EA gives Wii a six-pack

Half a dozen games in development for Nintendo's new console; new games include installments of Harry Potter, SSX, Godfather, Tiger Woods.

The innovative Wii has clearly caught the eye of the world's biggest entertainment software company. Today, Electronic Arts announced that it has six games in development for Nintendo's upcoming console.

In addition to the previously announced Madden NFL 07 and Need for Speed Carbon, gamers can expect to wave the magic Wii-wand to the tune of a new Harry Potter game. Nintendo's Wii Sports won't be the only place to play 18 on the Wii--a Tiger Woods PGA Tour game for the console is also in the works. The Wii will also hit the slopes with SSX, and in what can be considered another sign that the new console isn't just a machine for kids, the street thugs of The Godfather are headed to Wii-town.

But that won't be all. In a statement today, the company says that even more Wii games that are currently in development will be announced in the coming months.

"Once we started to experiment with Madden on Wii, there was an explosion of innovation. Everyone in the studio is energized by the creative opportunity afforded by both the hardware and controller," said EA senior vice president John Schappert.

I would not be surpriced if this game would rock. Hopefully you'll use the wii-remote to aim with your wand. However the Harry Potter games on Game Cube weren't good at all, and there is not as much action in TOotP as in tGoF. It very much depens on EA games whether this game will ge a real winner or a real loser.

well actually... Wii is technically MORE powerful than the original xbox... so i cant imagine whats going on... i myself bought a Wii because it suited me best ( altough the ridiculous name and the fact that game developers "over-use" the controller eg in CoD3 driving a car is abit too much... ) the online gameplay will begin after March 2007 ( YEAH ! ! ) ...yeah i do hope they start doing the graphically pleasing games sooner rather than later.. but then again... i dont care about photorealism, but the clarity of graphics... i hate those smudgy graphics you find in FarCry: Vengeance...

Well, Wiis been out for... 1.5 months now? (uk). Think about it, wiis only just come out? yes, i know that the wii's graphics wont get that much better, as its not that powerful, but we should get a fair improvement :P ps. Zelda's graphics are mean :P

is it just me or are some games for the wii have rather bad graphics except for a few and the Xbox has better graphics or are they going to do the same as Xbox and learn how to make great graphics on the wii as great as the Xbox? I am not really putting down the wii or anything like that but it will be rather interesting to see if people will learn how to use the graphics or if Nintendo didn't build a very good graphics console? (no offence to the wii once again)

"Everyone in the studio is energized by the creative opportunity afforded by both the hardware and controller" - that says it all...let's hope every development studio thinks and acts like this!

This is great! I'm actually curious about how Harry Potter would play on the Wii. I tried HP one time and I just couldn't get into it but with the Wiimote... I could very well like it.

"Kayrod29 All the sheep that hated EA now like them because they are making games for the Wii. Wonderful." No I still hate EA, I refuse to support them.

Well, while I am always pleased to see consoles getting third party support (especially Nintendo who have lacked it in the past) I cannot help but feel EA's hype machine is, once again, just that - hype. While I am sure most of these games will be passable I only hold out hopes for first party titles when it comes to Nintendo. This could be a case of "old habits die hard" as they because I have had to put up with lackluster third party offerings for a while on my Gamecube and N64 before that. Heres hoping.

EA didnt make a game for a console that console will perish and will not be remembered, so thank god they have took an interest in the wii. the wii will rule .

i agree, if EA will support Wii then Im happy to support them. the purchase of a Wii-only SSX goes without saying. thank god - no more SSX ports from ps2, thats reason enough to celebrate. stay with the new style though, On Tour is waaaay better than SSX3 ( OUT OF BOUNDS... AGAIN !!! )

MatthewNintendo
MatthewNintendo

The only game there I would consider is SSX which was awesome, but even that series is starting to get old now, I wish they would go back to the style of tricky and 3, on tour went a bit weird. Then again that's EA big anyway, the main EA really does suck, but I guess any support is good if it will help the system.

Omihalcon
Omihalcon

Any show of support can't be bad, regardless of how meager, but the Wii will stand alone on the strength of original, innovative titles; not the substandard generic games that EA pumps out year after year.

why does every article with the words ps3, xbox 360, or their respective companies always end up like a fanboy forum?

edhc44, I criticize all of the big three when I feel they deserve it. Unlike some of you though, I don't feel an intrinsic link between my self esteem and that of a corporation so I don't take offense to criticism of a corporate entity. I got started with PC gaming over 20 years ago (well, actually played arcades before that), so I have a soft spot (nostalgia) for those types of games. However, I don't make excuses for the issues that market is guilty of (over-reliance on patches, intrusive pirate protection software, etc.). I also recognize nostalgia for what it is and cringe when I go back and play those old games now and realize the good old days really weren't that good! It's the emotion we felt playing it at the time that we tend to remember, rather than how good the game actually ended up being. :) My gentle jibe was merely targeted at fanboys who have a desperate need to champion their chosen corporation and see it as infallible. The angry, personal attacks are proof of this as well as the immaturity of that market segment. I also hope Nintendo is successful - a viable, family-friendly console system is a laudable goal and competition is always a good thing.

grognard- actually, Microsoft has only had one quarter in their gaming market where they ever made money and that was when Halo 2 came out. The Wii will definately be better than the 360 because Nintendo knows its roots and gives you the same goodies they gave you before. Now, Nintendo has to make people want this remote and motion sensor, because people are not going to buy it to play with a regular controller (this refers to multiplatform), otherwise they'd buy the ps3 or 360 because of their graphics (with the exception of Brawl). They have already taken a step in the right direction, they will supposedly have mario, zelda and metroid at launch (as pissed as I am about them pushing zelda back), and no Gears of War or Halo 3 will be able to stop that from growing popularity through the roof. The only equivalent would be if God of War, Final Fantasy (the main series) and Metal Gear Solid all came out at the same time (provided if they all came out on the same console). Microsoft also lost 400 million dollars for the Xbox 360 and still hasn't gotten a firm grasp on the Japanese market. you call your self an agnostic, but I can you a fanboy. You don't understand the gaming roots, so how would you possibly understand Nintendo and what it's doing? It's Microsoft's fault games are 60 bucks, Nintendo has indicated their games will be 40 and 50. Keeping that in mind, Nintendo isn't pushing a next gen console, it's just pushing its next console, a system with technology that was created years ago. What does that do? It cements that they are staying true to their fans and not pushing systems that you need to pay 400 bucks or more for. Even of if you buy the crap 360, you're going to still spend money because you'll want the HDD as it's a better deal then those memory cards. NIntendo is making up fot the 64 and Gamecube, with the Wii, and anyone who can't see that shouldn't be allowed to call themselves gamers. The Revolution has begun, will you be a part of it?

This is good for starters. Hopefully other game companies will do the same

grognard you call yourself a gaming agnostic while you stand up for (suck up to?) MS and bash Nintendo. What's the problem in having a favorite gaming company? I too have all current-gen consoles and although I kinda expect Nintendo to come back to the top, I'm not ashamed to say that in the last 10 years (11 if you consider the Virtual-Boy fiasco) they had no chance against Sony. And I had a whole lotta fun with my PSOne and PS2. But the best time I ever had in gaming was back when I was nine or ten, there was no Playstation whatsoever and the Snes was the best gaming machine available. I have fond memories of those days, and I may be living in nostalgia, I may be even being stupid, but at some level I hope that if Nintendo climbs back to the top, I'll feel that way again. And if everyone who feels the same way I do wanna cling to false hopes, who the f*** are you to say otherwise?

solidbb

Well that is good news! Now here's what's going to happen... PS3 will finish last and the Wii and 360 will be the contenders

Hey, a Harry Potter game might actually be good if you got to wave the wii-mote to throw spells and stuff. Not really trusting EA to make any great games, but maybe they'll get more casual gamers interested, I mean honestly, do you see your casual gamer pal shelling out $600 for a ps3?

grognard

Oh yeah, I forgot to respond to Captainalpha1's changing the terms of the debate towards profitability. MS is the most profitable company in history. You might want to "check the facts" and actually inform yourself not from message boards but respected trade journals. For example, if you'd read some of the articles by respected journalist Dean Takahashi you would have realized that the xbox division was a "loss-leader" for MS - it was SUPPPOSED to lose money! MS is obsessed with "breaking into the living room" and Gates approved a vast commitment of financial resources to do so (of which the xbox division is only part of the strategy). Now that they have made inroads into the market, MS has set a goal of breaking even this generation and then finally turning a profit next generation. MS is cash flush and can afford this strategy - Nintendo's revenues would be a footnote on MS' quarterly reports and can't afford to do this which is why they had to take the low-cost strategy this generation. They spin it as innovation when in fact it is the only option available to them as they can't afford to take a loss on the R&D and production of hardware like MS, and to a lesser degree Sony, can.

grognard
grognard

The Nintendo "revival tent" loonies like captainalpha1 are out in full force now! :) You need to brush up on your reading comprehension skills and also realize that the world does not revolve around pre-teens like yourself. My jibe merely pointed out how excited the die-hard Nintendo fans were about getting included on a handful of third-party multi-platform titles. It is a sign of desperation when you have to get worked up about only getting 6 multiplatform titles from EA over the next year or so. I have all current gen consoles and the 360 and plan on buying the Wii (have DS and PSP too). - I'm gaming agnostic. My problem with Nintendo is that they have marginalized themselves to the kiddie market with the endless Mario and Princess Peach type recycled crap. 40 year olds like myself are frankly a bit tired of playing games that are geared to the Nick crowd. The market is comprised primarily of 24+ year old gamers now and Nintendo has failed to acknowledge that. Nintendo talks about innovation but most of their first party releases are retreads of 20 year old kids franchises. That is why they have struggled to obtain third party support - there aren't enough children buying $60 games to entice Ubisoft and EA to commit significant resources to the kiddie market, so they just throw out a few cheap bones. It's cheaper to develop a $20-30 handheld game than a full-blown console title which is the only reason Nintendo is still viable financially.

I like Wii and also it's cheap price, but the vote in our Games site ( http://games.dantri.com.vn ) is not so good for it, 81% people in Vietnam will chose PC with Vista or $600 PlayStation 3, but only 2% chose the Wii in spite of the $200 price. Microsoft and Sony are doing really good here.

I don't care much for sports or harry potter GAMES, but the concept is brilliant, and I am really anticipating what Nintendo and third party support will offer to us these next upcoming years... If only Nintendo would make Pikmin 3... (I want to toss my pikmin where I want to toss them, i flick the remote and they go there... That simple.)

Thanks EA but I don't like any of your games besides for EA Big almost everthing they do is good. Madden has yet to top ESPN NFL 2K5, Harry Potter..., Need for Speed is consisntenly pretty good (ill give them that), Godfather better be pretty unique. Well whatever, I hope the best for Nintendo and the Wii, so great more 3rd party support. I'd like to see boxing and Hockey. In other words Fight Night and NHL 2K7 and not EA's crap NHL 2007.
