EA expecting 'golden age' of gaming soon

Labels boss Frank Gibeau claims from current "chaos" will come a "new order"; believes new era will be an exciting time for games.

by

The gaming industry today is flooded with newness. New platforms, new business models, and new distribution channels are emerging left and right. Speaking to GamesIndustry International, EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau described these advancements as "chaos," but that has not kept him from envisioning a bright future for the industry.

Gibeau believes a "new order" is on the way for games.

"I've been in the industry for a fair bit of time, and looking at the chaos that people perceive is happening out there right now, frankly, from my perspective, the underlying opportunities are so huge that we're about to embark on a whole new golden age of gaming," Gibeau said.

The EA executive pointed to the rapidly growing size of the industry as a positive point. He said ten years ago, the size of the industry was measured at 200 million gamers. Now, he claims, the industry's size totals one billion gamers, and is heading towards doubling that figure.

"From this chaos, you're going to get a new order, a new approach, that's going to be a very vibrant time for games," he said. "Yes, there's chaos right now, but a golden age is coming."

Breaking News, this just in. EA have discovered ways to DLC an entire game, EA revenue expected to rise next financial year, and on an unrelated note, EA President today claiming the beginning of a "Golden Age" for gaming.

When I hear that EA ceases to exist I will believe that a new golden age of gaming may come.

The title of this piece claims that EA are expecting a 'golden age' in gaming, but no where in the article does it say they're going to stop acting like money-grabbing delinquents...

In my opinion, the golden age of games was the 16 to 128 bit console eras.

sad how they count mobile gamers....i think its a different section, because mobile gamers don't actually play games unless it was on their phone....

i think if the industry is growing, the industry should fix some of the business models to accomodate for this.

The Golden Age might have come a long time ago, if EA didn't RUIN it!!!!

This is the same company who just announced they will never release a strictly singleplayer game again, meaning every game with EA's name on it is going to have a terrible tacked on multiplayer experience to ruin the whole game.

The ''Golden Age'' has come and gone, yet there are some devs who seem to still care about making a good game-for the consumer-not share holders, stock investers; Now  a days, however, they're corrupt and greedy.

Is it just me or does this sound like something a supervillain says right before he spells out his master plan to the chained up hero?

EA needs to keep it's mouth shut and try to make some good games again.

Ya, the golden age will be coming eventually. But its not because of what companies are pushing for now, its going to be when companies like EA/Activision/Ubisoft need to learn they either need to start appealing to gamers or they will die out. I know that's not how it is now but there whole ideas are based on short term profits. Soon companies are going to start losing money and eventually one of the big 3 will rise from the ashes of falling profits and will start to give back to players, then every company is going to follow or they will cease to exist. That is when were going to get our Golden Age.

That age was (in my opinion) roughly from 1991 to 2002, and EA had a hand in its end.

Oh yeah, mobile and casual gaming popularity surpassing traditional, social games that are just another way to use Facebook, simple puzzle games designed to distract you for 10 minutes in line at the bank, a golden age my friends.

We're entering the dark age of gaming, the grindhouse age, the age of rehashes, reskins, remakes.  Everyone will be playing video games in time, probably on their phones, and that's supposed to mean a great time for serious gamers?  The ones that line up at midnight, the ones who buy dedicated gaming hardware.

Ah, same old "mainstream" thing I keep coming back to.  Just think, how many times does something, especially art, going more mainstream, more mass market, make it better for its original or hardcore fans?

bullsh1t!

they're really want to make money instead of good games, look to fifa, madden, and all the annual games that ea,activision and others do. and all the dlcs that they release in the game launch.

"we're about to embark on a whole new golden age of gaming," - Yeah, from their strategy it appears that social, online only multiplayer, and dlc is what is going to bring that too... lol, that 'golden age' is already dead - I actually see me leaving gaming completely sooner than I see myself super interested again.

Of course gaming will continue to grow as long as the world population increases. 'everyone' wants to play, they just don't care to pay much anymore or bother with the games EA keeps pushing.

Funny... Last I checked, they're the ones who murdered 'the golden age' of gaming.

Golden Age of Gaming was from about 1985-1996 along with the golden age of arcade games.  The only thing left for gaming now are what I call the 'knock off's'.  The very small minority of games which actually do deliver, about 5 to 10%.  Just my opinion.

While I don't expect it from EA, at least not as the origin source, I've been getting this vibe from the industry lately. There are so many great games in production right now that the next few years are looking amazing for gamers. Console folks should get a bunch of new consoles to play with soon, and PC gaming is growing and seeing a resurgence of great old titles (Wasteland, Shadowrun, etc.) mixed with awesome new ones (look at PAX info).

A golden age for EA's wallet, more like. The golden age of gaming was from 1996-2005. We'll never get that back and they know that.

Its funny us gamers are thinking it will soon be a new Dark age of gaming!

Also some say it was the likes of you and EA that are the cause!

You must know most of all about the "chaos" that the industry is within today, because you and your company are the ones who helmed the damn thing!

The Golden age of gaming is coming? So says EA who haven't produced a single GOTY winning game LOL.

I don't listen to their opinions. I ridicule and laugh at them.

If anyone has a right to comment on the future of the industry then it's Hideo Kojima or the fellas at Naughty Dog.

PEACE.

lmao, the golden age of games is about to end and the corporate controlled, server based, digital era is in it's infancy.  I guess it maybe the "golden age" for publishers/ console makers but the days when we actually owned the games we bought are coming to an end sadly.

"From this chaos, you're going to get a new order, a new approach,"

- EA Translation - "All gaming will be digital distribution, we will own all the licenses, and charge you a monthly fee to play!  A Golden Age!"

EA keeps saying shit. They don't even know that a golden age of gaming means great games and low sell prices. It's all about THE-EFFING-PLAYERS! Geez!

I'm pretty sure nostalgia is what creates these "golden ages" and I'm pretty sure if another one were to happen no one would realize then but only when they look back a few years later and go "those were the good old days"

Also 1/6th of the world's population are gamers? That is awesome

Jerrymedic

If they means more monopolized gaming market and more giant corporation like themselves, yeah, it's a golden age for them to scoop more money. Not for us players no, hell no.

Funny how he used the word chaos, which pretty much describes our needy, greedy and creepy society today. It surprises me no more these guys KEEP INSISTING on next-gen like salvation for who knows what. If "the chaos" is installed, then maybe the industry is to blame!! We gamers didn't cause that! We are just on hold waiting for the next big thing. And what we get? Pseudo-philosophy from white-collar...

IMO we've already had the golden age of gaming... The 90's...  Sure the technology wasn't as advanced, but the games were great, the developers were passionate and the publishers weren't just in it to fleece everyone. They even had gaming shows on TV. These days it's all about rehashing the same games over and over again, and making as much money as possible... Won't be long before publishers start charging for patches!

GhostHawk196

Sure there may be a Golden Age for game in the future, but EA will definately not be enjoying it unless they deeply reflect their pathetic business ethics for the past few years.

braydensearle

Kickstarter gives us a way to bypass publishers completely, perhaps if the first wave of crowd funded games are a success it will catch on and publishers will be forced to compete with gamers themselves as a source of funding.

Then we can get a golden age of games.

bloody-hell

The only "chaos" I see at the moment is all the constant bullshit news from the few "big publishers" and their lack of connection to reality or to accept that their customers don't want their DRM and crackers laugh at the protection measures.

EA creates fake problems (and "chaos") only to "solve" them to seemingly be the good guy and for staying in the news.

PC gaming is dead ?

Piracy is an evil problem which only disfunctional spyware DRM can solve ?

Permanent online connection to their servers is required to counter piracy and improve the customer experience ?

Free to play is the future ?

Current hardware is holding back innovation ?

Sure, by all means, keep living in that dreamworld of yours and I'll keep watching you disappear over the years.

Their investors should just close down EA and free all the development studios and invest in them instead, then perhaps (just as one of many examples) Maxis' new SimCity wouldn't turn out to be a broken, feature cut, DRM and forced online filled, social media integrated day-1 wreck.

@EggEmperor I would disagree I think the rise of the indie game developer is leading us into a new golden age and I don't think that the big AAA publishers will be able to continue as they do if they indie market keeps growing.

@OurSin-360 Dont buy their bloody games then and that goes for everyone else so they stop going in this direction!

kattamuuran

@OurSin-360 i could not agree with you more. here here! i have felt very strongly that the golden age of japanese games was PS1/PS2 era, the golden age of western games is now, and the future is going to be pretty much how you have said it. i personally think this push for new consoles is complete bollocks. its the corperate agenda brainwashing gamers into thinking we NEED new hardware and product, when those same losers have claimed that this gen is spent, which it is clearly not.

KrazzyDJ

@Uesugi-dono Precisely !!! Going digital is all that EA has been lately yanking about since the past one - two months or so !!!

kattamuuran

@braydensearle yeah, but i have serious problems with paying developers to make games that i will then need to buy. kickstarter is one of the most brilliant marketing ploys of all, it makes you pay twice for what you want because of some hollow rhetoric that is being sold to you as "passion."

@bloody-hell Their studios are living dead cash cows that should die as well. Most of the great minds are gone from them anyway. Do not have mercy on BioWare, DICE or Crytek, they are living deads serving their lord.
