EA throws another uppercut

Publisher introduces FaceBreaker, an arcade-style Fight Night counterpart featuring "real-time facial deformation."

by

Electronic Arts has discovered the popularity of wanton destruction with the success of its Burnout series of crash-based racing games. Now it's going to find out if the obliteration of a human face holds as much appeal for gamers as a pinwheeling sports car.

He's no King Hippo.

The publisher today announced its newest intellectual property, FaceBreaker. An arcade-style take on boxing, FaceBreaker will be developed by the same team behind its other pugilism property, the Fight Night series. Until recently, that team was based at EA Chicago.

While no real-life, licenced boxers have been revealed so far, two characters have been: Romeo, a "Latin lover known for his pelvic thrusts," and Molotov, "an oversized Russian demolitions expert with a penchant for fighting dirty."

For gamers who want to see what their deformed faces may look like without going through the effort in real life, FaceBreaker will support photo uploads. The game will be available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii sometime in 2008. More details will be available on FaceBreaker's official Web site starting February 1.

My first thought was that this was the mysterious Ready 2 Rumble sequel AKI (now Syn Sophia) was supposed to be working on. Bummer. :P

Yeah, I agree with gwilo007. This game won't sell like Fight Night 3. I believe this game belongs in an arcade, not a console. If it's too expensive, I'm not buying because it doesn't look all that interesting.

Totally ready to play this. As fun as Fight Night Round 3 was, it's about time we got a new arcade-style boxing game in the vein of greats like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and Ready 2 Rumble.

IM sure they will come out with FN4, its just too easy to slap a few new features on the same game and add a year and make oodles of $$ (madden). I agree with Gameboy2k, sports games should be simpler. I used to love hockey and soccer games, now they are just ridiculous and I dont even want to play them. They need to get back to the basics and keep it simple and fun. Also the more I think about it the better an Arena game sounds, if one shows up I expect royalties!! How cool would it be to box aliens!!

Garbage!! they disbanded the chicago Studio that made a Realistic Boxing Simulation game, and replaced it with a no-name cartoon game, EA Sucks!!! I want Fight Night round 4 not this Crap!!

Sounds interesting, but hopefully this won't push FNR4 back too far. This kinda reminded me of Ready 2 Rumble - lots of fun with that one on the DC. I just wish someone would put out a great boxing game for the Wii that makes excellent use of the motion controls. I believe Victorious Boxers and Showtime have already failed. Don't know if that new Don King game will make much use of the Wiimotes.

vash your WAY off. Look closer to puchout than the total crap game that was B&B.

On that note look cool.

Man, I'm still waiting for a proper sequel for Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!!. Midway attempted to recreate it with Ready 2 Rumble, but it just didn't have that same charm.

EA is really taking the cartoony TF2 style and running with it. First Battlefield Heroes and now this.

Sweet another craptacular game that the masses (i.e. 95% of gamespot audience) will gobble up.

Shame that there wont be a new FIght Night anytime soon. A bigger shame the the only realistic boxing game has Don King's unholy name all over it. I guess this will have to do. It has some promise so far. I like the idea of camera support. Gives me a reason to by a Playstation Eye.

Sounds just like Ready 2 Rumble. I love how people repackage crap and try to sell it like it's brand-new. I have a great idea for a game..."a plumber and his plumber brother are cleaning some giant pipes one day when they are magically thrust into a crazy, cartoon world where a giant, evil half turtle half lizard thing has captured this princess or queen character and now the plumbers have to save her. Did I mention they are Itallian? I know, I know that doesn't realy matter, but I developed back story for them." Give me a break.

i love it EA held out on doing wonky style in there games till valve and Mario reminded them people like imaginative game design. now it feels manufactured, like EA is the new Disney of video games.

looking foward to this jsut to play a new boxing game. anything with don king jsut does not appeal to me. when is fight night coming out EA?

afilgueirasjr

I guess with no new big named boxers why make a new Fight Night they probally ran out of ideas for the game but this game you know will be good because its the team (minus the lead developer) from fight night. I might need to buy or rent this game for the Wii and 360 the Wii controls should be better than any boxing game out there because anything less would be a HUGE disappointment

nice, but they could freaking release fnr4 with better boxers. seems like they can't put a decent line up toegether without excluding previous boxers that are great

"Cool Idea. What happened to all the great ideas. Here are a few Ideas I have for games." "1. A 3rd person perspective transformer and/or gundam game, with tight controls. They can make the game linear, meaning one way to go... therefore There wont be any camera angles to fuss with. Think of Space Harrier (ON STEROOOOOIDS). Make it fast... make it move like a driving racing Game. Easier to control.. Again, Linear. Remember Panzar Dragoon Orta? That was a great game. Why cant we have that again? And stop making 10,000 combo moves to confuse us." "2. IF you gonna make a fighting Game, make it 2d and realistic (They did it with Pit fighter, right?) The problem with these fighting games is that they make them to 3dish and dont concentrate on tight control. Lets get back to the basics. These games had tons of replay value and we now have online playback." 3. Any Sports game. Again... Stop giving us 10000 controls to remember. I'm sick of that. You have to be a coach just to play any of these games anymore. What happened to Double Dribble, Blades of Steel, Tecmo Bowl? Anyone here me? Gaaaaaaaaaaaah "4. Prince of Persia needs to be in this Video Game Era. Please let this be coming soon." "5. Limit 2 FPS per every 6 months. As soon as I get one FPS, another is on it's tail... I think we got more than enough. Lets get some innovative ideas cooking again. Lets go back to the basics."

@Gameboy2k as per your request for side scrollers in 3d, i believe that the re-release of Bionic Commando for the PSN is exactly what you were talking about/ you should check it out it looks great!

I'm interested. REAL boxing is in absolute shambles right now, so it makes sense to take a cue from Ring King and Punch Out!. I see people on here hammering EA- but Fight Night simply didn't sell well. It will be nice to have a 2K "realistic" boxing game and an EA alternative that is completely different.

Gameboy2k
Gameboy2k

The video game industry sucks. The one time they break away from the 'first-person perspective' format, they put out this Bull *Sugar*. You know what they should do? Make side scroller video games again.... With a main character who has power ups... and make the graphics pop out in 3d. Sort of like Contra on steroids. The Music Industry and the Video Game industry must have the same executives... because they both are Dead. RIP good gaming ideas. All the great games that were/could be made are in heaven. :(

first thing i thought of when i seen this, was Ready 2 Rumble boxing. the funny looken characters. so just buy the name from midway because they need the money (games like blacksite and crusin doesnt bring food to the table) and EA can rename the game ready 2 rumble round three.

Fight NIght was a great visual game, but after about an hour I didnt want to play it ever again. Id much rather have been playing Punch Out on Nintendo. I found the game too realistic and boring, kinda like real boxing. I really dont like sim games anyway I guess though. I think this has potential, but I probably will end up skipping it. They should make an Arena game, that 80's movie where the guy boxes aliens, that would be sweet.

I'm not sure about this one. It looks like they could do alot with it but I want it to have a solid boxing gameplay. I'll keep following this one.
