Earthworm Jim/Neverhood creators open Kickstarter for Armikrog

Upcoming PC game from Doug TenNapel and Pencil Test Studios to be a claymation-animated point-and-click adventure title.

Earthworm Jim co-creator Doug TenNapel and Pencil Test Studios, a group composed of the people responsible for the Neverhood franchise in the late '90s, have opened a Kickstarter campaign for their upcoming adventure game called Armikrog.

Good news for Neverhood fans: Armikrog will be in claymation.

The game will be using stop-motion animation and sculpture for its art style and graphics. The point-and-click adventure title is about a space explorer named Tommynaut and his blind alien dog called Beak-Beak, who crash-land on an unknown planet and get locked up in a fortress called Armikrog. The soundtrack will be composed by Terry S. Taylor, who worked on The Neverhood.

At this point in time, the Kickstarter campaign total was at $403,258 with a pledge goal of $900,000. Digital rewards for contributors who donate $30 and beyond are a concept art book, a soundtrack sampler, and even a production puppet of main character Tommynaut.

The game is slated for a PC and Mac release and will be distributed through Steam and other download services. Head to the campaign page for more information.

Please release this on the PS4!  Please!  I loved Skullmonkeys on the Playstation.  Never got to try the Neverhood, though.

It's the last day if any potential backers happen to see this

I just couldn't help myself, put up 90 bucks to get the boxed copy. I hope they get a surge of donations this week or it may not get funded!

Funny thing Gamespot originally gave The Neverhood 4.9 (poor) while the user review is averaged at 9.1 out of 750 reviewers. If Joe Hutsko still works for gamespot please convey this message: The Neverhood is one of the greatest point and click adventure games ever created.  Joe Hutsko I hope a bus runs over your mutilated corpse!!!!

This is great news. I may have to back this one.

Supported the second I saw Mike Nelson on the cast list.

I see Kickstarter projects all the time and I'm like, "Oh, that's cool", but never really donate. Not this time. This game NEEDS to be made.

OH... and I wanted to thank gamespot and Johnathan Toyad for posting this article... This alone might get enough word out there to get the game going. It'll be a real shame if they don't get the money they need to make this. It looks fantastic!

Just tossed them 45 bucks... for the game, digital imagebook, and full soundtrack. Not bad. Really hope it gets all the funding it needs!

And come on people. stop saying "I loved the Neverhood, I hope they get funded"... and just give them some money!!! Heck... 20 bucks will get a digital copy!

Wow, I haven't thought about Neverhood for years! That game was brilliant with so much charm and character. I hope this gets funded.

Another Neverhood? Am I dead? Is this heaven?

The think that I love about this is that they've stayed true to the original style design which is PERFECT!
That's something I didn't see in the new DFA that's coming up- Broken Age..

I have been waiting a long time for this to happen. I was always a huge fan of The Neverhood and also a huge fan of Earthworm Jim. My only wish is that this would have happened sooner. Its nearly halfway to its goal already, just needs some more people to hear about it. Thank you for running an article on this gamespot! Armikrog Army

Why don't these buttholes take the same risk that everyone else does and fund their own games for once. I hope this fails and/or bombs.

Point'n'click from them? I don't know - claymation is awesome, I give them that, also Nelson, but I'm afraid it will be like 5 hrs long :/

@KingofCabal I looked up this Joe Hutsko, and he's a tech writer,  who's written several of the "For Dummies"  books;  Macs for Dummies, iPhone for Dummies, etc.   I wonder if he still games?

krodista
krodista

@KingofCabal It is surprising that The Neverhood does get bad reviews, but reviews are just the opinions of a couple of people. Maybe they didnt get the game, maybe the puzzles were too hard for them, maybe they didnt like the sophmoric humor...who knows. As for me, its the greatest game ever made...but here again, just one guy giving a review.

krodista

@danyjr I miss The Neverhood as well. This is about our only chance to see something like this again, so we have to make sure it happens!

krodista

@Poison-tooth awesome! me to! now we just need to spread the word around to let more people know about it!

kpolicoff

@unaminous I totally agree. I normally pass them over. This is the first time I've ever actually given money to a kickstarter... and I might toss them some more for one of those shirts and even the behind the scenes video. The work that goes into a claymation set is really interesting.

krodista
krodista

@kpolicoff With something like this, everyone just needs to reach out to those they know who might have interest in the game. Sadly, a lot of people may back and never tell their friends who might be equally excited.

krodista

@max-hit Its not another neverhood, but you arent dead...this is happening!

@naz99 thats wonderful, please make sure you tell your friends as well. We gotta make this happen!

@dandangogogo

Do you have a spare 900,000 $ lying around by any chance? Most indie devs look towards publishers for funding. These guys either were rejected or don't want to be shackled by publisher.

komuchen
komuchen

@dandangogogo Well... because why shell out your money if there are people who want to pay for that?

Also amount of money they want - I don't know if it's radiciulous, joke or what. Guys from Shadow of the Eternals want 1 350 000 for 12 episodes (it will fail). I don't even know what to think about it. Awesome concept, but like kickstarter, it can also not deliver and it will be a bomb. Poor people :(

macca366

@komuchen In an interview they said they estimated it to be "15 hours, possibly 20"

FAIL_TR0LL
FAIL_TR0LL

@komuchen

Why does a game have to be some kind of arbitrary length in order to be good?

krodista
krodista

@Deadly_Nemesis This is considered a launching pad for the guys to create other games, if you want more games like earthworm jim, please back this one. Their next game will most likely be something more like EWJ

krodista
krodista

@MAD_AI Its not that they were rejected, they just knew it would never sell if you went to a major publisher. Its a niche market as a niche game and most gaming companies only care about titles that will sell millions. Plus, often you have to sell your rights to the game in order to publish, which is what screwed these guys with Earthworm Jim and The Neverhood. Now they cant make sequels of either...

komuchen
komuchen

@MAD_AI There are some exceptions like them, but crowdfunding for Shroud of Avatar was just sad

krodista
krodista

@komuchen @dandangogogo claymation is an expensive medium. Im not sure they are asking too much since most other claymation games and movies budgets are much higher than what they are asking.

komuchen
komuchen

@FAIL_TR0LL   for point and click games it's short, also money, and also p'n'c rarely have any replay value. But it's clear you never played, otherwise you would know. It's not like dmc, metal gear rising or whatever.

krodista
krodista

@blackace @krodista thats the hope, it would be nice to break 900K and the producers say if that happens that it will only make the game more dynamic!

blackace
blackace

@krodista Yeah, I actually think it's going to cost more then $900K to get this game completed. That's really my only worry. I feel the game will be great in the end.

komuchen
komuchen

@FAIL_TR0LL Sure, it's still is, but I've played a ton of adventure games last year and this one was the only one that did not dissapoint. Still having a little back log, though, so maybe there will be something good. Like Telltale are the only guys who can do it. Also loved Back to the Future

But remember early 90s/2000? There were ton of games, not just one or two. But on the other hand, there is no sierra :(

komuchen
komuchen

@FAIL_TR0LL   Sure, but problem is, if it will be top notch, but adventure games go downhill nowadays.

FAIL_TR0LL
FAIL_TR0LL

@komuchen @FAIL_TR0LL

I have played many point and click adventure games in my life. Replayability be damned if the experience is top notch.
