EA opening Portal 2

Publisher's EA Partners program will handle retail distribution for Valve's forthcoming Mac, PS3, 360, PC puzzler.

by

When Portal debuted in 2007, it came as part of The Orange Box, a compilation of several hit games from developer Valve Software. The collection, which also included Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2, was distributed by Electronic Arts under its EA Partners program, which offers independent developers a suite of publishing services to choose from.

EA Partners will open up Portal 2 at retailers.

When Portal 2 was confirmed in March, there was no doubt that the game would be distributed online via Valve's Steam network. However, there was some question about who would handle the boxed copies of the game, which ships in North America on April 20 for the Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Now, though, EA has confirmed that Valve has re-enlisted with EA Partners for distribution of Portal 2 at retail.

Portal 2 follows the events of the first Portal, which saw gamers taking on the role of a human lab rat, Chell, who used a portal gun to create interdimensional openings on ceilings, walls, and floors in an effort to escape the Aperture Science labs. Along the way, players were guided through the diabolical tests by the deceptively sincere, yet altogether sadistic, artificial intelligence known as GLaDOS.

The game will feature a single-player campaign billed as being twice as long as the original's, but the real focus is on the new multiplayer cooperative mode. The co-op mode will tell a parallel story to the single-player adventure and last roughly as long. In it, players will take control of two robots, named simply Blue and Orange, and work together to tackle their own set of portal-related problems.

I hope EA just distributes the discs and doesn't touch the content of the game at all...EA is garbage and just releases patches

@ Cillerboy I believe Gabe said it would be the best "console version." I think, for the most part, that their games are built primarily with PC in mind though... But, hey, who knows. I'm still debating whether to pick this up for the 360 or the computer.

@zeebenzene and I do have the orange box, I bought it to play team Fortress 2, half-life 2 was interesting untell I did that boat mission and it board the hell out of me and I have not got a chance to play portal cause it does not interest me. So my point is I'm going to be busy with other games that will be coming out before it like Homefront,Crysis 2, Dragon age 2, brink and bulletstorm and a few more I can't remember at this moment.

@zeebenzene why do you strongly advise me to reconsider, it's just me portal 2 does not interest me, and I'm not in any rush to play the first one, and from what I have heard is that portal 2 is going to be twice as large as the first one and apparently the first on is just about 4 hrs of game-play, so that means that portal is going to be about 8 to 10 hrs of game-play

I hope EA will actually do a decent port for the PS3 this time because it deserves to be great quality, no matter which platform it's played on, though it is undoubtedly going to be best for PC simply because that's what it's made for. Can't wait.. actually, I think I can since I'll have no money in the meantime.

Don't understand the bickering between the PS3 and Xbox fans over which version will be better. The PC will be the way to play this game. And Rage. And Crysis 2. And Mass Effect 3.

@mrzero1982pt2 That is not what I am saying at all "gaming platform" and "console" are not completely interchangeable terms, you are incorrectly using them as such. You can play games on both, but I have already explained the difference between a console and a PC (a difference that only you seem to misunderstand)

I'll be buying the PC version through Steam and the XBox version retail (although if I could buy the PC version through steam and have it mailed I'd do that too). Yes, I'll be buying it twice lol =D

Fantastic! The only way this could get any better is if you bought the console version and could download the game from Steam too. Well, that wouldn't be reasonable (greedy of me, rather), but, still... one can dream! Given I've got friends on all four platforms this is excellent news for the *gamers* in my life :)

They are just in digital distribution front, don't understand it, but its their policy.

This game should be bought on steam where Valve can receive the money directly. I just love Valve, best developer ever.
