EA details Mass Effect 3/Kingdoms of Amalur crossover promo

Demos for 38 Studios' debut action RPG and BioWare's sci-fi trilogy capper will each unlock its own game's equipment for the full version of the other game.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Mass Effect 3 are both role-playing games published by Electronic Arts, but their worlds are vastly different. However, EA today announced a new crossover promotion that will bring the two a little bit closer.

The Mass Effect 3 demo will unlock this Shepard-inspired N7 Armor in Kingdoms of Amalur.

A demo for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning arrives on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on January 17, and gamers who download the trial will unlock items not only for the fantasy title, but also for Mass Effect 3.

Items available for Mass Effect 3 via Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning are The Reckoner Knight Armor and the Chakram Launcher. The Reckoner Knight Armor maximizes close-quarter damage and increases projectile velocity. The other Mass Effect 3 in-game item gamers will earn for playing the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo is the Chakram Launcher. This weapon fires "lightweight, explosive ammunition discs" and is only available to those who complete the Reckoning demo and watch the trailer at its end.

The promotion doesn't end there. Gamers who participate in the Mass Effect 3 demo (which does not have a release date yet) will unlock the N7 Armor and Omniblade Daggers for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The N7 Armor is based on Commander Shepard's iconic apparel, and the Omniblade Daggers are holographic blades that let gamers stab foes in close quarters. Mass Effect 3 is due out for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on March 6.

As for what gamers can expect from the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo, EA said the trial will allow players to create and customize hero characters, partake in the game's tutorial mode, and then venture into a "portion" of the title's world. Following the completion of the tutorial mode, gamers will have 45 minutes to explore the world of Amalur.

In addition to the items mentioned above, gamers who participate in the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo will score three more items. These include an ice resistance booster Twist of Fate Card; a health and mana boosting Twinned Souls Chakram weapon; and a protective helmet called The Infernal Helm, unlocked after the completion of tutorial mode. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is due out for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on February 7.

Tried the demo for this. Wow, there's some nasty bugs in here. There was some weird graphical issues near areas with water and I swear the game bugged on me during dialouges fast forwarding everything to the point I couldn't read anything and could only pick the choices. I hope this is an earlier build cause it's going to be pretty bad to see those bugs in the actual game.

got everything! make sure you play the whole game through or you won't get the last mass effect item XD!

Well, I was planning on playing both demos anyway. So this is a nice bonus.

@Darkflare_EX I second and support this question. If it's 45 minutes for a single playthrough with no restart option, its gonna be a too huge download for a too little amount of playtime !!!

More items to choose from in ME3. Still, I do like it when companies release demo's. If it's good, EA will get more of my money.

Actually, here's a good question. The demo lasts 45 minutes. But is it 45 minutes total or once the 45 minutes are up, you can restart the demo with another character and get another 45 minutes?

Now these kinds of bonuses are ones I want to see more.

@LogicSavanT annoying pre-order incentives. Which they're still doing. :D

Smart move by EA. Now they effectively advertising for both games. Also, i like this much more than annoying pre-order incentives.

Awesome. I like this Crossover stuff. Reminds me of the days of Double Dragon X Battletoads, but maybe that's too far fetched...

i am honestly appreciative of this idea but the only flaw in all this is that ME3 demo has no release date and we are in the middle of January hope it comes out soon as for me I will get the demo for amalur if it impresses me ill buy the retail version of the game but for ME3 no question collector's edition PS thanks EA for the release date of demo for Amalur and all this crossover offer stuff its really great you guys are doing this stuff

You know, EA is definitely on to something with these offers! And the bonuses actually seem useful!!!

ME3 CE edition .....but I don't know about this one between Diablo 3 ( I hope they release it in march this year ) ME3 and Borderlands 2 and my last exams I will not have time for it , but it is nice to see EA giving some free stuff

Definitely much nicer than usual, where the demo comes out months after the game.

I won't use the extra gear. They're probably weak, and if not, I wouldn't use them anyway for fear of imbalancing the game. Bottom line, if the KOA demo impresses me, I'm buying it. ME3 is a guaranteed buy no matter what.

KoA is a day one buy for me, all the videos and interviews are very promising. I'm holding off on ME3 so I don't get disappointed like ME2.

Yeah I won't buy into promotional gimmicks. I used to, but I can't name one time it's been worth it. I know what they're doing and why they're doing it, and I don't really blame them for it. That said, it's a slippery slope that creates a fragmented experience for players who don't order half the catalog in one sitting - or copies from different stores. It doesn't bother me anymore to wait and research a little. Not doing so has cost me a fortune on hype engines and laconic DLC.

Very cool promo. Looking forward to the Koa demo for sure.

Zloth2

Yeah, whatever. Here's the deal EA: if Mass Effect 3 is good then I will buy it. If it isn't, I won't. Period. Same with Kindoms of Amalur. And no, I'm not about to "pre-order" anything. I don't like buying games sight unseen. On the other hand, it's definitely good to hear that KoA is getting a solid demo. We don't see enough of those these days.

@HollowNinja It's definately on Origin, not sure if you need to have origin to play it though but there's a damn fine chance of it.

I just hope Amalur doesn't require Origin.

@raahsnavj Seems like you need to find things to complain about. The game is great, great value, and this is all for free anyway........ and Dragon Armor in ME 2 is epic on a vanguard.

I already have pre-ordered KOA:R Signature Edition and have planned on buying ME3 since day 1 so this is very good news. This is probably one of the best moves EA/38 Studios (BHG) could have done. This is great publicity, gets people talking and playing this brand new IP to really give it a chance to succeed.

Already preordered both based on each game's own merits, so this is just gravy.

Mass Effect is the new EA pimp. it use to be about saving the galaxy, now it is about trying to hit every target market somehow and cross promotional BS to persuade you to try other EA franchises. Why does Shepard run around in dragon armor? oh yeah, he preordered. The relevance of the Mass Effect universe is like going to a cosplay event.
