EA gets perfect score on corporate equality index

Battlefield publisher scores 100 percent on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index for demonstrating best-in-class policies, benefits, and practices for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender employees.

by

Battlefield and Mass Effect publisher Electronic Arts has received a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index for the second year in a row. To be named to the list, businesses must demonstrate a range of policies, benefits, and practices that show corporate commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender employees.

304 total businesses earned a top score of 100 percent and the distinction of "Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality." To be rated, businesses must be one of the 1,000 largest publicly traded companies, as designated by Fortune magazine, or part of American Lawyer magazine's top 200 revenue-grossing law firms. Additionally, any private-sector, for-profit employee with 500 or more full-time U.S. employees can ask to participate.

Others companies receiving perfect scores included Apple, Bank of America, Ford Motor Co., Miller Coors LLC, Sony Electronics, and Sony Pictures. No other game companies received a perfect score. There were four main objectives of the criteria for this year's judging process. EA and other top-scorers exemplified the below objectives:

  • Provide equal benefits for same-sex partners and spouses
  • End benefits discrimination for transgender employees and dependents
  • Demonstrate firm-wide organizational competency on LGBT issues
  • Demonstrate firm-wide public commitment to the LGBT community

"We are extremely proud of this achievement that recognizes corporate policies and practices that demonstrate a commitment to LGBT equality and inclusion," EA said in a statement on its blog. The publisher specifically called out its Diversity & Inclusion team as helping company achieve the designation from the Human Rights Campaign.

In 2013, EA participated in local Pride Parades across the world. And in February, EA hosted the "Full Spectrum" event in New York that assembled industry leaders to discuss various LGBT issues. The publisher also officially sponsored the first annual Gaymer X convention in San Francisco this summer.

It should also be noted that a portion of the $10.5 million raised as part of EA's record-setting Humble Origin Bundle went to the Human Rights Campaign, though the exact figure is unknown.

"We're very proud that EA has been named a 'Best Place to Work' by HRC again this year and that our organization has been recognized for providing a workplace that is inclusive and where everyone feels welcome," EA head of Diversity & Inclusion Andre Chambers said. "We look forward to continuing that tradition in 2014."

The full Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index is available at the organization's website.

Oh shock horror, another EA Hate Bandwagon has arrived on cue and ready to bash the living fuck out of them for no reason.

Sure some of their games have issues, what company releases a perfect game??? Even the beloved Blizzard releases games that have issues on release day (or release months) and i have personally fallen victim to Battlefield 4 not working properly, not a big issue as i have a few other games to tide me over till they fix it. No rush, there won't be another BF game for a few years. Other than the MP issues, BF4 is great fun and they have released a very solid shooter and probably the best console shooter this year.

EA have a bad image problem for unjustifiable reasons, and i find it unfair especially when they do actually pump money into titles that turn out to be outstanding. If i had to do a top 10 games of the last generation (or last 10 years) i bet 5 out of 10 of those games are EA Games (and none of them are sport games either, well besides SSX) - They make solid games and entries in their series, just because they do a yearly editions of sport games and shut down studios that make games that do not sell that automatically makes them hated.

SSX, Burnout, Battlefield, Need For Speed (under Criterion), Crysis, Mass Effect, Rock Band, Dead Space, All solid series. Activision would envy to have such a solid list of series to work on. All they have is Call Of Duty and Skylanders.

They even pump money into series that didn't sell well just to please fans (Mirror's Edge)

Stop your fucking whinging.

Kudos to EA, where everyone is equally mistreated!

Too bad their other policies relating to actual games sucks donkey b*lls

Well I was expecting to see some "boycott" EA comment. Not really dissapointed

Maybe EA has dug many grave for some epic games, and dissapoint us gamers for so many times. But that doesn't mean all of EA members are really bad like Riccitello

So the worst company in America doesn't discriminate. If that is fully true EA has won some major points in my book. Discrimination is one of the worst things out there.

I'm sure many people can relate to working places with very backwards attitudes. In my case I've work around some very racist managers, staff and general office culture. This was decriminalization which I would benefit from... In fact I can't see me getting the job there if I was anything other than white.

Companies should aspire to, and be proud of, supporting equal opportunities. So many do act terribly, against all kinds of minorities, and attempt to normalise some very nasty attitudes. So whilst it might be tempting for some to shrug and say, 'So what'. EA should be given credit for this.

Well done EA. Each step makes the world a slightly better and happier place.

Worst company in America huh?  Doesn't look like it.

Oh, that's good. So now they are equal-opportunity greedy assholes who will indiscriminately screw over everyone instead of certain groups.

That's great, now all they have to do is stop being anti-consumer assholes!

de-astroturfer

And yet they are still the most hated company in America, no mean feat considering who they're up against, it must be because you scored so low on the consumer rights index, and so high on the corporate monopoly index are you going to take steps to rectify that ? no of course your not because it costs money to care about your customers where as it cost nothing to not be homophobic.

cirugo

How nice.  Now let's get back to the real problem for them...their business practices are destroying gaming.

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

Um, this is the company named Worst Company in America.  The company that just years ago had people's wives revealing how terrible their work conditions were.

But ok, they don't discriminate against homosexuals.  Gold star for them!  Now how about you fix the other stuff?

bbq_R0ADK1LL
bbq_R0ADK1LL

So a company that's really good for LGBT people to work in is also a company that makes decisions which it's customers hate... is there some kind of correlation because I can't see it? If there is, anyone who makes the connection will sound like a horrible bigot so um... I got nothin'.

I don't really get how this is a thing though. Unless you're having sex in the workplace, sexual orientation shouldn't make a difference. Shouldn't the Human Rights Corporate Equality Index also be including things like race, culture & religion?

Good. At least they are doing something right.

It also scores a perfect on how it treats all of those employees, the constant rampage of trying to monopolize the market, how it hates competitive pricing, it's DRM nonsense, and the way it consistently spews garbage about why it makes decisions about the games it makes.

Despite winning this award. EA is still a horrible corporation. They will win worst company in America for the third straight year.

DrKill09

That's good, but what about whites, middle aged, and old people?  They are discriminated against just as much, IF NOT MORE at the work place.

I've dealt with a lot more racism at work than I ever had discrimination for being bi.

I mean SimCity... and DRM Origin... Come on guys, smarten up.

I personally don't have a problem with EA and never have. No one is forcing people to pay for their stupid fees or what have you.

If you're a smart consumer there's no way EA can screw you.  On the other hand if you just don't know any better than who's fault is that?...

Unfallen_Satan

@musalala My thoughts exactly. With the good news recently, they now run the risk of being good for everyone except gamers. Still, I say good for EA for this recognition.

@Nev3rtime That makes me think of my boss. He's an anti-racist skinhead. Forgot what they are called, but he is, or was one. Now I just wish he would be better at reading people, like when he hires them.

Well yeah, because they treat their consumers as cows to be milked.

I really appreciate their push for equality in the workplace; it's probably EA's only redeeming feature, but their overall business practices on the consumer end are pretty dreadful.

Bullshit. You are a liar.

On a personal note, I've  never felt discriminated in America. Can't think of one instance.

Why don't you name a few instances where white heterosexual males get discriminated based on their skin color/ethnicity?

@djpetitte Bullshit. Being smart or stupid has nothing to do with EA's lack of ethics in this industry. EA releases broken games for sale, it's their fault, not the hapless saps that get conned into buying their shit. I blame reviewers for spreading misinformation and advertising quips.

Aaron_130
Aaron_130

@shingui5 @Megavideogamer If that was so true then why do people buy their games?? Gamers complain about getting 'milked' but still go out and buy their games. If they were hated so much and putting out absolute shit then nobody would buy it.

Just because their games don't appeal to you doesn't mean they are shit. I dislike games made by Blizzard because they just don't appeal to me at all, doesn't mean i hate that company.

@conorhat @djpetitte

what's bullshit? You don't really know how business works do you? well let me tell you, it's very cut-throat.  It's not the reviewers or advertisements you can blame. they did not force you or anyone to purchase anything, that is ones own choice.  If you want to call EA a conman and they conned people into buying there product's, that's not ea's fault. Again, no one is forcing anyone to buy EA products.

@ladies_man_xxx @conorhat You asked for tolerance from others who may view your prejudices about a corporation that has repeatedly and nefariously robbed the consumer of their basic rights while simultaneously peddling snake oil in the name of entertainment software. conorhat
conorhat

@djpetitte @conorhat I'm shocked that you loved BF2142 and can't connect EA to the reason why the new Battlefield is not as good, in fact it's garbage just like COD. Dude, it's okay to be mad at EA. If you're not mad at them, you just don't understand the problems. They are forcing developers to dumb their games down so they can milk the cash cow. Consumers need to send a message to the industry that we don't want crap games, and we won't buy crap games, and anyone who tries to force crap on us will soon meet their fate in an unemployment line.

djpetitte
djpetitte

@conorhat

Actually, No.  2142 was my all time favorite battlefield game.  I had over 500 dog tags in that game and nearly 300 hours into. The game had issues at first but I did not feel like I got fucked in the ass. I got my moneys worth out of that game.  Other than BF games I haven't bought any EA games. No I don't buy into premium and all that crap.

Ive spend the same amount of money on pretty much every bf game I have ever bought expect 1943(15) and BF free to play.  Even 1942 when you added up all the expansions it equaled to almost the same price it is now with premium.  SO if trolling is saying I don't have a problem with EA, so be it. Like I give a crap.

conorhat
conorhat

I call bullshit again. Even if you don't buy EA games they are actively screwing the entire industry over. Let me guess, you preferred Battlefield 3 over BF2142? You never liked Westwood Studios  and you think Red Alert 3 is awesome? Am I getting warm Mr. Troll?

djpetitte
djpetitte

@conorhat @djpetitte

conorhat
conorhat

@djpetitte @conorhat I have an MBA, haha you can't be seriously suggesting I don't understand business. You don't understand getting fucked in the ass apparently. And I'm not talking about sodomy either, I'm referring to EA's general business practice.
