EA Hoping Its Add-On Content Sales Will Reach $1 Billion This Year

Madden NFL 15 and other EA Sports titles expected to be "major" contributors this fiscal year.

Battlefield and Mass Effect publisher Electronic Arts has high hopes for digital add-on content this year. Bloomberg reports that the publisher is hoping to reach $1 billion in extra content sales across its entire games portfolio in the current financial year.

Madden NFL 15, and other EA Sports titles, will be "major" contributors, EA corporate communications representative John Reseburg said. EA Sports titles monetize beyond the initial $60 purchase price through their Ultimate Team modes, which let you spend real money to buy players and more. Reseburg pointed out that total Madden NFL add-on content revenue rose by 350 percent for the quarter ended June 30 compared to the same period last year.

Is it feasible that EA could reach $1 billion this fiscal year? Some of EA's biggest fiscal 2015 games include Battlefield Hardline, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and The Sims 4, which will presumably all be supported with lots of add-on content. Pile on top of that revenue derived from Ultimate Team modes across EA Sports titles, and hitting $1 billion sounds entirely possible.

EA's fiscal year 2015 ends March 2015, so we won't know if the company was successful in hitting that mark for some time now. To put that $1 billion figure in context, EA's total revenue for the fiscal year ended March 2014 was $4.02 billion. For the year, Ultimate Team modes alone generated $380 million.

Have you found yourself buying more add-on content now than ever before? Let us know in the comments below!

"EA Games - Charge for everything."

Here's hoping your numbers are about 95% off EA.   My continued desire to see you tank holds as strong as ever.  Just die already.

Just the fact it is possible for EA to actually earn $1 billion with the sh*t they pull, makes me lose faith in humanity.

At least EA is open and honest about their greed... How refreshing!

Well now, that's not up to them is it? Let the consumers decide which I'm sure will  turn out predictable. not like EA needs any more money, though.

I can't believe how many suckers pay for EA Ultimate Team card packs... if that's not the biggest waste of money, I don't know what is.

These guys and Microsoft are eventually going to crash the game industry. Just how the music industry did. That'll be exciting.

Well- least they are honest about their greed?

Why I won't buy anything from them and Battlefront 3 will likely be a transaction hell.

@Thanatos2k  Easily the most greedy and pathetic statement concerning video games ever.

Here we go again, EA was warming me to them a little with their EA Access program, but now they pull this crap to basically erase any good will that they garnered from that program.

I thought recently they said they were listening to their fans?  No one wants this.  No one wants total grinds or to have to pay real money to unlock things that are already part of the game.  Let players earn it, fairly.

I was excited about some of the new stuff I read about this year's Madden.  I was thinking of giving it a try, especially since I haven't bought a Madden since 2002 or 2003 (I've only done some renting since then).  But then I read about this microtransaction crap and I have yet another reason to continue to avoid Madden.

Do one honorable thing EA, let the NFL license exclusivity come to an end!  At least do that.

Love how EA tries to double dip every game they sell

And the suckers keep buying into it

GG EA, GG indeed...

EA will probably meet this goal easily. NHL, Fifa and Madden Ultimate Team Modes are cash cows with people spending money on coins for player packs. On top of this, a lot of money will come in through this via EA Access Program. Junkies will eat that program up since it'll offer discounts on purchases.

*Looks at NHL '15 pre-order*  F*** !!!

I can stand things like Be A Pro stat boosts, but if things like jersey's start being taken out.. would be last straw.

Who wants to start the kickstarter to stop people from spending money on EA's add-ons? Would need $3k to fund the advertising.

@berserker66666  This reminds me of how Rockstar was bragging about how much additional money they were making with GTA Online Shark Card transactions.  I played the online a bit, until I ran out of in-game money and then I simply quit (since they give you so little relative to what everything costs, like true a**holes).

No way I'm going to reward them for setting up systems like this by giving them more money, to encourage it.

O.0

Good grief.

That's a lot of monies for one games dlc? Wow.

The good thing is EA set into motion each publisher having separate subs to play games also. Oh wait, that's when I find a new hobby.

How hard is it to squeeze those little boats into bottles?

Attitude2000

I've wondered that myself. Do they build them in there first? Oh man, I don't think I've queried that since I was able to use the internet.

Biggest scam in gaming.  Hold back content to charge for it.  Criminal almost.  Don't buy it.

yearssomuch

Here we have EA openly admitting that they make ridiculous sums of money on just add-on content. Couple that with the fact that EA is notorious for locking content on the disc behind a paywall and literally holding content back to sell as add-on content at a later date, and gamers of ALL shades should be absolutely furious. HOW are they making this much money, while also coming right out and saying 'Look how much money we make behind this corrupt business model!' ?! Why isn't EVERYONE teeming with rage at a statement like this?!

These fuckers need to go out of business, and soon. We, as a collective of gamers, MUST STOP giving them cash. STOP buying their games, STOP paying into their microtransactions, STOP BEING STUPID. Enough is enough.

And many of you think console gaming is in a healthy state.  Maybe you're too young to remember better times.

@xcollector M$, EA and Activision have ruined console gaming, they need to exit the gaming scene. Also, EA games are on PC too.

I hope I win the PowerBall jackpot Wednesday. Well I guess one of us will get what we want. LOL they will get $999.9 million and post a loss for the year, lay off hundreds to save the company and the ceo will take a 50% pay cut. So he will make only $60,000 instead of $120,000 but he will still get his $5 million bonus check.

I love Madden games, just playing with my friends and whatnot, but I cannot justify paying for a couple of virtual cards that will become obsolete in less than a year.

I remember this one time I saw EA walking down the street, and he dropped his phone. So I picked it up and caught up with EA and handed him his phone back. EA then started violently hitting me in the face with a snow globe he had in his bag. As I lay there half-conscious, EA kneeled down and told me, "thank you for your patronage." I didn't understand. I don't buy EA's s***, but I got beat up anyways.

True story.

GLOBALv
GLOBALv

To all the inbred t.rolls that think EA is dog poo, EA is doing this because the market pushed them in this direction. Just like any other money making enterprise, the ones that survive understand shifts in market behaviors. So quit pointing the finger at EA. It's the customers that are fueling this. Just like R*, they're making a killing on GTAV microtransactions.

@GLOBALv  Quite true still it's sickening
