EA renews Unreal deal

Megapublisher extends its engine licensing agreement with Epic Games for a spate of titles currently in development.

by

Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 has been used in a wide variety of top-tier games, including Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3. The technology has also been the backbone of many other titles including Lost Odyssey, Stranglehold, BioShock, and the forthcoming Too Human. The most recent version of the engine was shown off during Microsoft's keynote address at the 2008 Game Developers Conference.

Electronic Arts has also been using the popular engine in such multiplatform titles Medal of Honor Airborne and Army of Two. Now, according to Epic, the publisher wants to expand its licensing agreement--first signed in 2006--to cover "more than five" games currently in development. As with previous titles, the Unreal Engine 3 toolset will be used alongside EA's own proprietary development technology.

Neither EA nor Epic named any specific titles covered by the UE3 licensing extension. However, it's worth noting that Mass Effect, the role-playing game from now-EA-owned studio BioWare, is based on the engine. The Edmonton, Alberta-based studio has repeatedly said that it is planning at least one sequel to the critically acclaimed and commercially successful title, which would presumably use the same technology.

The visuals of Mass Effect were beautiful and it really showed why the Unreal Engine is the best game engine out there. I'm glad it's going to be used in more games, I'm excited to see what can be achieved with it. I also like Valve's Source Engine a lot.

I think the 'UE' is fantastic, having seen the GOW2 tech demo i was blown away, just goes to show that it takes a good developer to unlock your consoles potential, and just when people were beginning to knock the 360 for "reaching its full potential", well its a long way from that!! I also love Valve's Source engine, the Mercury Engine (Jericho) was also very good.

Well nutzelfutz the thing is that they are always improving the Unreal Engine and the problems that you have in previous games they will fix in games in the future. I understand what you are getting at, their were times where I noticed texture issues in Gears of War and Bioshock but they were not so bad that it drew me away from the gameplay and the other great things about both games. Bioshock was not acclaimed by critics and gamers based mainly on graphics and such I think what made it game of the year last year is its blend of well placed horror and narrative. Gears of War on the other hand they focused mainly on the co-op gameplay, the campaign was fun and multiplayer was terrific, of course graphics are an important key in video games but don't let a few texture problems make you put the game down and not play it because I think the Unreal Engine is doing a terrific job and it is improving with every game that runs off of it.

Excellent, looks like we will enjoy more games, possible like gears of war 2 for pc and who knows may be medal of honor series will follow up as well. But one thing is for sure the engine is good and up to high end performance, and game development on this engine will definitely come out.

This is great news for gamers. Unreal Engine is top in the market and this means the potential of having good games is there as long as the developer can take advantage of it's power.

Mass effect rocks that is seriously the best role playing game hands down. I really can't wait for 2 and 3 yah the texturing would fade in but hey it could of been worse and they will fix it on 2 and 3 unless they start suffering from EAism that nastey virus that seems to make you repetitivly suck eggs and stop all creativity and ruins the portion of the brain that spawns imagination. So far doctors havent been able to find a cure for EAism, we need research people and a cure soon. My god if we don't get working on a cure think about the legacy we will be leaving our children. Seriously EAism is a problem that will only grow if left unchecked.

@ godzillavskong: Yup, the Unreal 3 engine has serious issues with textures. Mass Effect is godawful, Bioshock has more than enough problems, and even in Epics own Gears of War, lots of textures don't load properly. Ever taken a closer look at the trees or houses in GoW, or the jukeboxes and foliage in Bioshock? And let's not forget the awesome spawn point in GoW where you are dropped in front of a large wooden door which starts as a brown blob and, over the course of around 10 to 15 seconds, magically transforms into an intricate piece of woodwork... The problem IMO is that, contrary to old games, every tiny can on the ground gets multiple textures. Sure, it looks better, but only if it actually WORKS. It would probably be better to focus on a stable frame rate and playability in general instead of looks. OK, they're old, but I never was annoyed by low-res textures like those in Perfect Dark or RtCW, simply because they did the job.

Here's a question, why doesn't gamespot stop reporting tiny bits of info about EA? Oh yeah, cause then no one would click on their webpage.

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/04/04/bioware-why-we-are-making-mass-effect-as-a-trilogy/ According to this article from April 4th it's still planned as a trilogy. I've no idea why they say they only have one sequel planned here when Bioware's been saying it's a trilogy since day one and hasn't said anything to suggest other wise. I'd be really pissed if ME3 gets canceled but i don't see why EA wouldn't allow Bioware to complete the trilogy when they've said they are commited to the franchise so it wouldn't make sense to drop one of their best selling titles after one sequel.

urrg im worried ea may *$@% it up like all the other games they have. good engine, but i liked bioware the way they did it ea ruins everything it gets its hands on. they do it to this and i may just go murder some people and blow my brains out...(hypothetically speaking of course)

Has anyone else noticed the texture pop-up with certain unreal engine games? My copies of Mass Effect and Bioshock both seem to have graphical texture popups. They tend to normally happen in bioshock when I first boot the game up.In Mass Effect they pop up through out the whole game. It would be nice to see Infinity Ward license out the game engine they used in COD4. I wish more developers would just create their own, but I understand that its financially better to use a already established game engine. I also am interested in seeing how well the Frostbite engine from EA looks as soon as Battlefield Bad Company comes out. Eidos is also working on a Avalanche game engine for Just Cause 2 that looks 10 x better than the original Just Cause.

You got alot of games that uses the UE3 that arent FPS games. Lost Odessey and Mass Effect. You got some more comming as: Elvon, TNA: Impact, The Last Remnant and more. Just check the list of games that uses the UE3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal_Engine_games

Maybe they should use that engine on a different genre of game other than first person shooters. So far it's been only one RPG and the rest are FPS. No matter how many FPS games they make, it won't be as popular as the top tiers ones like Unreal tournament, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike. Instead of making new titles too, they should concentrate on the quality of game series' they release yearly such as Madden, Need for Speed, etc. And stop "UPDATING" them.

Jedited255, Everyone already knew about the "Bring Down the Sky" DLC. I was talking about the next DLC (there are supposed to be a few more of them), and I just want them to release some details about the future DLC just to get our mouths watering. "at least one sequel" doesn't look like a typo at all. So this is totally a buzz killing article. Got to love the Unreal Engine. Did you see the demo of it? Gears of War 2 is going to be sick. If Mass Effect 2 uses the updated Unreal Engine, that game is also going to be sick.

hmm i could see why EA are signin deals new IP''s and old IP's alike will get benefits from UE3 possibly Skate 2 will use this engine? who know just speculation. but its a good all round engine and has been used in nearly every genre and people say ohh it looks like renderware all over again it does but if UT went under EA label there would be much more advertisement in UT prolly like burnout and the franchise that was not as well known might redeem itself as long as EA didnt push EPIC for releases it would be beneficial in some ways and not in others.

@Jedited225 I agree. I was hoping they'd stick to the "trilogy" plan, too. But the mega-publishers and high priced propietary hardware makers have created a beast they can't control anymore. I'd say "it serves them right", if it weren't for the negatives that we (gamers) are going to have to tolerate.

Jedited255
Jedited255

@cleanslate, they just release the Bring Down the Sky content pack just last month, no word on future DLC so ya just gotta be patient. I'm hoping Bioware reveals some of their plans for DLC along with a snazzy ME2 trailer at E3. I'm think the "atleast one sequel" is a typo by GS since i'm pretty sure ME is still planned as a trilogy. EA's commited to selling the franchise so i don't see why they would drop it after the first sequel.

I thought Mass Effect was supposed to be a trilogy, and now they are talking about only one sequel! That's bogus! When are they going to come out with the new DLC. That's all the news I want to hear on Mass Effect, either new DLC or news on ME2.

nate1222

I think console gaming needs to commercially die down. Then we can get rid of greedy mega publishers and 'hopefully' devs will start to cater to actual GAMERS. As opposed to Madden and Halo buffs.

I'm starting to get sick of the letters "EA". I swear, I wont buy any games developed by them ever again. They lack ideas, they have no imaginiation, no innovation, no creativity and yet they earn so much. People, please stop buying their super-hyped, low-grade games. You are only going to force out the true genius' of the industry since they love buying out other rising game-development companies. Think!

chief_527, Yeah, last i heard and it was from GameSpot, Silicon Knights scrapped using the unreal Engine do to Software tool kit issues and other such things, last i know...Epic and Silicon Knights were in the midst of a lawsuit over that developers kit issues and i think support for the kit as well. Wasn't Silicon Knights using their own Engine for Too Human now?

RaiKageRyu

Too Human's engine is still considered Unreal's. It's heavily modified, but they based it on Unreal.
