EA to help open Hellgate

Namco Bandai's long-awaited PC action role-playing game gets a copublisher for Europe and North America.

Namco Bandai Games is trying to establish itself as a PC publisher, and although it shipped Mage Knight Apocalypse in September, its first real test will come with the launch of the long-awaited Hellgate: London, an action role-playing game from a number of creators with experience on the Diablo franchise. To help ensure the best possible launch for Hellgate, Namco Bandai has signed an agreement with Electronic Arts to copublish the game, the two companies announced today.

"Hellgate: London is more than just a highly anticipated PC game," Makoto Iwai, senior vice president of Namco Bandai's development group said in a statement. "It is the cornerstone of a franchise and that requires a different approach than the average product."

While EA is being cut in on the action this time, the deal is limited in scope--Namco Bandai will retain the publishing rights to future Hellgate: London projects.

This is not the first time Electronic Arts has helped another company get its game on store shelves. Last July, the company signed a multiyear deal with Valve Software to distribute console and boxed retail versions of the developer's hit PC game Half-Life 2, as well as future Valve products. The company also distributed Koei's Samurai Warriors for the PlayStation 2 in Europe and North America.

Hellgate: London is expected to ship to retail in the first quarter of 2007.

I don't know what to say. EA is actually doing charity work. whoa the world must be coming to an end or something. Hellgate London is going to an awesome game and there is no way EA can screw that up, but i am wondering even if EA doesn't have the right to future sequels to hellgate london games, it is still definately going to cut itself in maximum amount of profit. Come on guys this is EA we are talking about. they are pretty much like the mafia in the gaming world.

If EA touches this game, then i wont buy it. No game is worth to be bought coming from the crappy Ea.

It seems to me like its just the popular thing to hate EA because they are the biggest name in the industry just like it's popular to hate the New York Yankees. EA's got their problems but as long as they put good games on the shelves i dont care. They tell you if theres is gonna be spyware included like they did with BF2142, so at least you'll know. And don't someone read this and say "EA will probably put spyware in a game and not tell you" because they can't, it's illegal. You'll always know what your getting.

As long as they get it on the shelves, my friends.

mrsjasler, I really don't care if you are infatuated with EA and think they are the best thing in the gaming industry. If you want EA's games and spyware in your stocking for christmas, then more power to you. You have your opinion and I have mine. Don't slam me for being wary of EA's offerings because of the garbage they have pulled in the past and are continuing to do. I'm excited about Hellgate but that is tempered by EA's involvement, no matter how trivial that involvement may be. You have told me before mrsjasler that EA doesn't care what I think but I have news for you---I don't care what you think. Have a good day.

I would rather prefer Diablo 3 coming out of this group but my theory is that Hellgate London will work as prototype thus they will see how people react to what they did with the game. That will give them good picture about how they should do Diablo 3. I don't want Blizz, I want the original guys to carry on the Diablo series. I am looking forward to this game. I just feel uncomfortable about EA "helping" to publish things. It is worrying me that they will one day take over these groups. Including my favourite group Valve :(

This game really looks good. It'll probably be as addicting as diablo was back in the old day. Anyone know any good fan sites for this game? Anyone?

Who cares, Flagship is still the only one in charge of actually making the game. Having a big name like EA will surely bring about more attention to the game, which I'm sure it deserves. I'm really looking forward to Hellgate, and not only because its being made by ex-blizz employees. It really looks awesome.

Very soon, EA will start "Operation Massive Take-Over" on both Valve and Namco Bandai.....just u wait.....

IMO Hellgate failed to impress so far, their E3 trailers and demos have been less than average. The only reason people still have hope and anticipation (including me) for this game is because the team making this is made up of ex-Blizzard North emplyees.

I see where you are coming from Vegeta, but just roll with the punches man, this might be too good of a game to pass up. This is only a single title co-publishing deal anyways. I doubt they have much control of the design of the game, including adware. What's the worst that could happen? People(tasteless fools) will buy the bad, moneymaking games anyways so EA will live on, so boycotting them won't do really anything for us.

your too much of a geek VegetaMaelstrom.. you read into something so much and live in such an imaginary world that you have forgotten reality. It seems like its your life long goal to study EA's wrong doing's and write a book about it. Before you go do that please go clean up your bedroom like your mum told you to..

This game was on my top ten list of games coming out but seeing that EA is involved, I am staying away for now. I won't support a company who consistently treats it's fans like garbage and tells them to like it. As some here have mentioned, EA does not appear to have any direct say in what the developers put in the game but who is to say what kind of deal EA and Namco Bandai worked out? Maybe EA convinced Namco Bandai to have spyware... sorry TagDaze, invasive adware... put into the game as part of the copublishing deal. None of us know for certain until the game ships and the word gets out one way or the other.

If Hellgate became Link-dependant or Comrade-dependant or force us to join in another similar EA control system I will decline the buy and play of Hellgate. EA is too big, and based on a continuous stream of expansions and re-stylings of his huge franchises, wich receives annual or semestral ad-ons. I have faith in companys that thake their time -two, three, more years... - to polish his games, an not in clone games year after year. And to Namco: focus on Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur IV, guys...

Some of these peons' comments do confirm my theory that there is no limit to human stupidity. Spyware was a concern in a game like Battlefield 2142, but the only reason was that they DEVELOPED the game i.e. they controlled the graphics, gameplay, and every other feature, that was in the game. However, in this situation, EA is only CO-PUBLISHING. All they do is write the CDs/DVDs, put them in a box, shrink wrap them and ship them off to retailers. Unless EA employees have broken and entered Namco Bandai development studios, and "injected" Hellgate with adware, keyloggers and other assorted goodies, you have nothing to fear :-\

finally some people who have some sense on this site.. cjcr_alexandru.. your right.. the game industry would suffer without EA. As much as many people here want them to die, they won't... they have too much money and power to die.. and some comments from you guys on this site won't change anything.. I can see maybe EA will just buy gamespot and kick all you guys off eventually hahah

If EA disappears I think the game industry will suffer. Badly. So stop saying that EA should die.

@over_18 get a life and stop boycotting. EA haters make me sick. It's not as if people will stop starving to death in Africa if EA does not exist, nor that a cure for cancer or AIDS will be discovered. EA is a publisher just like any other. There is a SLIGHT DIFFERENCE between the games that are MADE by EA and the games that are PUBLISHED. BF2142 does not have any spyware included, it is just a lame blog of an editor of I don't know which online gaming news site who probably hates this company just like you do.

TagDaze
TagDaze

I just told kazie there is no spyware in the games. Are you such an idiot on purpose, over_18? Besides, EA is a business, not charity. They might have some unscrupulous business practices, but all-round, they are very good at what they do - with the exception of patching, that is.

over_18
over_18

plus the only way to stop EA as we all no is to stop buying their products all together.....but thats impossible cuase their too many noobs coming onto the markert who will buy any thing that looks good. thats not to mention all the noobs that are already on the market. so i guess the few of us (thats like 3000 idk cuase i dont have the resources for a real number) will just sit back and watch the monster that is EA grow and grow until it has that spyware on EVERY game out in the future.

over_18
over_18

o god this game just might be ruined....EA is "helping" cuasse they no ppl dont like them so ppl wont buy it as much....good plan EA first ur games now games that shouldnt belong to you, EA is gonna be that big brother that screws up ne thing that was meant to be good.

Lost2017
Lost2017

This whole thing probably means that EA is trying to help give Flagship the resources and exposure it need so the game can sell, Namco hasn't really released anything in the p.c market yet besides tabletop adaptations. And just because Hellgate Isn't from blizzard I think this is good news because it'll get the shelf space and magazine and adtime it deserves either that or EA screws it up you'll just have to wait and see.

I bought HL2 and HL2ep1 from STEAM just so EA dident get a cent from me, ill buy hellgate from direct2drive if i dont have to pay EA, but if i hear that they put anything EA-ish in hellgate i wont bother.

There is no spyware in Battlefield, kazie. Also, you don't know what is good or not until you have actually touched it. Seize your horrible anti-EA babbling.

kaziechameleon

EA, thanks to their greedy antics, has made themselves the new starforce, people like my self and my friends see the way EA is working the industry and manipulating/missleading it's consumer base as a horrible trend, and the fact that they are the largest game company in the world doesn't help. who will stop them and how, i will start by speeking with my dollar, i won't buy any EA game with spy ware, ala BF2142, and i'll steer away from buying stuff they halve touched, now hellgate london might not be effected by EA, if not, i'll get it. but i'm gonna be extra cautious from now on.

kaziechameleon
kaziechameleon

yeah i really resent EA, especially the spyware that hellgate will ship with thanks to them. i know, EA isn't touching the game other than fro distribution, but every penny that goes to those corrupt b@$T@rds makes me want to buy any thing they touch less and less. maybe someday EA will die, and hopefully not be replaced, and gameing will be good, and madden will evolve, and C&C will get good agian, and a good NFS will come out, i wiat for that day.

While I'm definitely looking forward to Hellgate, it does have me worried that EA is now involved. As far as history has shown with EA games, some of them are merely used for advertisement purposes only (read: Global Operations).
