EA has announced a new free-to-play Dragon Age title, Heroes of Dragon Age, reports Eurogamer.

The game is described as a combat-focused spin-off, with players building a party of both heroes and monsters from packs of fighters. The game will reportedly "span Dragon Age lore," suggesting cameo appearances from some of the series' main characters and villains.

Heroes of Dragon Age is being developed by EA Capital Games, formerly BioWare Sacramento and KlickNation. No launch date or platforms have been specified.

EA has dabbled in free-to-play before with the series, releasing Dragon Age Legends on Facebook in 2011. The game was retired in June 2012.

BioWare is also working on Dragon Age: Inquisition for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC. Inquisition will be released in 2014.

I think that explains it all quite nicely.

Having played the brilliantly tactical first game, I can't think of a series less suited to a mobile than this one.

If it were connected to YOUR story through save games that would be awesome. What they need to do is have your characters' information saved on the cloud so that if you play ANY game relating to a series (ME or DA for example) then your decisions and characters and development will reflect upon each other. I'm not sure why they haven't done it yet...but it would work beautifully. They could have easily started this process with DA2 and ME3...but obviously they didn't. It really isn't that hard, and you will make the stories in all of your games THAT much more personal.

"EA has dabbled in free-to-play before with the series, releasing Dragon Age Legends on Facebook in 2011. The game was retired in June 2012."

Dragon Age Legends is not their first dabble into the F2P, before that there is the Dragon Age Journeys, a web flash game based on Dragon Age Origins.

As far as I am concerned, I will try this one just like the previous two, these games usually are just a promotional platform for the actual main game, and offers promotional items for the main game itself. So I will try since it is free and offer goodies.

Bioware is not only dead, they have return as putrefied zombies. I wonder if Ray and Greg regret selling out to EA yet?

Combat focused..... Hmmm..... wasn't Dragon Age 2 combat focused??

That went well....

Wouldn't hurt to give it a try i guess, although looks like a "pay-to-win" more than a "free-to-play", meh still free :D

Ugh... I'm so sorry, Bioware. You used to be so shiny and clean! And then you got in bed with EA and now you're all diseased and bruised. Now I feel like I'm gonna get an std when I play DA:I. Story of my life... And then all you're left with is the weird, sticky-feeling memory. Way she goes i suppose.....

Eh, I'll give it a shot. I enjoy Dragon Age (or at least Origins), and I'm always down for free stuff.

People talk mad shit about EA but since they replaced some of the executives I have seen a change for the better there first step was dropping online passes then the news that DA;I's release would be pushed back a year to allow the team to improve on the game even reintroducing multiple races (human, dwarf, and elves) we shall see what changes EA will continue to make hopefully more for the better.

You guys hear that? I think its the sound of a series losing all its dignity.

And it'll suck ass like all their mobile and facebook game spinoffs.

Another wonderful experience brought to you by the Worst Company in America.

Looks like it will be worth giving a try.  It seems to be designed with mobile in mind instead of trying to shoehorn traditional controls into a mobile game.  If they go overboard with IAP, then they don't get any money.  I'll just play til it gets frustrating and then move on.

It's free to play and it's mobile. Depend on who you ask one is a lesser evil compared to the other... but damn this smells like shit.

Keep milking it, EA. And by "it" I mean the simple folk that still buy into your bs.

An F2P from EA, aye? Will it be as F2P as "Plants vs Zombies 2"?

Cool I guess, this seems like a way to bring in new people by introducing them into the Dragon Age world without having to bill the main game like that. I'm good with this, more people should play the Dragon Age games(yes even 2) anyway.

more like it's in a vegetable state, and EA is milking it dry.

@mypetmonkey While I think DA2 had it's shortcomings...I still don't understand all the hate. I felt WAY more invested in the characters because the development was done way better. I felt compelled to explore each person's story because it was genuinely interesting. I didn't always have that same urge in DA1. To be fair the overarching story in DA2 was quite a bit...dull...but the individual character stories more than made it up for me. Not to mention I really liked the idea of playing through different times of your life. That was neat. I'm not saying you have to agree with me...I just think that people are a bit too harsh on DA2 sometimes (still like DA1 more overall...but I certainly thoroughly enjoyed DA2).

Implying that it had any dignity left after DA2.

@Hurvl EA: "Let's stick a picture of Morrigan in there as a paper-thin playable character, and another pic of an ultra-rare dragon fight.  People will think the game is heavy like that!
