EA Sports MMA: New Roster Additions, Could Lashley/Walker Be Far Behind?

EA Sports announced the latest batch of roster additions to its upcoming mixed martial arts game.

by

Now that Strikeforce has been announced as a premier league in EA Sports' upcoming mixed martial arts game, EA Sports MMA, the stream of roster additions have become a bit more predictable. Consider today's most recent announcement of seven new fighters who will lend their likenesses and fighting styles to the game, all of whom will be involved in this Saturday's Strikeforce: Evolution event in San Jose, CA:

- Cung Le
- Scott Smith
- Matt Lindland
- Ronaldo Souza
- Gilbert Melendez
- Josh Thomson
- Robbie Lawler

All of the above fighters will be fighting on this Saturday's card (Le vs. Smith, Lindland vs. Souza, Melendez vs. Thomson). Robbie Lawler will be fighting Trevor Prangley, who has not yet been announced for the game.

There's more to EA Sports' MMA roster than Fedor.

Considering the Strikeforce-heavy nature of this most recent announcement (as well as the rest of the game's roster), it doesn't seem to be that big of a stretch to imagine that some of the big names from Strikeforce's next promotion--Strikeforce: Miami on January 30, 2010--might make their way into the game as well. Signing the likes of Nick Diaz, Bobby Lashley, or even former college football great Herschel Walker--all of whom have been announced to be fighting at the event--would be a coup for the game's roster. I know I wouldn't mind punching Herschel Walker a few hundred times.

Strikeforce is the only currently announced league tied to EA Sports MMA, and more could (and presumably will) be added in the future. In fact, it seems like the developers are still actively working on adding other promotions and their subsequent regulations to the game. Speaking in the EA Sports MMA live chat announcing today's roster additions, poster EA_Rocky (Hedrick Rivero, a designer on the game) had this to say:

"Just to clarify we're EXPLORING other rule sets. Those are the things available to us because we're not limited by a certain license…ahem."

Gee, I wonder who that could be aimed at?

roronoa_gaara19, the company that owns the UFC is the same one that owns the WEC, so Urijah Faber and the rest of the WEC wont be in any EA games. They'll probably be in the UFC game soon enough.

WTF is that EA guy taking a shot at the UFC for? It's their own damn fault that the UFC had to go to THQ, but I guess EA's memory isn't all that great, then again, I'd probably try to forget telling an organization they wouldn't sell only to see my rival make MILLIONS on that same organization.

Lets hope its not as bad as the clunky piece of crap THQ gave us, I trust EA on this one, I'm expecting a nice smooth and realistic sim.

Hopefully this game is actually good unlike UFC Undisputed..

It all just as real as wrestling.

It is all about the controls. I hated the ground controls in UFC but everything else was great. Who can make the better control scheme is the winner in my book, we all know the graphics will be there.

@Aquilam I guess you buy into the whole media hype.... And ooh trust me UFC have great sponsoring of their fighters making them look better than they are... I mean even i bought into it at first but face it the roster in UFC isnt as great as you're trying to make it out as... End of the day its not the roster what makes a game great its the gameplay what makes a game great im sick of materialistic gamers moaning about graphics and tiny little things in my opinion you arent real gamers.

EA should add some legends to the game, like Don Frye.

I don't think Dan Henderson will be in the game. UFC has a lifetime license on their fighters for gaming purposes I believe. I'm not sure of the exact details, but it's what I think I read awhile back.

maybe they'll be able to get Dan Henderson into the game, seeing as how he was strong armed from the ufc

ea couldnt take over thq so they had to make there own ufc kind of game huh lol, lets see if they can shine with this one theyre pretty good at taking out there competitors for example (tony hawk series).....

you cant blame the roster on anyone but EA. they laughed in dana white's face when he tried to get the game made who's laughing now? will be no competition with UFC. The difference in roster would be like someone passing up a madden game for arena football

It still hurts the game when the UFC roster isn't in it (since that is the most recognized fighters worldwide). I still think it might be interesting if they could get Dream and Sengoku to sign for the game.

I hope they dont flood us with advertisements like fight night with each on one side of the screen.

As long as Fedor has the overhand right, and they get Marius Zaromskis and his vicious headkicks in there somehow, I'm happy.

This game is gonna have a LACKLUSTER roster. They have nowhere near the fighters of the UFC. Maybe the game will be better, but the roster most definitely will not. UFC has the best fighters minus Fedor, Mousassi, and Aoki.

I could see DREAM and maybe Bellator as other "leagues", but I don't know that there are any other promotions that are close to the level of Strikeforce for them to add. Also, I wonder if they will have Dan Henderson in the game - he was in the last UFC game and presumbly the UFC could own the rights to his likeness, but now that he has signed with Strikeforce who knows?
