EA resurrecting Desert Strike series?

Publisher files pair of trademark applications suggesting long-dormant series may return.

Electronic Arts has filed two new trademark applications that suggest the publisher may be planning to resurrect its long-dormant Desert Strike series.

As spotted by Fusible, EA filed a pair of trademark applications with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) for "Desert Strike" on November 25.

Both applications cover "computer game software," though no other details are provided. They are registered to EA's headquarters in Redwood City, California. A representative for the company told GameSpot, "Nothing to announce today."

The Desert Strike helicopter-themed shoot 'em up series first debuted in the early 1990s and numerous sequels followed. The most recent entry was 1997's original PlayStation game Nuclear Strike.

The new Desert Strike trademark applications do not necessarily signal the return of the series, as EA may only be covering its bases.

I remember having several all nighters with Desert Strike, but never did beat it though as I just rented it a couple of times. Damn fun game, though. And I also remember playing Jungle Strike, just not as much as Desert Strike.

I almost read Desert Storm. The Conflict games.

I prefer digital-only remakes of Desert/Jungle/Urban/Soviet/Nuclear Strike with updated graphics on PS4/Vita (but don't touch gameplay and isometric perspective! )

Not the first time EA has mentioned bringing back Stirke. They mentioned bringing back Strike & Road Rash about 7-8 years ago, and nothing materialzed. So, I expect sod all to happen with this recent muttering. EA don't give a shit about the franchises that made them, hell they've already ruined most of them. They only care about the microtransaction laden dudebro crap that they sell half finished these days so morons buy the overpriced missing content as DLC.

I played this on the Amiga. I also remember being terribly excited for Jungle Strike to be released (oh yes, back then it was the same story of computers having to wait months for their ports from consoles)

This is a SEGA exclusive!! Why is SEGA letting this go? if EA makes it, the game will be ruined!!

Desert Strike on the SNES was great! I also remember getting Jungle Strike (I think that was the name) one year for Christmas as a kid. I LOVED those games! It'd be neat to see a high graphics remake.

LOVED  this game on the Sega genesis console. Very interested in seeing an updated version of this. Bigger maps more missions, BUT SAME GAMEPLAY.

Maybe something good comes from this... At least Battlefield 4 guarantees that they will not turn it into a FPS... (will NEVER forgive EA for syndicate)

This may well be a ploy to rope the old school gamers in to being a tad more EA tolerant again? I have often wondered why they haven't developed a modern day Road Rash because if ever there was a Sega Megadrive era game made for online multi player then surely this was it! Even I would go against my principles and drop my self imposed refusal of all things EA to buy it. To me Desert Strike and Road Rash were the 2 defining games of that generation, by a country mile.

Please just sell this another publisher.... i just don't believe in them anymore. Just don't ruin my childhood.

Doesn't Battlefield already have chopper gameplay? What could EA bring to the table?

Im sort of on the fence about this. I still play the sega emulations of Desert Strike, Urban Strike and Jungle Strike. Love them, But not sure how they would work in this gaming age. Dont want a in the cockpit Heli Sim. Would be nice it they just HDfied the old games making them sort of arcade games for $10 cant see how a full AAA make over would bring back the same passion for the older ones.

I loved the Strike series.. Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike ruled.. however Im not sure if id bothered to go there again.. it would want to be a major evolution in many ways to pull me in.

Played Desert Strike on Mega Drive when it first came out.. was one of the best experiences I remember gaming.. admittedly I have had quite a few of those :P

Are you going to get Mike Poseign back? If not colour me unenthused.

(Also totally predicting this will be made into a FPS some how).

EA is like a necromancer, re-animating peacefully sleeping IPs and turning them into shambling shell of their former shelves, spitting dlc and microtransactions in our faces.

So what? EA brought this game from the depth just to ruin the game as well as our memories of the once good game?

on an unrelated note, Desert Strike is also an amazing Starcraft II custom game

Oh man I remember this series, this was one of my favorite games back when I was a kid playing on my Uncle's Sega Genesis!  Some of the more modernized reboots were 'meh' but the originals on the Genesis, I put a lot of time into those back then.  :)

@raddys2001 You must mean Road Rash? If that is so, I agree. They have kept Need for Speed going all these years why not Road Rash. I live that series. Just think of what they can do with the power of systems they have now.

@OrdosAlpha Indeed.

Battlefield: Ruined.

System Shock: Dead

Sims: Whored.

SimCity: Ruined.

Dead Space: Prematurely killed due to them ruining it.

C and C: Didn't make it but they bought Westwood and ruined them.

Ruined Bullfrog. I mean what does EA have left anymore besides just ruining Battlefield.

@gino_pachino They'll probably add micro-transactions. $5 for anti-tank rockets. $2 for extra fuel.

@inspectercoley I played Soviet Strike on the PSX. Loved it as did my brother. I still remember when you roll in on the POW camp in the beginning and someone in it yells "incoming!!!" in a really dumb voice lmao. War never changes!

chasloyal

@anakvunky Oh my goodness, I was thinking exactly what you said as I was reading this article before checking the comments! Apart from the childhood bit as I was probably already around 20 when Desert Strike came out, I would have such a dilemma were they to do anything as I have boycott everything EA for a couple of years now.

@max-hit but not like the other big mega drive remake Flashback.

@jonmar @inspectercoleyWas brilliant on the mission where you had to escort the drunk Boris Yeltsin while he was crashing into everything and trying not to get him killed.

@chasloyal @anakvunky Actually there is a game resemble Strike series in Steam, Thunder Wolves, it's an indie game. I remember it being featured in gamespot before, you can check it out.
