadfree Any download that requires a survey or completing an offer is a waste of time.

@afigueroa_pr  And Ebay needs to allow us an option to force bidders to set up some kind of preorder reserve payment that goes to the seller if the buyer decides to bail.

@PlatinumPaladin Better off without it. Just one of many games, you can find it's inspirations and clones online pretty easily I hear.

@vadagar1  I 100% doubt anyone is actually paying this kind of money for a phone with that game, it's fake bids by trolls, I thought that was obvious...
