EA Sports unveils 'trainer' mode for Wii games

'Family play' will allow kids and gaming newbies to play various EA Sports titles using just the Wii Remote.

The Wii's intuitive controller has been widely heralded as one of the reasons behind the success of Nintendo's latest console and its appeal to gamers and non-gamers alike. However, Electronic Arts has decided that even this control system might be too complex for some, and has unveiled a "Family Play" system.

Upcoming titles Madden NFL 08, NBA Live 08, and FIFA 08 will allow players entering a contest to choose between two play modes in the Wii versions: Advanced or Family. Advanced will give gamers complete control over all aspects of play, whereas the Family mode will just allow the gamer to control key actions, such as shooting, passing, snapping, and throwing.

Advanced Play will utilise both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk controllers, and Family Play uses just the Wii Remote. In a statement, EA said, "It's like having an invisible helper on your team. Plus, as novice players gain confidence in their ability, they can gradually begin to use Advanced controls simply by plugging in the Nunchuk."

Two steps forward one step back! What in the heck, they've turned EA games into Dragons Lair. If this casual trend continues they are going to alianate their market, or the Wii will turn gaming into one huge and boring mini-game. Hopefully this will have the SouthPark Chipokeman effect and dev's will come to their senses and put casual gaming where it belongs....the Casino

I fail to see what is innovative about renaming the "Difficulty Setting", there have been games around for years where if you played on Easy you only had to worry about 1 or 2 game elements, which became 3 or 4 game elements on Normal amd added 2 or 3 other elements on Hard. All EA have done here is change the name of an already fairly standard feature, no big deal.

Oh and to comment on the report. I think it is an excellent idea. Looks like EA are really trying for once.

I think the addition of "Family Play" mode is an excellent idea. Wii Sports is essentially a sports title with this system installed, which is why family members and people who never played video games can pick up. And by having this system in other EA sports titles, it will entice Wii Sports-loving gamers to play along with the hardcore gamers. I for one will definitely buy Madden and NBA 2008, and I will consider buying FIFA as well.

Actually everyone is new to the Wii controls since it is a new way to play so it can be useful for all. Plus it will attract casuals who probably don't consider sports games because they think they games are too hard to play.

Can you imagine if you could strap on the controller to your leg for FIFA 08 using the motion sensoring?

Well that is what Nintendo wanted the Wii to be for right? To cater to the casual gamer. Good thing this will be optional though. Too simple is never good.

EA wants to monopolize sports games , which hurts us gamers. BOYCOTT EA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This makes me want to get a Wii. This is an amazing development, and thanks to EA for implementing something new and fresh.

Well done EA. I NEVER thought I would say this but I might be picking up Madden this year for Wii instead of All-Pro Football for 360! I mean online finally and I'm assuming they're adding most everything the other console versions get like improved animations.

Great idea. I got a 3 1/2 year old little girl and she loves Wario Ware and Mario Party 8. Shes great at Wario Ware but the mini games on Mario Party area bit too much for her. With a little help liek this new system, she would be able to pick it up even faster. I know its only for EA games now but the idea has potential for all games. Come on guys, anything that makes it easier for new gamers so we dont lose them caus ethey get frustrated is good for gaming. We need all the gamers we can get. With that being said....Nintendo rocks!!!

why cant they just develop controls that are straight forward and easy to figure out and learn? hm? no? EA? are you there? thats the WHOLE IDEA OF THE WII. you dont have to memorize what button does what, you just flick it around like you're actually doing the moves- passing, throwing, hitting, etc. Just develop a better recognition system into your games and it'll be awesome. you didn't mess up on SSX Blur- that was great once you learn how to draw the pictures in the air... why must you handicap your games like this?! super lame. NOOB mode indeed. i veto.

"i wonder if this game will be any good? since its a bunch of EA sports games packed into one game, idk it'll probly be good."-dell900 Erm, It's not a compilation of sports like wii sports , each one is a separate game. They are EA's 2008 editions of those sports franchises. Also I don't really mind (or care for that matter) that they're doing the family mode but I can't help but think that if the normal controls are too complex for the avereage person then they're not doing their job , remember the whole intuative gameplay concept.

AngelCage

hum, GREATEST IDEA EVER!!!!! But, why a intuitive game in the most intuitive system, with the intuitive controller for excellence needs a Control Trainer mode???? Where are all the natural-and-intuitive crap then???? Why a player could need a trainer for learn how to shake a control?

i think this is a good idea. this is the only way to keep the intrest of people who are just now likeing video games. a world where adults aren't afraid of video games and computers is a better world if you ask me.

I like this idea. It smart in there part. It's almost like changing the comp. diffculity setting. Still must see how it works out though. The faimly mode would probally be like the wii sports games, simple and easy.

excellent idea! too often I find that family members feel left out of a game because they are too involved, but this opens the gate for everyone to enjoy a game on the most basic level. awesome move, EA.

This a good idea because of the older crowd that cant really get a hold on even something as simple as the wiimote.

Wow!! Wiimote too complex?? what does EA think?? That the Wii is for morons or something?? How come waggle your hand could be complex?? idiots!!

iamthespd

Excellent idea. Even as an experienced gamer, I thoroughly enjoyed the simpler controls of Wii Sports. I was really hoping that The Bigs had offered simpler controls like in Wii Baseball, because that's where the fun really is: actually throwing a pitch or actually swinging the bat. If I wanted the complex controls, I'd pick the game up on another system. With the Wii, I want a simple, innovative, and fun control scheme.

Wow, that's just awesome! Hopefully this move by EA will pave the way for other third party developers to use the Wii's functionality as a medium to get all kinds of new people into gaming. Now I'm definatly picking up NBA Live 08, and possibly the other two.

I second Darth Revan 666's suggestion that a simplified "family" mode be adopted for all platforms. I'm by no means a gaming newbie, and rarely if ever have a problem getting into most games (action, platform, puzzle, etc.), but time and again the learning curve required to get going with most sports games, and particularly the EA titles, stops me in my tracks. A simplified difficulty level, with the option to ease into the full mode, would be just the ticket to get me (and I suspect I'm far from alone here) to consider purchasing more sports titles.

EA is one third party that is really exploring what the Wii can do.

This is a good idea and will help games appear simpler and appeal to a wider audience. At least they are giving the option and not just taking out normal, complex controls. But still, i cant help but feel this dumbs things down so much, just so some idiot can have his hand help all the way to the end zone.

Yea i have to agree, allthough its obviously implemented to grab at a wider audience, any mechanic that allows people to "get better" at games passivly like this, is a great idea.

This sounds like a great idea, even if it's just trying to appeal to a wider audience.

Sweet. I hope they do a baseball game with these features as well.
