EA unveils NBA Live 07 tracks

Game publisher taps tracks from Gnarls Barkley, Black Eyed Peas with Sergio Mendes, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli, Rhymefest, and others for soundtrack of annual basketball game.

The NBA has long since gone global, with international players among the league's elite and the US national team no longer the favorites in global competition.

So as Electronic Arts unveils the soundtrack for NBA Live 07 today, it's fitting that its soundtrack goes global, as well. Mixed in with EA faves like Lupe Fiasco and Jurassic 5, as well as 2006 breakouts like Gnarls Barkley and Rhymefest from the US, are Finnish rapper Redrama, Canadian beatmaker Ghislain Poirier, and Brazilian hip-hop outfit Braza.

"Our goal was to further define the global cultural phenomenon of hip-hop--and help shape its future--via one of the hottest sports videogame franchises on the street today," EA's worldwide executive of music and marketing Steve Schnur said.

And because the game has "'07" in the title, the soundtrack had to include artists that EA feels will be the face of hip-hop's future, Schnur said. That includes artists like Kanye West protégés Rhymefest and Lupe Fiasco, along with Lady Sovereign, the pint-sized British rapper whose long-delayed Def Jam debut is set to hit stores later this year.

Lupe and Rhymefest also grace the soundtrack of EA rival 2K Sports' NBA 2K7, which was produced by Dan the Automator.

"With NBA Live '07, we knew we wanted the soundtrack to reflect the changing trends and bold innovations of hip-hop while exposing some great new international artists that we feel will be a major part of the genre's future," Schnur said. "We think we've succeeded beyond all expectations."

NBA Live 07 hits stores September 25 for the Xbox 360, Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, PC, and PlayStation Portable. A PlayStation 3 version is also in the works and will be released later this year.

The NBA Live 07 soundtrack:
Army of the Pharaohs - "Gorillas"
Bossman - "Hand Clap"
Braza - "Son Do Braza"
Citty - "Them Ballers"
Damizza feat. Butch Cassidy - "In 2's"
Feezy 350 feat. Shauna K - "Mr. DJ"
Ghislain Poirier - "Mic Diplomat"
Gnarls Barkley - "Crazy"
Jurassic 5 feat. Dave Matthews - "Work It Out"
Lady Sovereign - "A Little Bit of Shh (Adrock Remix)"
Lupe Fiasco - "Kick Push
Dead Prez Presents M-1 - "Til We Get There"
Mark Ronson feat. Alex Greenwald - "Just"
Murs & 9th Wonder - "L.A."
Pigeon John - "Higher"
Raptile - "Neva Eva"
Redrama - "I Don't Know What to Tell You"
Rhymefest - "Some of These Days"
Robert Randolph & The Family Band - "Thrill of It"
Sergio Mendes & The Black Eyed Peas - "Mas Que Nada"
Talib Kweli - "Listen"
Ten Days Till - "Get Them Hands Hi"
The Coup - "My Favorite Mutiny"

looks like this year's soundtrack is going to suck big time!... The songs I've heard from these are all crap ("Crazy"; "Kick Push"; "Mas que nada"...) I wish Stat Quo, Spider Loc & Chamillionaire would be there... Why couldn't they ask Ron Artest to write some song for Live 07, that would be cool IMO.

Why is hip-hop so prevalent in video games? Quadruple platinum selling games like GTA: SA helps. Toss in other million plus sellers of titles like 50 Cent: Bulletproof, Def Jam: Fight for NY, and soon-to-be Saints Row. Hip-hop is what the consumer demands, it's whats on the radio, in our movies, the clothes we wear and our language. For all you metal/rockheads, wait another 4 or 5 years and i'm sure it will come back as well. I mean if Paris Hilton, Lisa Lohan, and Ashley Simpson all sell platinum records, what do you expect? The American consumer is the video game version of a Lemming. I blame MTV and reality shows. BTW: 2K7 is gonna dominate over Live 07 more than Shaquille O'Neal guarding Spud Webb. 'Nuff said.

I love how people are talking crap about Lupe and dead prez but are likely listening to Jibbs or Dem Franchise Boyz while doing it. Get a taste in rap, boys.

For once EA Sports puts not just crappy commercial acts in one of their sports game, but they chose the songs from the good artists that don't fit in at all. Kick, Push in a basketball game? Crazy? What the hell? Thank god 2K Sports nows what songs are appropriate while playing a basketball video game. Another reason NBA 2K > NBA Live.

lupe fiasco is a good rapper, his new cd is filled with sweet jazz/skate rap music and nba live is a pretty fun series, why does everyone hate it? go pistons

Rap is sooooo 90's...... I wonder why marketing people assume that just because the 15-25 crowd is the target audience that they actually want to hear rap music.... who even listens to rap anymore...

i love how people complain and hate the fact basketball games has a dominantly rap soundtrack .hockey has the loudest and most hardcore *ish* on the planet but people that dont like rock wont come out and cry about how much they hate it. grow up people its only music, it wont kill u

WPack911

I just hate the fact that basketball is so rap heavy, I love basketball, I play basketball and I Don't like any rap these days, I like rock. Why can't NBA live's soundtrack be more like madden a nice mix of rap and rock so everybody's happy.

Well people, I have to say that this line-up of music is horrible. These no-name artist are crappy. I think EA needs to focus on game play and then the artist will come. The best soundtrack for this series to me was NBA 2005. You had MC Lyte, The Doc, Tribe Called Quest, etc.....NBA 2006 was horrible to me. I didn't even buy it. Now, I play most of my games on the PC and if the PC gets their act together then maybe they can start making these sports games look like the Xbox 360. That is what all these sports companies need to focus on: next-generation graphics for the PC. People could care less about music, unless the game-play and GRAPHICS are top notch. Peace!!!!!!!!! :)

NinjaFoot

Now if only EA spent as much time trying to make the gameplay worth a crap as they did licensing a bunch of garbage music. Seriously, the last thing I care about in a basketball game is what music is in it. EA needs to find its priorities.

thus proving that basketball and rock n roll just don't mix. For some reason or another ....

fma314 . . . Lupe Fiasco is basically a Mos Def wannabe, but minus all the talent. Okay, I'll stop now.

OMG! There is one song I hate. That must mean that this game is buggy commercialised crap. Oh it's from EA? Well it must be crap. If it wasn't I might have got this but just because I'm stupid and it says EA on the box I'm not getting this!!!1!!1 Seriously just wait to actually play it before bashing it for no reason.

Army of Pharoahs, Jurassic 5, Lupe Fiasco. Nice. And some R&B with Gnarls Barkley... I think the soundtrack of this will be better than the game itself

I was getting scared when I first read the news article, but I chilled when I saw only one track from Rhymefest. That guy is bad.

Lupe Fiasco corny? You got to be kidding me. He's probaly one of the few rappers that raps about real sh*t unlike what you hear on tv like that weak dirty south stuff. Like Game said, they can keep snapping their fingers to try to get some radio play. all the good stuff is underground.

as good as the line up is...it's always gonna get replaced by my own saved playlist from my PC.

" Would you want hip-hop in NHL 07? Course Not!" You obviously haven't been to many hockey games, since they do play hip hop in hockey arenas. Not as much as during basketball games, but it still is part of the set lists in most NHL arenas.

Not bad, but Dan the Automator's set for 2k7 looks better - exclusives and whatnot. As long as I can add custom tracks it doesn't matter much to me.

Well that's just great, now that EA has the unimportant things down, what about a good basketball game now? Remember how to do that EA?

You see people. Basketball and metal do not mix!!! Basketball today is virtually a black dominated sport. Not to be racist and do not quote me as one. Madden on the other hand has rock, metal and rap because football comes from all backgrounds with no really one race more than the other. That is the whole point. Are they sterotyping? No. Hip-Hop culture is very very influenced in the NBA. Would you want hip-hop in NHL 07? Course Not! Would not even mix. So why would they put metal in NBA Live 07? Now Lupe Fiasco should have been in Tony Hawk. But he is not the lamiest rapper. Need to know rap before you talk about it.
