EA Announces Mixed Martial Arts Game

Publisher reveals development of MMA title, no further details given.

THQ and Yukes recently released UFC 2009 Undisputed to widely positive critical reception, and in the absence of any mixed martial arts-based competition, it looked like their closest competitor in the fighting scene would be EA’s upcoming Fight Night Round 4. Apparently, that’s no longer the case. During EA’s E3 2009 press conference earlier today, the megapublisher announced development on a new game titled simply as EA Sports MMA.

However, details on the game begin and end with its title. No further information was given for EA Sports MMA. We’re left wondering which fighters will be included in the game, or if there’s going to be any sort of league affiliation involved to help battle against the brand recognition of THQ’s Ultimate Fighting Championship license.

Another pressing question has to do with the studio involved in the game’s development. A safe bet would be EA Canada, the studio responsible for Fight Night Round 4. It is currently winding down development with that particular game set to ship on June 25. However, that’s purely speculation on our part. We should have more information on EA Sports MMA in the very near future, so stay tuned.

It would be nice to see what they could do with this, Although the UFC does own a the well known fighters at the moment, and they have done a decent game with UFC:Undisputed, but EA sports, and EA chicago have shown how good they can be with the Fight Night series so im very excited to see what EA can do with this sport.

UFC was a good game but career was just way to short! Maybe EA Sports MMA will have a good career mode.

MMA has to be thought of like a chess match both on the feat, and ground where you have to be 2 steps ahead of your opponent. As a side note i'm also a big fan of both rugby and football, and they're both very different and it's a bit ignorant to bash anything that you do not understand.

@AlSnowFan: There's a ton of great fighters not in the UFC that could be in the game, fighters from afliction, strike force, dream, WEC, and several other smaller promotions. Having their names in a game like this would be great for these promotions and would help get their name out from under the shadow of the UFC. Pride fighters would not be featured as the UFC bought out pride. Fedor is one possible name that could be featured in the game but others could possibly be Mike Thomas brown, Urijah Faber, Josh Barnett, Ken and Frank Shamrock, Vitor Belfort, and many many more, Nick Diaz the list is nearly endless. Personally I'd love to see Bas Rutten and Don Frye. @Hollander1, K-1 incorporates a lot of standup martial arts forms, but has no grappling thus removing things like wrestling, Judo, and BJJ. MMA uses everything not just stand up and to say that one particular stand up style is superior to anything else would be foolish especially when you consider how many kickboxers and stand up specialists someone such as Royce Gracie dispatched. Yes, you can hit someone while they're down (certain strikes are not allowed however, such as kicks or knees to the head while down) however it's still part of a strategy as each strike opens you up to a submission or reversal.

Why does this have to have some sort of league and roster of licensed fighters with it? I admit seeing Pride would be cool, but a complete representation of the many martial arts styles worldwide would be even better. THQ's UFC only had 3 striking and 3 grappling styles. Imagine being able to create a fighter the knows savate and aikido, silat and sambo, or wing chun and krav maga even... Fighting games have been using the same unrealistic system for WAY too long, UFC was pretty much a different style of fighting game. I'd personally like to see EA expand on that and make a fighting game that actually represents fighting. That's just me though..

@Hollander_1, I see where you're trying to go but it's still JUST STAND UP, MMA is much more than that, K1 is basically boxing with kicks added, so kick boxing is a general term and fits it hate to burst your bubble but it's true, as for the game itself if their making a true MMA game who's going to be in it? I mean really the only big name they can sign is Fedor after that they start losing the casual fan who is the most likely to buy the game.

@ ckhollywood K1 isnt just kickboxing,, it is; karate, kung fu, tae kwon do and kickboxing. So yeah k1 is also a mma (mixed martial arts) And you can't say that UFC surpassed any other fighting sports because you can not compare UfC to other fighting sports. I tend to think that Americans get bored with the usual sport to quick and need more sensation to keep them interested. That's why you have to wear an whole armor to play rugby (american football) and thats why ground and pound seems like a sport to you. *on topic knowing that an MMA game could go both ways (UFC or other like K1) Which one would you prefere? Just gathering opinions here

EA Canada would probably do a good job with this game, especially because of their experience with Fight Night.

If it has to do with K1 than it would be a KICKBOXING game not a MMA game. In mixed martial arts you have striking, wrestling and submission fighting it's not "just beating each other senseless and hoping the other will fall faster" that's BOXING and KICKBOXING. This is the same ignorance that the SPORT of MMA has had to deal with from people who simply cannot except the fact that MMA has surpassed BOTH Boxing and Kickboxing. EA will most likely try to ink a deal with "Affliction" the only problem is that guys like Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski are already in the UFC game and I was under the impression after the whole Jon Fitch situation that if you were in the UFC game than your name/likeness could not appear in any other non-UFC game.

You know what i realy hope? That it has nothing to do with UFC but rather with K1 I viewed a couple UFC matches and think its stupid that you can hit someone when he's down and strangle someone till he passes out or gives up. How is that a sport? Its just beating eachother senseless and hoping the other will fall faster. I rather watch a K1 match where i can still see it as a sport. So,,, what is your opinion on this? Because i must admit that i do not know to much about UFC so im not saying its crap. But the thing is that seeing all you comments makes mee believe there allready is a realy good UFC game. Would you like to see a MMA game that includes K1 fighters?

Interesting. Would like to know which fighters will be in the game. Best bet would be from UFC fighters.

Idk about this. It is gonna be pretty hard to top undisputed. THQ did a good job on the game. Next years edition should be even better.

Greyfox_au Posted Jun 1, 2009 7:01 pm PT EA made Pride FC on PS2 and that was better than any UFC game for that console. - - - THQ made Pride FC genius.

So, they gave it a title. That's really something.

@ greyfox first of all, there are many different faces u can come up with in create a fighter, and u saying that there are only 4 is pretty insane. and as far as players styles go, every player is the same? so brock is the same as frank mir? after reading ur comment, someone who hasn't played the game would think exactly that. the fighters with the same exact same styles may fight similarly, but to say that they all are the same, u are just trying way too hard to bash the game. and whats the point of having fighter entrances in a game? how many times can u tolerate an entrance? after u have watched it once, u skip it anyway(personally, i never watch fighter entrances for any game). BTW, i never played Pride FC because I didn't have a PS2. i just looked at its rating, 8.1, which is really good. but still, i dont think ea can match undisputed . who is ea going to have in the game that will make fans pick up ea mma over undisputed? mma fans are going to go with undisputed because of all the ufc fighters. if ea does comeout with a mma game, it will put more pressure on the undisputed team to make a better one next year, so im all for it. i just don't think its going to do ea any good.

EA made Pride FC on PS2 and that was better than any UFC game for that console. Had fighters with their own unique combos and special moves. UFC Undisputed fighters have basically similar moves, punches and kicks and grappling moves - that's unrealistic. Eg - Cro-cop doing a triangle submission, everyone knows he's never done that or has ever tried in Pride or UFC. And in create a fighter you could chose from about 25+ faces (unlike UFC Undisputed with only 4 faces to chose from, WTF). I mean UFC is good in the presentation and graphics but if you really take a good look you'll relise that each player is basically the same only their appearance is not. If EA made a Pride game for PS3 or Xbox with todays graphics and similar to their PS2 game which had the fighter's entrance and Grand Prix modes. I think it would by far surpass UFC undisputed 2009.

Looking forward to see how this turns out would be good to see if they can make a game to rival UFC Undisputed, got a feeling in the near future EA will also pick up the right to make TNA wrestling games since it look like it will be up in the air soon.

I would only buy this, if they have the Kamehameha and the Hadouken fireball as an unlockable move. :P

Agreed with the online issues, they should have a spectator mode also so other people/friends can watch your matches.

The only way they can make this better than UFC 2009 is to make something similar that also solves the online issues. Too many people disconnect.
