EA opens DICE LA to make Star Wars games

DICE head would also like to poach top talent from rivals Infinity Ward and Treyarch.

by

Electronic Arts has announced the new Los Angeles-based offshoot of Battlefield developer DICE.

"So…we are expanding," says DICE on Twitter.

DICE head Karl-Magnus Troedsson told the Wall Street Journal that the studio will develop games using EA's freshly acquired Star Wars license, and will also look at creating entirely new franchises of its own.

Troedsson hopes the new LA studio will also be able to lure workers away from rival studios Infinity Ward and Treyarch, which develop the Call of Duty series for Activision. "There is an extreme talent pool over there that we want a part of," he said. "It's no secret that our main competitor is there."

The LA studio is aiming to maintain the values and atmosphere of its Swedish parent, Troedsson added, saying that managers seek a consensus from staff before coming to decisions.

DICE intends to fill 60 positions at the studio before the end of 2013, and has said that some workers from EA's existing LA-studio, Medal of Honor developer Danger Close, have already come over.

Troedsson also said that the chance to work on Star Wars games will make potential staff more interested in the fledgling studio. "People stood up and cheered, when I announced that we were working on Star Wars," he said.

DICE's Battlefield 4 is due out later this year.

EA is a good publishers and has great developers.  Their corporate business model is what leaves a stain on human souls.

Every few years they get embarassed into  cleaning house and restructuring, getting back to game developement and getting gamers to like them again.  But the shareholders start bitching and some spreadsheet monkey starts talking about maximizing profits again and it all falls to shit again.

So they're making a Star Wars FPS game? Like Star Wars: Dark Forces on the PS1? Or is it the likely mixing of Star Wars Battlefront and the Battlefield franchise. That would be pretty sweet...

Biggest mistake Disney has made, licensing StarWars to EA..   I wont buy it!

i've never heard "extreme talent pool" and "Call of Duty" in the same paragraph before.

Honestly DICE makes some awesome games.  Just be prepeared to shell out more than 60 bucks to actually enjoy all the game has to offer because it is EA after all.

Seems like EA's other game that will replace MoH in their "every year FPS release" target

I hope you manage to make some good Star Wars games, for your own sake. The hordes of gamers on the internet are not as forgiving as I am.

I get the feeling that this is not going to work out. I can't remember the last time a company "hired" a new team to work on something this "high profile" and succeeded. You need to have a team to make the game, not a game to make the team. =/

Okay, EA, this is the time to redeem yourself. Do not disappoint us.

DICE would be perfect for battlefront 3.

Yeah 'opens'... they're maybe replacing some old office that EA used to own and put the DICE logo on it!

EA could win some brownie points with the people here. Cmon' EA. Battlefront 3. You know the moment you did this, that it's the only thing you're gonna hear from us. You have an amazing studio and now the rights to it, don't make the mistake of not working on it within hours of you gaining those rights.

Yes if I was aiming to poach staff members from another company, the first thing I'd do is put my intentions out there in a press release. :P (bazinga!)

Danger Close? You mean the developer that made one of the worst UIs ever for weapon customization in Medal of Honor? No thanks. I want the real DICE peeps working on this.

I must say I am happy to see things moving along. Although it is EA, I am looking forward to some new and, being optimistic here, good Star Wars games. Please make Battlefront: 3!

Stick to Battlefield DICE, you'll prolly screw this up like you did Medal of Honors multiplayer.

I don't want call of duty developers in DICE, that right there will destroy the battlefield series

Interesting! Can't wait to see and hear about the storyline and gameplay.  It may be a year or two before we see it.  I can't wait.

I've been so devoid of Star Wars gaming goodness the last few years that I would honestly be okay with a Star Wars CoD ripoff.  Just give us a fun Star Wars game to play, please.  The last great one was probably 6 or 7 years ago.

Oh great. So, now instead of having a Battlefield game every other year with a Medal of Honor game the next year, we'll have a Battlefield game every other year with a Star Wars of Honor game the next year (like Call of Duty's Infinity Ward and Treyarch).

Improvement?

"Why are they called DICE?

Because when you buy one of their games, you're taking a gamble"

get it? it's funny because of how buggy BF3 was/is AHAHAHAHAHA

And hell if it means free to play for the next gen consoles, then I'm down to just pay DLC. FUCK Ya'll

Maybe if it's not by real dice there's some chance the game will be FUNCTIONAL and not broken as fuck. At least with blasters and lasers there won't be an assumption that the ballistics or damage will remotely mirror reality. Let's just hope they don't put in client-side hit detect, the stupidest fucking mistake DICE ever made in BF3. I will say though - If I shoot someone with, say, whatever super powerful weapon in SW universe like the flak gun (forget the name), they best die.

I wonder how much say studios like Bioware and DICE have in the opening of studios like DICE Los Angeles and Bioware Austin. It seems as though EA is just using the names to cash in on brand loyalty, as opposed to opening new studios under different names.

@HaRdNiPs maybe those people they fired arent from l.a. or werent cutting it. you swear people dont hire after they fire people

@Shantmaster_K

With DICE taking over, I don't see how they could look past making a BF3. I would like to see a slightly toned down version of Battlefield with a Star Wars skin.

@DrRockso87 I'd personally prefer DICE-developed Battlefront games over no Battlefront 3 at all.

@Grenadeh Still whining I see. I've read some of your other comments, you sound like a little spoiled brat. Maybe you should give gaming up if you makes you this mad.

@rmartinezdl You know that you dont actually have to buy the DLC right?  Again its just another thing for people to latch onto so they can be anti-something.

@jsmoke03 @HaRdNiPs yeah i swore!? don't know if you keep up with gaming news. ea is losing money that's why they fired people. gamespot had an article about it.
