EA: 'We've made plenty of mistakes'

Chief operating officer Peter Moore says gamers deserve better from publisher, but claims it is not worst company in America.

Electronic Arts is again in the running for The Consumerist's "Worst Company in America" title for 2013, and while COO Peter Moore thinks EA will "win" this title, he has spoken out to defend his company. In a blog entry titled "We Can Do Better," Moore quoted the famous quip: The tallest trees catch the most wind to defend EA's place in the industry.

"Let me cut to the chase: it appears EA is going to 'win.' Like the Yankees, Lakers, and Manchester United, EA is one of those organizations that is defined by both a legacy of success, and a legion of critics," Moore said. "Are we really the 'Worst Company in America?'"

EA faces Ticketmaster in the user-voted tournament's semifinal round.

Moore admitted EA has made "plenty of mistakes," including shutting down game servers too early, shipping games that did not meet expectations, missteps on new pricing models, and, most recently, "severely fumbling" the SimCity launch.

"We owe gamers better performance than this," Moore said. "Some of these complaints are 100 percent legitimate--like all large companies we are not perfect. But others just don't hold water."

Moore listed off a bevy of such claims, the first of which is related to SimCity's always-online requirement. He said many contend this is a form of digital rights management (DRM), but claimed this is not the case. "We can't be any clearer: it's not. Period," Moore said.

The executive also brought up Origin. He said he's heard the claim that there is no room for Origin as a competitor to Steam, but argued that "45 million registered users are proving that wrong." As for free-to-play and microtransactions, Moore said these business models are not a "pox on gaming" as some are suggesting.

"Tens of millions more are playing and loving those games," Moore said.

Lastly, Moore said that in the past year, EA has received "thousands" of emails and physical cards protesting against EA for allowing gamers to create LGBT characters in its games. EA has long been a vocal supporter of LGBT issues.

"That last one is particularly telling. If that's what makes us the worst company, bring it on. Because we're not caving on that," Moore said.

Moore ended his note saying EA is "committed to fixing our mistakes," saying the publisher will continue to factor in community feedback when making decisions.

"So here’s my response to this poll: We can do better. We will do better," Moore said. "But I am damn proud of this company, the people around the globe who work at EA, the games we create, and the people that play them. The tallest trees catch the most wind. At EA we remain proud and unbowed."

"That last one is particularly telling. If that's what makes us the worst company..." Umm, actually, you got it the other way around, mister. Your stance on that social issue, is the only reason why people are even thinkin twice about you bein' the worst gaming company ever.

Peter Moore is the poster child for everything that is wrong with EA, and odds are he'll be the next CEO.  Sad indeed.

Moore sure knows how to suck up to people who are easily fooled and plain stupid. But the pest part of all was when he makes the statement "Tens of millions more are playing and loving those games" as if that's something great... stupidity at its' best.  It's because of Origin that you only have that little consumers Mr. Moore.

EA can't release/publish a decent product, which is why they fail in number of sales. The prices on Origin are also a pure mockery ... which is one more reason for the low number of purchases from consumers. And last but not least - microtransactions ... they claim people love them but in reality the only reason why people pay for microtransactions is because they feel the games LACK content and in order to get the COMPLETE experience of a game they have to pay even MORE than they originally DID.

EA fails to deliver on all fronts and all demands. They lost the consumer-focus which they had years ago. Saying "we can do better" sounds like a brand new 21st century joke.

"EA turns to the community saying: We can do better !" ... yeah, right ...

EA doesn't need to do much to be both profitable and beloved by the fans. Stop rushing out games you are publishing, let the developers work on it for an extra quarter. Stop with the Day 1 DLC, any other DLC is fine with me, season passes included. Encourage your developers to create new IPs rather than regurgitate the same product on a regular basis. Sequels are fine, but having so many Call of Duty games in so few years has crossed the line.

Congratulations EA. You just made history by being "The Worst Company In America" for the 2nd year.

I think he is trying to say "ok we are not very good but there are worse than us" Unfortunately Peter, EA is the worst video game company in my heart and it won't change if you still behave like that. EA is like a plague in video game industry that destroys great video games and their studios. People like me want to buy EA games because they like their studios (like DICE etc.) not because it is an EA game. Deal with it.

Sooo, about EA. When was the last time they didn't f*** up? Seriously, I'm curious when they actually went and did something right. Either way, let's face it.

EA is a great example of what video gaming is heading to nowadays.

Like the ending of ME3.  It's the worst ending of everything including books, movies, video games, etc.  That's how disgustingly bad it was.

Sooo, in other words we've mades a mistake here and there but we're mostly proud of being called the worst company in America because that's due to us supporting LGBT. We're the progressive, kind-hearted people, really. It's those disgusting homophobes that make us look bad.

Seriously, how is it even possible those people are THAT inept when it comes to the communication with their own customers. It seems like they can't even apologize without pissing people off even more.

EA has one shot to prove that they can learn from mistakes... Let's just hope the don't screw it up like Simcity5

Doesn't Origin already have millions of users because EA forces players to sign up for Origin before they can play certain games developed by EA

ddg4005
ddg4005

EA actually has a chance here to prove it can learn from its mistakes.  Microtransactions are not what gamers want: we just want a complete, relatively bug-free game that is a product and not a service.  Moore and the rest can learn a lot from companies such as CD Projekt that are financially successful without nickel and diming gamers.

bloody-hell

The problem is that EA doesn't seem to ever learn from their mistakes or take all that reasonable feedback and change their strategy accordingly.

- Gamers want to just buy games -> EA insists on Origin exclusivity instead of playing nice and also releasing on Steam and other digital distribution platforms (Desura, GMG, GoG, ...)
- Gamers want to buy feature complete products -> EA continues the DLC rape and minitransaction implementations
- Gamers want to play their bought games offline and without fear of the online component "expiring" at some time -> EA continues to force always online DRM and shutting down of online services without offering an alternative
- Gamers want established singleplayer games to remain well done singleplayer games (with optional multiplayer if at all) -> EA forces multiplayer and social online integration features into all games
- Gamers want games to have modding capability to massively improve the longevity and replayability value of their investment -> EA shits on them and locks their products down to not be mod capable
- ...

These are just a few quick thoughts.
EA is for sure far from being the worst company in america (in general), but they are pretty high up in that list but if that voting would be limited to the "worst game publisher worldwide", then EA would (without a question) win that.

Just who are you fans exactly?  Their are fans of your games, but I've never heard anyone utter the words "I love EA".... EA is synonymous with the word "scam".  Every time EA does something I can't help but feel like I'm getting trolled.  Do yourself a favor Mr. Moore and stop talking... stop anyone in your company from talking... never make any public statements ever again because its bad enough you suck at your job, but your aggravating and completely inaccurate comments and fake statistics just make it sooo much worse. Oh and stop for the love of god pretending like Origins is anything but a virus you force us to install to buy your games digitally.  We are not fans of Origins, we are simply not given any other options other than to stop purchasing EA games but your fortunate enough to have a few game developers under your belt worthy of respect but you and the organization that is EA games deserves ZERO credit for these successes, in fact, every single success you have had published under any other publisher would have been an improvement.  EA... you suck.

Quote: Origin as a competitor to Steam, but argued that "45 million registered users are proving that wrong

But i either had to sign up to Origin or post my game back the UK. That doesn't make me a willing voter. It makes me a ticked off gamer.

EA may not be the worst company, but neither are they the best.

I feel dirty saying this but there is NO WAY IN HELL EA is the worst company in America. the make and sell games. No one has ever died or been injured or made sick form one of their products. they have not foreclosed on people houses or "tested" drugs on unsuspecting African villages. So sorry entitled gamers EA are just greedy and arrogant but they wouldn't make the top 100 list of any real worst companies list.

As much as EA has poor business and anti-consumer practices, I still won't understand how they beat out companies like the Bank of America. Always-online DRM and "killing" franchises is nothing compared to what some other corporations have done.

EA should had said "Hey at least we're not worst than Wal-Mart. We don't treat our employees as slaves and force them to work overtime without paid." That would had made them sound far from the worst.

surferosh

no matter what EA says, i wont trust them until we see sustained evidence of change within the company..  with the recent fiasco over Sim City, always on requirements, online passes and possible DLC shove down our throats on a consistent basis, EA have a lot of ground to cover when it comes to gaining gamers' trust.

I'm so biased when it comes to EA. I loved Mirror's Edge but I don't approve that they basically killed the sequel. I liked Bad Company 2 but I don't approve of their new semi yearly release of Battlefield. I love Dead Space 1 & 2, but don't approve of where the series is going. I don't approve of them not taking responsibility for the FIFA12 hijackings and I definitely don't approve of them making online achievements for games they know they're going to shut the servers down for a year later. However, I can't thank them enough for the support they give to the LGBT community. It feels nice when big corporate names recognize you as a human being and don't belittle you and hate you for being different. Based on EA's "It Gets Better" video, you can see they take pride in their employees...whether it's to prove they're diverse in a malicious way or not. I'm so indifferent to EA that I can't say I absolutely HATE them and I can't say I absolutely LOVE them. They're just there...pissing me off, then buttering me up after

@bloody-hell

True that.  What drives me nuts is the arrogance of Moore comments and his "statistics" about how we love them and their are millions of fans.  We love some of the developers they work with and its why they make money, but to claim that EA is some how responsible for "bringing" these titles to us is just infuriating.  Every time they buy up a franchise I cringe because it ALWAYS means that whatever happens, it won't be good and so far with 100% accuracy this has been true about EVERY SINGLE BUYOUT they have ever performed.  The best thing that could happen to the industry right now is for EA to go belly up and have their franchises distributed to other publishers who will actually take care of them, rather than taking care of their wallets.  Just think about what Sid Meier could do with SimCity for example.

packtop

@rising_k

I used to think like that, but after i saw how much stupid peoples exist out there thinking that way when you won a compagny would probably destroy a compagny fast, but i think any compagny should listen to customers and do the best they can to sastisfy the most customers they can.

There's a limit to how much you can screw your customers and once you reach that limit most compagny die soon after.

And i don't think EA is far from that limit, they don't stop doing  bad decision one after another and then always blame others when things don't go well.

@packtop

LOL. To be honest, I thought you were joking because it sounds so ridiculous. Then I checked the article...

As a homophobe, I'm laughing my *** off here. I'm pretty sure it is almost impossible for a group to cause a company to create bad games when they can't even touch it at all whatsoever especially homophobes and whiny madden fans (oh man, what a great joke)! Either way, that article is just proof that they don't intend to take responsibility for their actions which means that there will be more bad games.

Seriously, I'm cringing here so let's just hope they don't get even more pathetic.

@packtop- Gamers need to vote with their wallets.Every time you buy a game you are supporting them. You can say you hate what they do and  what they stand for but when you buy a game anyway you're giving them a stamp of approval.Thats why they do it and why they will continue to do it.

@petez34 @packtop @rising_k Intelligence has little to do with academics and or language skills. For all you know, English is NOT that person's first language.
In any case, he's got a point in that there are far too many idiotic people with no brain filters roaming amongst the interwebs that should be ignored wholly.

Some games should keep to a specific style of development and not follow trends that are popular as the majority would probably demand.
There's a big problem with this in MMOs imo.
Too much trying to make content accessible to and appease the solo and casual crowds when MMO's (imo) are supposed to be played with others and challenge you along the way. Massively Multiplayer is in the title for a reason and to have everything handed to you is detrimental to the MMOs lifespan.
If you don't have the time to play an MMO, and not the sociability to play with others, DONT PLAY AN MMO.

Of course, it's not as simple as just making a game with a specific target audience nowadays. Seems the target audience is slowly becoming everybody..

TL;DR
Stop being a jerk.
