E3 2014: Uncharted 4 Story Details Emerge, "Still Going to Be a Roller-Coaster Ride"

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley discuss their plans for the new Uncharted.

Since Sony capped off its E3 press conference Monday night with a trailer for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, additional details on Nathan Drake's next outing have been released, including the first tidbits about its story.

An official synopsis for Uncharted 4 has been released, revealing what Drake will be dealing with (but not why): "The next generation of Nathan Drake will explore what it means when Drake is forced back into the world of thieves. He will embark on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. It's his greatest adventure yet and will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves."

We learned recently that The Last of Us leads Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley were stepping in to head up Uncharted 4's development. A new video (watch it above) released by Sony features the duo talking about their approach to Uncharted, which they both have experience with after working in prominent roles on the series' first two games.

"Gameplay-wise, we're just going deeper and richer with all the mechanics. It's still going to be a roller-coaster ride." -- Naughty Dog's Bruce Straley

"[With] The Last of Us, we went to great lengths to try to create this reality, but we were still limited by the amount of overdraw the PS3 could handle, etc.," Straley says. "Now, the PS4 is allowing us to push so much more density, so it's fun to go back and go like, 'Oh, look at the things we wish we could have done in Uncharted 1, it's just like, this is easy, let's just make this.' It's nice to be able to explore something and look back and go, 'Wow, remember when we couldn't do any of this?' It's kind of neat."

While Druckmann and Straley are bringing with them some of the lessons learned from The Last of Us, that doesn't mean they're throwing away what has worked for Uncharted in the past. "Gameplay-wise, we're just going deeper and richer with all the mechanics," Straley says. "It's still going to be a roller-coaster ride; it's still going to have that pacing. We still want you on the edge of your seat, but at the same time, we want to make sure that you as players--I, as a player--want to play this thing and feel invested. And we want to make sure we have that with the epic, with the pacing, with the characters that we're known for."

Druckmann also spoke about "expanding Nate's core move set" and giving players "more options, more ways to approach; whether it's exploration, traversal, or combat, we're going to have more ways to attack those things."

As Monday's trailer revealed, Uncharted 4 will see the return of both Drake and frequent companion Sully. The game is scheduled to be released on the PlayStation 4 at some point in 2015.

Naughty dog should make GTA 5 type open world games with UC4 type graphics engine.it will be a great fun & realism.

He still has that thing on his ring finger, which implies ND will put Elena in great danger for Drake to sacrifice something (or someone) to save her.

Ok, roller coasters go all over the place not just up and down, Uncharted 3 was all over the top cinematic jumping from high heights with explosions going off behind you, If I wanted that I'd watch a s*^tty michael bay film.

I'm really looking forward to this game but I don't want it to turn out like the 3rd, it was so average and forgettable.

So the minds behind TLoU are now in charge of Uncharted, jeez Im worried, I hope they respect the franchise and not begin to introduce mechanics like in TLoU, I almost sleep playing that garbage

UNCHARTED is the best series I have ever played.  Even it's weakest link is extremely good.  I don't want to play gushing fan, but...  the idea of UNCHARTED 4 is exciting...  and even with Hennig leaving, I think the series is in great hands.

Is there any other gamedev as important and significant as naughty dog nowadays? Think not.

My most anticipated game!  I loved peoples reaction to the e3 teaser when Nate's face was shown.

Hopefully all our favorite characters will be back, even if it's for a smaller amount like Chloe's involvement in Uncharted 3.

I'm going to guess that Elena's been captured by one of Drake's old nemesis' and he's blackmailing Nate to help him find this "fabled pirate treasure".

While I'm happy for another Uncharted game. (Played the games to death) I kinda felt like the 3rd game was a good ending point for the series with how the story ended. Oh well, guess I'll wait and see what happens in the story for this one. Just need figure out how to get the money for a PS4 now. :)

@Johny_47 I seriously wouldn't worry about UC4. Everyone was so worried after Amy Hennig left but very few bothered to check the staff roster for the UC, UC2 and UC3. Hennig was there for all three but for UC3 (the one that most think of as lacking) Druckmann and Staley were missing. Given Druckmann's and Straley's work on TLOU they were probably very major components in the first two UC's. I only have high hopes now that they're back working on the franchise again.

@Johny_47 Not average....far above average compared to other games. Just didn't live up to expectations after UC2.

@KiriharaZro Go and report your worries to Sony, that the Creators of one of the biggest games last year, and best games ever, are heading one of their projects

yes_um_no_yeah

@KiriharaZro Man, you have some excellent reading comprehension. Both Druckmann and Straley both had large roles in the development of the first 2 games. How about reading the article instead of the title before making a crybaby opinion.

@chris120379 I agree. I've gotten to the point where I don't even buy a game unless it's Naughty Dog anymore. Nobody else has the tools to develop a great game, I will be trying 1886 when it comes out though. Hope it doesn't disappoint. .

@chris120379 I enjoy Uncharted but to call them the most significant dev team?  That's a bit of a stretch for me, at least I much preferred the Bioshock series this past gen.  As for the other guy saying how ND makes crap games, well that's taking way too far the other way, though I do think they can work on improving the gameplay by at least making platforming somewhat interesting.

@jedicommand7 I prefer Chloe to Elena so it would be nice to get some of both coming back to please all the fans.

@Jarten I was hoping for more like a pre-quel type of game with younger Sully, hate to see hime age

horizonwriter

@Jarten I don't know. Given how rock things had been between Nate and Elena throughout the timeline of the three games the only rock solid relationship was between Nate and Sully. Seeing Drake with some extra years added on will show us if he really did learn something valuable by the end of UC3, and better yet if he actually stuck with it for a change. Who knows, maybe the couple has a kid or two by now, giving Drake even more to fight and survive for.

@vladric why do you post this cr@p? It doesn't even make any sense on an article showing something GOOD about the playstation? While never pleasant, at least it kindofsortofmaybe makes some semblance of sense on articles about financial trouble or something. But on articles like this? It's basically a non sequitur.

I also like how you go out of your way claiming "to be a PC guy, not an xbox fanboy" and yet you are a simpering fool for anything pro-Xbox, just as your anti-sony comments are never absent from a PS article.

Just give it a rest - we get it, you don't like Sony. You are not going to convince people that like playstation to stop doing so with random comments like this

Jdzspace
Jdzspace

@vladric don't troll. just because Playstation has dominated since release of the ps4 and now dominated E3.

hate to be "that guy"....but we pretty much told you that from the beginning. you had plenty of time to accept it.

it's really on you at this point

mr_nee

@TheGuardian03 they listen to you, and then 1 year from now, I can see you commenting on the review -- "this is not the Uncharted game anymore". No thank you - new Sonic Boom is not sonic game at all.

blueboxdoctor

@Gazz_mann A death could be good if done properly, it could make their character's legacy more prominent.  But I don't see them doing it, at least not to Nate, they have to keep the chance of a future sequel alive, even though I think they should have this be the last one or at least the last one for a long while.

KiriharaZro
KiriharaZro

@pozium @yes_um_no_yeah

I´ll do and I´ll add that they stop making only remastered games from PS3, and had major roles in the develompment of previous games isn´t guarantee that they´ll direct successfuly U4, just remind you Todd Papy make a mess directing GOW Ascension while he was the designer on GOW1 and GOW2 and Design Director on GOW3, so no, isnt guarantee that "major roles" mean "they´ll do great things when direct"

@xantufrog @vladric because he's an immature kiddie taking his first baby steps in the world of tr011ing. This attempt failed, but all birds eventually leran to fly... unless they're chicken

@KiriharaZro @pozium Considering UC2 and TLoU are the best ND games out there and these two guys were responsible.....I think we're okay with UC4. Get over it.

@darkteddi @Jdzspace @vladric - I just meant in the sense that they announced the biggest, most varied games. and a lot of exclusive content, plus being able to stream vita games on a large TV and PS4 games to another TV.......just a lot of really great stuff.

wasn't all perfect, but they came with the content a lot more than anyone else, except maybe Nintendo
