E3 Press Conferences, What Does Nintendo Need to Do

It's been a rough year for the Wii U, but Nintendo has rebounded from troubled console sales in the past. GameSpot's editors discuss what Nintendo needs to talk about at E3 to come out on top again.

Like last year, Nintendo is foregoing a traditional press conference at E3 in favor of a Nintendo Direct presentation, but that doesn't mean the company lacks for big announcements. E3 is going to be Nintendo's chance to show off how it plans to turn around the troubled Wii U and give gamers a glimpse at their upcoming NFC figurines and quality of life improvement ideas.

Microsoft and Sony may have more successful home consoles at the moment, but Nintendo has a history of bouncing back from adversity (especially looking back at the crazy, surprise success of the original Wii). We've already written about what games we want to see on Wii U and 3DS at E3, but here's what some GameSpot editors feel the company needs to discuss at the show to reassure fans Nintendo is on the right track.

Never Bet Against Nintendo - Edward Makuch

It's no secret that the Wii U is struggling, but as Nintendo says: a single game can alter the fate of a platform. By the time Nintendo's E3 briefing takes place on June 10, Mario Kart 8 will have already provided a nice sales jolt for the Wii U in the US (much like it did in the UK), and Nintendo needs to capitalize on this opportunity to advance the platform's momentum in a meaningful way. Nintendo can do this by giving us details on powerful exclusive franchises (New Legend of Zelda, 3D Mario, and Metroid perhaps), as well as games that leverage the Wii U's GamePad in unique ways. The GamePad can open up new and exciting ways to play, and Nintendo needs to show us why we should care about the tablet-like peripheral.

Nintendo also needs to not only give us more details about the NFC technology it's planning to introduce for Wii U, but more importantly, tell us why what Nintendo plans to offer is more meaningful than what Skylanders and Disney Infinity already let us do. There's also the matter of Nintendo's mysterious "quality of life" initiative, as well as Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's thoughts about the company wanting to be known as more than a games developer. Does Nintendo have an ace to play or are we in store for another "vitality sensor situation"? We'll find out soon.

Some Original Games Please - Mark Walton

It's safe to say Nintendo's Wii U isn't in the best place right now. Even the Gamecube--hardly regarded as a success--had sold nearly 10 million units compared the Wii U's six million by this point in its lifecycle. Alas, it's hard to see what Nintendo can do to pick up the pace. Third parties aren't exactly rushing to develop for the console, so it's all up to a strong first-party lineup to entice people towards a purchase.

But Nintendo's focus on established franchises like Zelda and Mario--which take a long time to develop--can only take it so far. A change in direction is sorely needed. There are some immensely talented people working for the company, and I'd love to see Nintendo announce some original games, and more regular releases, to make the Wii U a worthy alternative to the PS4 and Xbox One. A price drop would certainly help things along too. Maybe that could rekindle some of the magic that the much cheaper Wii had.

No Time Like the Present - Tom Mc Shea

How long does Nintendo plan on treading water? The Wii U is in a bad situation, and even though the 3DS houses countless great games, its time is also running short. We've seen just about every major franchise make its way to Nintendo's handheld already, so there just aren't many more blockbusters-in-waiting, unless we see sequels to the games that we just finished playing. Clearly, Nintendo needs to make a move, and there's no time like the present.

We already know that Nintendo is working on a quality of life platform, but considering that mystery device probably isn't related to video games, I don't think we'll see it at E3. Instead, we need to see the first glimpse of Nintendo's next console. Ideally, it would be a console that you could take with you--replacing both the Wii U and 3DS in one swoop--so no longer would Nintendo's internal teams have to fight among themselves. Rather, the best developer in the world would be able to combine its efforts in one place. Just imagine how many great games would appear on a console in which the entirety of Nintendo is focused just on it. Sounds pretty good, no?

I Want Nintendo To Get Healthy - Dan Hindes

What I want to see from Nintendo is also what I have no interest in actually engaging with: its mass market experiences like Wii Fit and Brain Training. All Nintendo needs is just one of these on the Wii U to take off and become a system seller to get the console out of the red. Now, I have no personal interest in anything like Wii Fit or Brain Training, but the Wii U needs to be healthy so I can get more of the games I actually want to play - the Marios, Zeldas, and hey, maybe a full-featured Pokemon game on a home console, for once.

I doubt we're actually going to be seeing any of that this year, however. Nintendo has been hinting at its new quality of life platform--some combination of hardware and software that they seem completely unwilling to describe in further detail--signifying the company's new direction. That new direction is what we'll be seeing this year. Because if Nintendo is happy to fall back on Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. as system sellers for the core gamer, then E3 for Nintendo is going to be all about how they recapture that mass audience that it had in its grasp with the Wii.

You've read our thoughts, but what games do you think Nintendo needs to talk about to reassure its fan base? Let us know in the comments below!

I don't have a Wii U but a proper Metroid game reveal or a Zelda title could sway me to look into one. Looking forward to seeing if both get unveiled.

I'd love to see Nintendo go to a hard hitting downloadable model. Make downloadeable games $29 or even $24. They would be able to appeal to the more budget conscious parents. Pass the savings of production (or lack there of) to the customer. I still buy games at retail because, honestly I want to hold a product for $50-60. But if there was a more budget friendly model that would really help their image. Price cut the Wii U. Give us an even cheaper option with a Wii U Pro Controller instead of the GamePad. While I love the GamePad I don't think it should be a requirement. They don't really do anything unique with it after all. And the Wii U Pro controller is less gimmicky looking to the uninformed shopper. IDK. Nintendo has a long road, but they'll make it. They, after all, have first party titles Sony and Microsoft would sell their souls to have.

Apple is the reason all these systems are failing. If Apple finds away to bring all these 3rd party games to an ipad it's will crush all systems. If i can Mirror my ipad games to my apple T.V and play on my T.v why to i need 3 big ass systems sitting their. I play more games on my phone and ipad then i do on XBOX1/PS4 AND WIIU

What does Nintendo need to do? Easy! Release a console that is on par with PS4/XONE and they will be back in the race. I really don't understand why they don't get this. Someone please explain to me why Nintendo makes stupid gimmicky consoles that are underpowered.

Give me 2 reasons why anyone should buy XboxOne? and if you say any 3rd party game please shoot your self

LOL I find it so funny how the people on here who claim to "hate" Nintendo constantly say they're sick of seeing Mario games every year and can't stand Mario(Which is strange because these are the same people who usually don't mind playing a new god of war, or halo, or battlefield, or call of duty every year).  Yet those same people then go on and  say Nintendo needs to die and make games(like MARIO!) for other systems!  So when it comes down to it, they don't hate Mario because he's always coming out with games, they hate Mario because he's not on their system.

Just sink Nintendo...because it's the same thing as always...its like capcoms super-ultra-mega-extreme-turbo-nitro--championship-ultimate mario then add - galaxy , party , battle royal , kart , sports what ever you like. Sick of milking this every year and generation. the point is .... NINTENDO HAS NOT OVERHYPED THEIR WII - U . The market is allrerady full of mario crap and can not take it anymore. They need something NEW !!!!!!!

tommynj

How have they rebounded ? Please explain that too me... I had a Wii U. They had literally no 3rd party support and an under powered console. No one is buying a Wii U, even the diehard fans abandoned the Wii U. Sales are so bad.  Now if the rumors of the Nintendo Fusion console are true then I might be on board but that is a wait and see. They need good 3rd party games and I don't mean more platform games either.

Nintendo fails

1. Dropping a bunch of Wii games for the Wiiu

2. Needs better Online Multiplayer games

3. Stop release a Disney game everytime they have a new movie

4.Not releasing a Pokemon that connects the WIIU to the 3DS

5. Reggie..it's time for a new Face

5. Wii fit needs  to come with a diet pepsi cause it's for fat lazy people

6. STOP WITH ALL THE MARIO GAMES

The Truth is XBOXone only sold cause of die hard Xbox fans cause most game on it i rather play on the P.C. playstation for sold cause people hate Xbox one and now the people who brought PS4 have to wait till 2015 to get anything good. Nintendo sales sucked because the games were a bunch of WII games and now with MK8 and smash bro's nintendo will rise. One game boosted the wiiu sales 3 times the amount of Xbox1. So die hard fan or not the numbers don't lie.

@bunchanumbers  this is obvious look at how many games Nintendo has  in the top 30 selling games of all time .

@emmafrost3288 Well looks you can't tell the difference from a triple AAA game like Skyrim from a Flappy bird, because you are a girl and a casual, have heard that thing before, so you can't be more happy with your mobile candy crush. But gamers like me can't stand the simplicity of that games.

I can't remember I play more than 2 min on a mobile, simply can't stand that type of garbage. Your kind must be here but in apple store giving more stars to all flappy birds clones games. But have to agreed you have a point that Nintendo have nothing to sell to the public beside children who identify with Mario. It's hard to tell the difference with Mario games with their cartoony style and simplicity with the apple store general content. They are simply lost. But on the other side, meanwhile there's a  Farcry, Batman,Mortal Kombat, etc ,and the master race, then this type of market will never end.

@supersonicp9 They just need to appeal to developers. Microsoft approached 3rd party devs after the Regular Ass Xbox (my roommate and I call it that since we can't say XB One anymore when talking about the original) had a slow start. The 360 was a HUGE success for this reason. Nintendo needs to say look, what do you guy want to develop for? We'll make it YOUR system. Nintendo needs to adapt. That's all.

emmafrost3288

@supersonicp9 What does PS4/XBOX1 have? Please don't say better graphic's?

@Qmajinbuu I just find it weird when people say that Nintendo releases too many Zelda games but still buy CoD every year when CoD has 11 games in 10 years, and Zelda has 8 games in 28 years.

emmafrost3288
emmafrost3288

@Qmajinbuu Nintendo does need to relax with everything Mario and just put out a Great Mario game every 2 years.

QingJao86
QingJao86

@tommynj Sales of the Wii U seem to be better than sales of the XB1 right now.  They aren't going to be anyones first console this year, but if you have a PC there is absolutely no reason to get a PS4 or XB1 right now for the 1 or 2 decent exclusive games that come out every year for that system.  Meanwhile the Nintendo consoles get on average around 8 good exclusive titles every year.  So yea... the Wii U might not be most people's first choice for a console, but I am betting it will be a lot of people's second choice (and that was what made the Wii successful).

QingJao86
QingJao86

@Triton Funny every time I play Mario Kart online most of the people seem to be pretty mature, every time I play CoD online I end up playing against 10 year olds.  Which of those is the mature game again?

tommynj
tommynj

@Triton Nothing wrong with putting out a Zelda or Mario games for the kids but they need to definitely start catering to the more mature players out there if they want a resurgence into the console market.

ACMC85

@Triton I don't see any kiddie games. IF you believe being adult, is all about FPSes then you need to re-evaluate your life.

@emmafrost3288 Multimedia support and better online which btw is a must for a lot of gamers that are part of the online community.

@emmafrost3288 The difference is PS4/XONE has 3rd and 1st party titles in the works that we already know about (MGS5, FF15, etc etc.). Wii U has none. 1st party games are good and all, but why pay money for a console that gets 1 or 2 good games every 2-3ish years?

Qmajinbuu
Qmajinbuu

@emmafrost3288 @Qmajinbuu To a point I do agree, but as long as the games are different there shouldn't be anything wrong with it.  Having 2 or 3 mario platformers or sequels out in a small time frame can be a little much, but most of the time the games Mario are in are completely different from each other such as Mario 3d world, Mario kart, SSB, Mario golf, etc. and those games usually expand over several years.

klakier82
klakier82

@Qmajinbuu @klakier82 yep thats the point...I HAVE A CHOICE ... to play BF or COD or HALO ... nintendo gives you choice to play MARIO SPORTS , MARIO KART , MARIO GALAXY ... Nuff said BTW.... WAITING FOR MARIO MMA ....that would be awesome ..... LOLZ

klakier82
klakier82

@emmafrost3288 @klakier82 im not a fan of Microsoft and Sony if thats what you're thinking...but :

1) You are obviously blind .. to see the fact that they actually have GAMES , all sort of Games.

2) How can You await someting to sell milions when You have nothing but ZELDA , MARIO , Disney and Pokemon Games ? ..."deal with it"

emmafrost3288
emmafrost3288

@supersonicp9 @emmafrost3288 XbOXONE has Halo WOW and all the 3rd party games are better on my P.C.  PS4 won't have anything till 2015 and even the free games they give away every month SUCK...

QingJao86
QingJao86

@corrus @klakier82 @emmafrost3288 13 exclusives with over a 75 on Metacritic, compared to PS4s and XB1s 2 exclusives.  13 might not be a ton, but I think I only ever bought around 13 360 games, and I had that system since 2006.

QingJao86
QingJao86

@klakier82 @emmafrost3288 Name me a good platformer on a Microsoft system (any Microsoft system).

Beyond that right now the Wii U has 13 exclusives that have gotten a 75 or better on Metacritic, last I checked the XB1 and PS4 both had 2.  4 of said games had anything to do with Zelda and Mario (and I really don't consider Mario Kart a Mario game).

griefseeker

@emmafrost3288 @supersonicp9 I keep hearing people bring up the PC.  Truth is, you get more for a console than you do for a PC.  You have to upgrade your PC every now and then which costs extra not to mention have the right drivers for games.  It's more cumbersome to use a PC and most of the PS4/XBOX fanbase knows this.

supersonicp9
supersonicp9

@emmafrost3288 @supersonicp9 Jesus you don't get it... You just supported my argument. XONE and PS4 HAVE all these extra things. The fact that they have halo, cod, bf, etc. tells me that they are supported. Yes they play better on PC (I personally am a PC gamer), but the point stands that many games are already available on PS4/Xboxone. None of them though are on Wii U. WHy? Because the console is underpowered and terribly marketed.

emmafrost3288
emmafrost3288

@supersonicp9 @emmafrost3288 I wouldn't buy a big ass system for 3rd party games and i can play them all on my P.C thats just dumb. every game coming out for PS4/XBOX ONE is on P.C. Real gamers play P.C. I got the Wiiu to play Mario Kart and Smash Brothers which i can't play any where else.

byzantine_chant
byzantine_chant

@emmafrost3288 "Real gamers play PC." Then you continued with "I got the Wii-U to play Mario Kart and Smash Brothers..."

So which one is it? Are you a "real" gamer or not? LOL
