EA pulls online play for older games

A series of older, mainly sports titles will no longer be playable online from September on.

Electronic Arts has done some spring cleaning of its online servers and will be shutting down online play for a number of its older titles.

The company statement reads, "You may continue to play the games online up until these dates, but certain community programs may begin to close down prior to the shutdown dates."

Games facing the chop include FIFA Soccer 06, Madden NFL 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, and NFL Head Coach.

Why they not suporting there 06 360 online games.360 is only a few years old and EA wants to drop the suport for the online servers on the 360.Its understanable on the xbox and ps2 but commonthe 360 is still new.I bought Tiger Woods 06 only to fine out there is no online.....and you can buy NBA Live 06 AT BEST BUY FOR 20.00 DOLLERS what the..........

Slim02 : you are wrong..i can log into live right now and play NFL 2k5 online..not sure about any of the other titles though

Just one of the countless reasons that every sports title in my gaming library has the 2K Sports logo. Good luck to Peter Moore in his new role at EA Sports because turning this mentality around should be his first task.

This is the reason I never buy EA sports titles. 2k usually always makes better sports games anyway. I know you hardcore fotball fans need that NFL licenced product. And i have no problem with that. if they were smart they would make one that could evolve. and then they could charge for downloadable content. ie, updated rosters, plays, stats. ect. I just think since they got that exclusive deal with the NFL they just quit trying. confident that people will pay for the NFL brand.

Hmm, that's sad. You can't tell me EA is so financially strapped they can't keep a server or two around just to support some of these old games. As long as people play them, they should support them. In this day and age, product support is going out the window, or in the garbage can. Guess I will reconsider purchasing NASCAR 0+, now that I know they will pull the plug on it as soon as the next version is rdy to ship.

It is all about the $$$$$. If gamers are playing old games online, they're not buying and playing the new ones. Look at the XBLA. Every company has jumped on the bandwagon and released old school titles for the arcade. Not EA. They haven't released one old sports title for the XBLA. They want gamers buying and playing new games. If it were truly not about the money, EA would let gamers or a retro site host servers for those games.

I wonder why they have to shut them down??? I still play outlaw golf 2 with a buddy every now and again, theres no need to shut them down

While this all makes sense what about the achievement points for nba live 06 and pga tour 06 for the 360? Now you can never obtain them again

rokkuman09

Ah, it doesn't matter a lot of those games are pretty old as far as sports games go now.. There probably weren't that many players left on 90% of them anyway.

What?! No online Fight Night Round 3 for the PSP?! OMG, who'd do that anyway?!

For those who enjoy a more statistically and strategically realistic game Strat-O-Matic football is the game for me. It has almost no graphics and has no arcade component (coach and general manager strategy only) but there is plenty of realistic strategy and the game feels like the real NFL. Online play can't be shut down because it's client-client as there is no centralized server.

EA... they are just doing what they do. Which sucks for anyone who is still playing older games, especially online (which is hard to believe) If some see this is a way of them "suckering" gamers into buying their new garbage... who's not to say those people are not already suckers?? I like to think not all gamers are that sheepish... :|

How can DrunkenMunky say sports games suck?. Sport games are so simallar to the real thing, that you have to hate sports to hate sports games. You're probably a fat snob who stays at home all day and moans about how games have become more active. Such as the Nintendo Wii, EyeToy,etc.

HeadSawed

Those are all reasonably old games that won't affect me. One reason that they won't affect me however is because I don't buy EA games. Abandoning '06 games however is not cool. It's only '07! This is another example why I don't purchase EA games.

kavadias1981
kavadias1981

This is a sensible move by EA. The dates of these games are 2005. This means that the games were released in 2004! Seriously, if people are still playing these older versions online, they need help! I can't talk for TimeSplitters 3 though. I haven't a clue when that came put.

I don't think EA realises how detrimental this is to gaming in general. You can see little 10 year old Timmy's mom looking happy she bought a copy of NASCAR 06 - but then they are both mortified to find they can't play it online. "But it says on the box it can be played online!?" This move runs the risk of creating a bad online experience for casual/mainstream gamers. Chances are they won't check to see if the games are still playable online. On a personal note, I will downloaded the Battlefield 2 demo ages ago. When I booted it up I swore that I would never buy an EA game again. Part of the EA T&C of online service is that you agree that EA can request you personal information (name, address, credit card, bank details) from Microsoft (depends on how you set up you LIVE account). I do not believe EA has any reason to know my banking/card details. "If you sign up to play EA games through Microsoft

avier Geez, I bet 99% of you are just jumping on EA like this because you hate EA. You probably don't own one of these games or if you do, you don't play them. Come on...who is playing Madden 06 and Burnout for last generation systems still? I bet if you go online right now there are like two people still playing. It's okay to dislike EA but don't be sheep and piling on EA every chance you get. And if you hate EA for certain reasons, you should hate other developers who come out with shoddy games or bad tactics regardless of their size (Majesco, Sega),--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your one of the many fools who buy the Madden games every year huh? If you knew how much EA as a company has screwed many games and players up just for the $ then you would hate them also. If u still love them....well then talk about blind devotion......

Why bother buying an online game if this kinda crap happens sooner than later.....I have too many more years of my life to waste away and I am content with the current outdated crud and dont feel like moving on. What a waste of an investment (ie money pit).

torres_unix

These greedy dogs should at least release the server software for these games and a patch to allow the gamers to form an online community so they can continue to play these games online. What EA wants is for us to shell more $$$ so that we can continue to play online (with the new title, of course). Simply bad business. On the other hand, who plays old sports titles a year after their release?

This should tell you what kind of Dirty Dogs EA are..They want ya to go buy there newer games for online play. Lets us review 2K sports games do they still have online play for NFL2k5 and there other sports games? Yes i am pretty sure they do. I don't play online so i don't give 2 craps. Dam Skippy i will never buy an EA made game again. EA are just power hungry dirty dogs wanting your hard earned $$$$. They helped kill the xbox with there ported ps2games and lack of online play. There Karma will come back to bite them in there arse 4 sure..HD-DVD rules Blu-ray is going the way of the betamax tape:)

a lot of sports games... can't say i care to much for them but in a while those folks over in EA are really tring to push for their newer titles a long with trying to get rid of our ps2 and xbox....

LOL This is wicked funny...I guess they are saying "if you don't by the latest version of our games then we won't support you anymore." As a Business Marketing major this makes alot of sense to me. As a game it kinda pisses me off. Which side do I take. oh oh i know who cares all those games sucked anyway. PS by the way this sounds like an Xbox live kinda thing to do...Wonder were they got this idea from?

EA sure does know how to support their customer base. *rolleyes* This is, IMO, a bunch of BS. I would recommend that you call and write to complain, but it's EA. They couldn't care less. Never have, never will.

Hey PC fan boys. Did you notice all the PC titles on this list? They are terminated just as sure as the console games. I am not interested in PC private servers. This is EA ending online support built into all games to give gamers that extra incentive to buy an updated title. It has nothing to do with consoles and very little to do with a newer superior experience. Pure profit motive, and nothing more. Just a thought. Why don't all you guys upset about this go to EA's website and write them a stern e-mail? Then you might get a different result. No negative e-mails and everyone going out to buy the new version means EA wins.

caesarbites If you really want to know how EA suffocates the market with their rehashed games, then all you need to look at is a compiled list like this one that shows all the games they won't support anymore. Not that they're doing something wrong by taking these games offline. They'll just be replaced by newer, not necessarily better, installments. Wasn't the Big Corporate Entity at EA just shouting a month or two ago that people are bored to death with rehashes and sequels that come once a year or so?? When will he take his own advice? LOL i love your train of thought. That is just what i was thinking. This is also why i stick to PC gaming. Generally privately run game servers such as those of Counterstrike 1.6 and games like that (they are 8 years old + and still have tons of servers) the games just last so much longer. ..... this is my biggest beef with multiplayer online play for console games. I go in and suddenly i don't even have a server to play on anymore ...

What funny is you can not play any 2k5, 2005 sports games for the Xbox online.. So why is EA and different then 2K's sports, or MS sports and so on... EA is not the only one that shuts down online play for older games.. I wish people would open thier eyes... ALL ONLINE SPORTS GAME ARE SHUT DOWN AFTER A YEAR OR MORE GOES BY....

Ok so this is the fault of two groups: 1. The consumers who buy these crappy every-year games. U dingalings go out rushing out to buy these games and in turn encourage EA's behaviour. 2. It's obvious that EA is also to blame. This little trick of there's is actually a test. If they could get the masses to rebuy their updated crap again and if it proves very successfull (which I say will most likely be) then they're going to make this a very normal routine. But whatever, u guys can make up your own mind....live with your mistakes.
